    Great hall

We were in the area after a Sunday xc ski day. It was mid afternoon and had seen this placed advertised so we stopped in to preview it. There are many signs to help you find this entrance which are necessary and I could see why people who come at night might struggle. There is something Magical when you enter the Great Hall. There is much attention to detail and amazing armor artwork complete with a history notecard. We were greeted by a gentleman at reception who invited us to look around and actually showed us a large suit which was being cleaned. He also encouraged us to go upstairs to see The Kennedy room- which has amazing antiques including a Steinway upright which was in excellent tune. We were told in the off season dinner Thurs- Saturday. I would definitely love to come back for at least a dining experience. I saw the menu and it was a bit pricey for the area but the atmosphere is enchanting. I hope you all don't mind me putting up a review without staying or dinning here....but our experience touring it gave us a great 1st impression!

The place is very pricey for what you get. The restaurant is seldom open if ever. This is actually an armory not a castle the only thing that resembles an armory is the actual structure itself the inside has been built to look like the inside of a castle so this is not an authentic castle. the inside has been built up. Your room resembles nothing other than a typical hotel room.

Very cool place but a disappointing dinner experience. Very limited menu, prices reasonable but food nothing special.

This review if for a one night stay for two rooms, a king suite and a standard suite. Overall this is an amazing place, with MUCH to commend. But, there are one or two quibbles, and hence the one star drop. The old Armory is a commanding structure. If you're coming over the bridge from Amsterdam and take that first right you will see the armory on the hill, lit up. This was particularly more spectacular during our trip this past weekend as the flagpole was outlined in lights like a giant tree. The building is impressive and awe inspiring. Getting into the castle was a bit of a wreck. They had closed the main ramp due to possible bad weather, and a sign gave unclear directions to an alternate entrance. We tried to suss them out in the dark, and ended up going in via an "Emergency exit" at the back of the building. (That was also rather poorly marked, and I was not aware of it until I was halfway down it.) Which garnered me a 5 minute talking to during the check in. (They have cameras all over the property.) The check in was also marred a bit with an odd shifting of rooms, where I was told that they didn't want my children to use both of the beds in the standard suite, as that was too much to expect the maids to have to take care of in the morning. I am still unclear as to this, but we ended up following the letter of their edict, and the queen bed in the standard suite was left as we found it. And the last little bit of criticism is the sound proofing, or lack thereof. I could hear peoples voices in adjacent rooms and in the hallway. Clearly enough that a couple in a room near mine had a conversation from 4 am to 5:30 am and I was unable to sleep. (Words were not distinguishable, but the sound of voices were.) The spaces are lovely. They have clearly put a lot of money and effort into this Hotel. The bathrooms are luxurious. The beds are comfortable. Everything is clean. The staff is largely very nice. There is a good amount of amenities. Large modern TV's. A desk and sitting area in the suites. Closets. Fridge and coffee makers in the rooms. Each room has a digital keypad for entry. No physical keys. I am not certain how often these codes are rotated. (These are standard consumer grade locks, with usually 5-6 stored codes per unit.) Breakfast is limited. Cereal, muffins and other baked goods, yogurt, and some fruit. Coffee, tea, and juices available as well. Check out was simple. We were out and on our way in minutes. Via the back door.

The location of the hotel can't be helped, as it looks like Amsterdam, NY has seen better days. However, the hotel is a relic from history and incredibly unique. It used to be the state armory, but is the only armory that has transferred to private hands. The building looks like a legitimate castle, and the Great Hall is absolutely fascinating - as if you've been transported back to medieval times. There's beautiful artwork and a line of knight statues standing in their suit of armor. The rooms are updated with modern bathrooms, comfortable beds, free bottled water, and a gigantic TV. The breakfast is a little limited, but I was just happy to have any breakfast! The staff are very courteous and are very inclined to discuss the history of the hotel - it used to be used as a gymnasium as well as a shooting range downstairs, and one of the "garages" could fit a legitimate tank - and they invite the guests to wander about the rooms. An overall unique experience!

