I am happy to say he offered me a tour of their facility on E North Ave and answered my questions, and most importantly, assured me they do visit areas and people we call into the mission about whom we feel need a visit and helping hand. He gave me business cards to hand out to homeless I see in the downtown area while at or on the way to work. He showed me the kitchen and dining areas, the dorm like setting with bunkbeds in the basement and the chapel area. He told me breakfast and dinner is offered to anyone and they work closely with other organizations to provide the homeless with services they might need. Also, some of what this organization offers include a women's and children's program that is pretty comprehensive with help with housing, transportation, child care, meals, addiction recovery, training needs. They also have a men's residential program for those needing help with mental issues, poverty, addiction, homelessness. They have an emergency shelter program for men. What's more is that Doug's interaction with others at the facility was genuine and warm. So many came up to him or he came up to them and he always introduced me to everyone. Another gentleman, Dean Robinson, their Street Outreach Specialist, was so warm and personable, and was especially helpful in allaying my concerns that the homeless had a face, a name, a personal story and that outreach visits were to people and not just sweeps of homeless tent communities. I came away with an appreciation of their services and will be supporting them financially, donating items where I can, and handing out their cards to those who could use a helping handful in life.

I was told a minimum of eight times (I quit counting at eight) that they had Penguins T-Shirts in the store, "in the back", but with each declaration that they had the Penguins T-Shirts I was told versions of, "You cannot buy one", "We will not sell you one". This was in addition to being told to just order one over the internet. When I told them I was visiting the city and buying it as a gift I was told to go to the mall or the Penguin stadium store. The service at the Federal St Store was excellent. I was dressed conservatively, not at all appearing to be the type customer..."rabid fan?", the store wanted. I had gone on the internet to find where to in person, physically buy a Penguins t-shirt near the downtown Pittsburgh Wyndom hotel. The internet clearly indicated inventory of Penquins t-shirts at the RallyHouse stores. It was a 0.6 mile walk to the 206 Federal St RallyHouse store. Upon arrival at the store I asked for the item, stating it was a gift/souvenir to take home with me. I was advised because of the small footprint of the store, they did not carry Penquin inventory out of season. I was directed to another RallyHouse store a few blocks away. The person helping stepped outside the store with me to make sure I was heading in the right direction for the store. Upon arriving at the 684 W General Robinson St. store, I searched the entire, very large, store but only found children's and adult long sleeve Penguins clothing. I approached a young woman who assisted me in looking. She commented that they had many Penguins T-Shirts, stacks of them. They had been there the previous day. She eventually went to a manager, Abbey. The manager stated that they had been put in the back. The Penguins items had been moved to make room for temporary inventory for two different upcoming games. Despite informing Abbey that I had been directed to the store specifically for Penguin T-shirts, she repeatedly advised me that they had them, but I could not buy one. She advised me that they were in the back but would not sell me one. She did not want me as a customer and actually told me to go to stores other than RallyHouse. I had the lengthy "negotiation' to have her go in the back and sell me a T-Shirt. I stopped counting after the eight declarations that they had Penquin T-Shirts in the back and the accompanying refusal to sell me one. After abut ten minutes of that, I left. Since it was on they way to my hotel, I stopped in at the 206 Federal location. Within minutes of hearing the story, a staff went into their basement (they apparently do not have a backroom) and brought up a Penguins T-Shirt.

Love this place! They have all the high quality Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates stuff!read more

It's a cash only business. However, I was told they had 5-6 available, so we rushed straight there. When we got there we were told there was only 1 paddle board. We reluctantly rented a hydrobike, a paddleboard and 2 kayaks. I didn't want to waste my money to pay for something we didn't want, and my kids were disappointed, but if they only had 1, what else could we do after driving the whole way there and only having a couple hour window to spend together before my oldest had to work? I asked to be put on a waitlist for one and the lady literally said, "Well, I guess I could start one, but you would have to be up here to get it." So I asked if one came in, could we be first in line and she said yes. I then watched one come in, so I gave her the kayak chip and asked to exchange it for a paddle board chip, but she said that the paddle boarder had to pay first. With time ticking on our rentals we waited for her to come up and pay and then watched her leave. Afterward, I was told that there was still no paddle board available. So we gave up and walked down to the dock and I explained that we had a chip for a hydrobike, a paddleboard, and 2 kayaks but that we wanted another paddleboard or 2, and pointed to the pile of them laying there. The dock worker assured me that they had 4 available and as we were talking another came in. He walked up with me to the table where you get the chips and they told him that the paperwork showed that there were none available, and so we couldn't get one. Seriously? We went back down to the dock and one of the guys got 2 paddle boards out for us, but then saw the chips we had and put one back. I asked if we could keep it since there were plenty available and one of the employees yelled at me and said that there must be people waiting for them or they would've given us a chip for one. There were 5 paddleboards, no one waiting but us since she had no wait list and didn't start one but told us we could have one if one came in. We never did get another paddle board and our hour was cut short as we waited for them. This place is incompetently and poorly run, and they didn't even try to remedy our situation by physically looking to see that there were boards available. How hard is that? Common sense is not strong with these folks! We received no apology and no extra time on our rental. On a rare occasion when I had my kids available together on a beautiful day and we all wanted to have fun paddle boarding together, we couldn't because the paperwork said that none were available, even though there were 5! You can't make this stuff up!!!

Both the PFDs and the shuttle vans could use some updating, however. The canoe itself was fine, as were the oars. The river route was very peaceful, with the exception of some choppy water occasionally, with some rocks we had to maneuver around. We did get stuck in a shallow section, but that was on us for not realizing how shallow it was. The take-out was fine, if a little muddy. Overall a good experience.

What if one in your group dips out of the plans. Then you have either paid for person and you're out that money or you have an extra ticket that you may or may not use. Accept a deposit at the time of reservation but the whole thing is a little ridiculous. Pre-covid, they passed out flyers on the shuttle out to the river. If you returned the flyer when you returned, you'd get a free scoop of ice cream. Our family used to love that. We'd still buy more ice cream but after paddling all afternoon, we'd love to sit and relax with our ice cream before loading everything back up and talk about the neat stuff that we seen. This by no means is their fault. I just hope they keep it in mind and bring it back in some way. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons. The shuttle that we rode in sounded and felt like it could use some maintenance and because the 2 rental kayaks we rented for our kids-both had tons of pieces of styrofoam, pieces of tree, and spiders in them. You don't have to spray them out after every use but least spray out the kayaks before using them each season.
