A very beautiful, clean, modern cafe on a street opposite Igreja das Carmelitas…read more When I entered and shared that I had a reservation, which I booked through The Fork, the server who greeted me seemed confused and unsure, and told me that it probably wasn't confirmed by the manager. Fortunately after checking in it further, she was able to give me a table in the back. It took awhile for someone to take my order, and when I ordered a flat white, they informed me the machine was broken, and they only had filtered coffee. Certainly a disappointed but, hey, stuff happens. I figured I'd just get a coffee elsewhere afterwards. I ordered the Wild Eggs, and the dish came out at a reasonable pace. It was tasty, but not the best I've had in Porto so far -- the bread was stale, so the crust was so crunchy and tough that it was hard to chew. It was a good sized portion, though, so I had leftovers to take away. However, no one came back to check on me or to see if I needed the check. The servers seemed busy with other tables, and I can understand, it's a busy, popular restaurant. But I got the sense I was an annoyance, and they couldn't be bothered with me. Which I also get, because tourists aren't super welcomed by locals in Portugal. Though I've felt much more welcomed in other establishments during my stay, so it wasn't very comfortable for me here. The location, atmosphere and food is what kept this from being 2 stars, but given that the prices are on the higher end, it wouldn't be my first choice of places to revisit.

Sadly the sweet potato were cut like french fries, but were soggy. If presented as a hash or home fries, I'd probably would have been ok with it. Glad we tried the francesinha though!

Good gelato break while wandering Porto…read more Boutique do Gelado is a small gelato shop just south of the popular pedestrian street Rua das Flores in Porto's historic district. We stumbled in on a hot day to find a wide array of fresh gelato flavors, including classic mango, strawberry, mint & chocolate plus more unique blends. Texture was smooth & rich as you'd expect for gelato. For €3.90, we received one gelato scoop in a cone. Their signature vanilla, pistachio & forest fruit flavor had an interesting mix of fresh vanilla gelato along with a slightly crunchy nutty feel plus notes of sweet sour berries. The scoop was topped generously and on the sweet side. The gelato shop was relatively packed with locals. Skip it or hit it? It's a good detour for a pleasant treat between strolling through Rua das Flores.

I liked that they let you try many of the interesting flavors..and once you decided...you can get more than one flavors in just a cup (or a cone!). While I wasn't able to get to try the kinder bueno ice cream that everyone seemed to rave about on Yelp (it just wasn't an option that day!), I was able to sample a few and select two flavors to indulge in! I'd say..you can never go wrong with what you selected! Try it out...especially on a hot day or after your long, exhausting walk wandering around hilly Porto!

The coffee was okay, I found the bean they used to be a little too acidic for me and the pasteis de nata was okay as well. Cost: A little on the pricier side for sure but generally it was a good experience and worth a visit. Environment: Fairly decent amount of seating/table available. I chose to sit by the window and it was such a good overlooking window of the town! Service: Quick! Although I did go when it seemed on the slower side. Like all coffee shops, I'm sure there might be a little wait if there are a lot of people to tend to at once. Uniqueness: Cute overlooking coffee shop to take a break and have a cup of warm coffee and something sweet!

So I didn't try any of their *food* food, which seems to be a focus, but they're definitely providing a great service to anyone in the area who needs some quality morning coffee. 4 euro for an oat milk latte is a pretty great price, and it was a great latte. Since I was there and saw that they also sold pastries, I also got a filled croissant for 3 euro, which made a great breakfast - the croissant itself, honestly, was just good, but the cream filling was fantastic. p.s. if you're just here for a to-go coffee like I was - there's signage around, or at least was when I was there, that makes it seem like they only have table service, so I awkwardly saw at a table until they told me I could absolutely also order at the counter, especially if I was ordering to-go.

This is probably more a 3-star, but with so so so many places serving up the Portuguese Egg Tarts…read more(Pastel de Nata), the tarts here simply pale in comparison, and the egg tarts are what their claim to fame is supposedly for. Oddly, the flakiness was inconsistent, as parts were flaky and parts were not. Also, the custard seemed as it had been sitting out for a while. It hadn't gone bad, but just didn't taste super fresh. When you've had ones that are super fresh, you can taste the difference right off the bat. I was attracted to Casa das Tortas mainly because there was a huge sign saying that they were celebrating their 125th year in business. I thought, wow, with 125 years under their belt, this place should be great. Alas, it wasn't, in any way. Not a particularly pleasant place to sit, and nothing special about the service. I should've known better when I didn't see any lines, or barely any people inside. We've been burned before in Barcelona, and even at home, when we've selected places just because they've been around forever. Old doesn't necessarily mean great or even good in any way. Sometimes it just means just old, in every way. Save your time, money and calories and head over to nearby Fabrica da Nata instead, where I saw lots of peoples and a nice little line, which moved very quickly. Most importantly, at Fabrica da Nata is where I had my best Portuguese Egg Tart, to date. I