A girlfriend and I left the menfolk behind and took a little road trip and stayed at the Amsterdam Castle Hotel. This could turn out to be a long review so if you're short on time, here it is in a nutshell: Hotel, wonderful, dining room, awful. The rooms are absolutely splended. Clean, crisp bed linens and plush, plentiful towels. The bathroom has two beautiful pedestal sinks and a spacious shower. It would help to be a contortionist to reach the toilet paper, but, other than that, no complaint about the room. I'll admit the common area decor is a little kitchy, but the architecture of this 1895 building is fascinating. And now to the subject of dinner. We were seated at 6:30. It's important to remember that it was 6:30, not 9:30 or something. There were nine entrées from which to choose. I started with the Lobster Bisque, which was quite good, but a small portion. Things started to go downhill from there. My friend ordered Filet Mignon and I ordered the duck. The waitress came back to announce they were out of both. It's 6:30 on a Friday night and they're out of two menu items! So, my friend asks for the scallops and I order the New York strip. My steak arrives and I kid you not, it was a half inch thick. I could not chew the first bite and then I couldn't chew the second one either, so back to the kitchen it went and I switched to the scallops. Apparently they were out of salt too because everything was bland and once again, a rather small portion for the price. Our server was embarrassed and apologetic but we assured her it was not her fault and her service was much appreciated. I believe the dining room is a recent addition so there are bound to be some growing pains. The soup was $12.50 and the entrees ranged from $19.00 for Chicken Marsala to $39.00 for the missing Filet. They need to come up with a better plan to deserve those prices.

Amazing Mike is about the nicest gentlemen you can meet. He makes you feel like you're at home. The rooms are very big.. the restaurant was amazing. I'm definitely coming back.

So that happened…read more About to sit down for our second meal in two nights at The Nest/Schenectady (not the subject of this review). Why? Why would we drive 20 minutes in the rain and fog on St Patrick's and not eat at the lobby restaurant (this restaurant) where we were guests for two nights? Why walk out on our reservation? The reservation made with the front desk? Incompetence. Disrespect. Complete inability to remedy multiple screw ups. We were taken to our table with a cute little reserved placard on it. Unnecessary, but ok. There were three tables dining. Of dozens. As in the place was completely empty. Tables everywhere. Ours? Right next to the point-of-sale system against the bar. We asked to move. A dozen tables were available away from the bar. As it turns out, the significantly warmer side of the venue. Nope. The gentleman states that we can only sit on the kitchen entrance side close to the main door. In an empty restaurant. We sat there for about two minutes before it was clear we'd be cold from the main door draft and even more frustrated by the loud yelling in the kitchen. The ice crunching from the bartender was the only thing that made it comical. Seriously, within two minutes my neck was stiff from the cold at the second table. My wife's feet, in boots, we're getting chilled. I'd be furious if this wasn't a first world thing. It is a first world thing. But if you're looking for a nice dining experience in an empty restaurant and the staff wants to sit your reservation made, suite (just a bigger room) staying butt in front of the kitchen or POS system rather than accept that the guest isn't satisfied with the hospitality... As I said, we left. We won't be back. At least I got a nice text letting me know they canceled our reservation.

First she asked us if we had reservations and we said no, she then asked us how many in our party and I told her five and she sarcastically said, "and you don't have reservations". She acted bothered and then said well we can sit you in the back. She proceeded to walk us to the back and she begrudgingly said well I have to set up a table for you. Thank goodness our server, Angie, quickly came to offer assistance. She had a smile on her face and was very friendly. When you first walk in, you are in the tavern. They had live music at 6:00 and most of the tables were reserved. And now the good part!! The food was very good. Angie advised us of the specials of the day. We ordered one of the specials which was a generous portion of Haddock stuffed with shrimp and crab. It was cooked to perfection and had just the right amount of flavor. It was served atop a bed of rice with a cream sauce and cooked spinach on the side. It came with a salad and a role. We also ordered the salmon and that was also cooked perfectly and was delicious. We were provided excellent service by Angie.

I walked around to check out some of the other spaces outside of the restaurant area and I love that they have kept so many of the historical facets and spaces alive. In the meantime, I really had no idea that a "taco Tuesday" in Broadalbin would actually be something to talk about! First thing to note is portion size. Gigantic. We all had leftovers. A LOT of leftovers. And while it might not be real "traditional" Mexican food, the quality was excellent. Food was nice and hot; our server was very friendly. The only glitch we hit: the iced tea tasted terrible. Not sure what happened there, but the rest of the meal made up for that. I have no idea what the rooms are like or how it is as a hotel, but if you live nearby, you might want to stop by for a nice meal. We could tell that lots of regulars go there. Hopefully whoever the new owners are will keep up the quality of food.
