I was going to take my granddaughter and friends for an overnight pool party. The hotel called me that morning and told me the pool was out of order. I said we weren't coming then and expected a full refund. They said I should have called sooner. I didn't know sooner !!! After five phone calls and many messages to the corporate off (none of which they answered) I was at my wits end. After reading other reviews I found out the pool wasn't working even in 2023!!! We weren't expecting much and knew it was just a place to sleep for the night. But even though the bed was comfortable. The bathroom clean. Air conditioning works great. I can't give more than one star for a room that has roaches. Could not leave any take out food uncovered for a minute. We slept too late for breakfast but there is no way I would have tried it. The owners pay people 20 bucks to write good reviews to cover up all the bad ones. The owner sexually assaulted my niece then forced her to sign a document saying she wouldn't sue and that she quit before they would give her the payment check. They went through her phone without permission and looked through her messages and listened to her voicemail. They had her work 16 hours days without overtime pay and then did not report this on their taxes, hence committing tax fraud. Was not pleased with this hotel! Our blinds were all broken so we had to cover the window with a towel to be able to change and be comfortable. Our bathtub had a giant ball of black hair in it before we even were able to try and use it. We were woken up at 5:00 am to a fire alarm going off!!! Had to stand outside with no word on what was going on. The alarms eventually turned off with no employee saying it was all god so we all just went back inside. The fire alarm went off a total of 7 times between 5:00 am and 9:00 am!!!!!!!!! Gas station clerk next door said the fire alarm goes off at least 3 times a week where the fire department just doesn't show up anymore because the owners are too cheap to fix it. We finally had enough and left early!! This place should be shut down, it's not safe. Will never go here again! read more

I knew I was booking a crappy hotel room, so expectations were low. Room was clean. I removed the dated comforter from bed to be cautious. We slept well. Woke up to get breakfast and one guy was eating dry cereal with his fingers. No utensils available. I was thirsty. There was half of pitcher of Tang. Horrible! I had a mini muffin and went searching for ice. Very minimal options. Hot tub is very nice. Pool was freezing, the kid in it had teeth chattering. Front desk guy said pool should be 85degrees. So the kids ended up in hot tub. My husband hates kids in hot tubs. There were no cups in the room, for after brushing teeth. If they would pay attention to detail, there would potential for improvement. Had questions about billing. I believe there was a mistake. Did not feel heard. $290 for 2 nights seems extreme for a crappy motel room. That was not what I saw as price online. read more

Was in for a wedding and the price seemed right. Slightly disappointed... The room was clean upon arrival...however after spending 3 nights it became quite clear that the housekeeping staff did not service "stay-overs" (I was a housekeeper years ago). Not sure if this was due to COVID-19 restrictions (though there didn't seem to be many). Multiple times during this stay it seemed strange to walk through the lobby only to see the couple running the place utilizing it as their living room. Free breakfast left much to be desired. The only thing that really smelled good was the coffee. The pool and hot tub area (which looked very inviting) was closed for maintenance indefinitely. Would I stay here again? I have had to stay here several times now (business stay and they are the cheapest in the area, obviously for good reason) and I will now refuse to stay here, ill pay for my hotel out of pocket just so I don't have to stay here again. The first night I stayed was basically what I expected for the price outdated run down rooms. What I didn't expect was the state of the room, sticky surfaces, the alarm clock didn't work (couldn't set time) and icing on the cake I went to put some left overs from my dinner in the fridge and there was BUGS IN IT... how do you clean a room and leave bugs in the fridge. Also that stay, of the two queen beds in the room only one was even manageable to sleep on the other was so broken down and falling apart I didn't even want to set my bags on it let alone sleep there. So the second time I stayed there my expectations were even lower and yet they were still higher then what they should have been apparently... the room again was gross (basically uncleaned) the bed was hard as a rock to the point the floor might have been more comfortable had it been vacuumed, and the AC barely worked and it made so much noise it woke me up constantly all night. On to the third time I was forced to stay in this hell hole... this was probably the best room situation of the three but again cleanliness is not a priority for these ppl and the fridge didn't keep anything cold so when I put my food in there I didn't realize it wasn't going to get cold and all my food I had in there spoiled which was fun.. and the absolute best part of this stay was that I checked out but then ended up having to stay another night so I had to check back in and ended up with the same room (originally they sent me to one that wasn't even done being cleaned there was no bedding or towels or anything) and im about 80% sure these ppl didnt even change the bed sheets! I'm choosing to believe they changed them and just used the same patterned sheets twice( all the other rooms had always had just white sheets besides this one) but it very much looked like they had not considering the side I slept on the night before was flattened and the other side of the bed sheet was not. They didnt restock anything i used the night before either so apparently anyone else wanting to use ice bags or coffee cups is just sol... Pool area was closed, a huge disappointment as it was not mentioned on the website. booked the king hot tub balcony suite. Bathroom floor was disgusting!!! hair all over it, looked like someone had a haircut. Husband found an earring on the floor so the carpets hadn't been vacuumed either. There was a large gap at the base of the balcony door that was letting in the cold air. TV is super small for such an expensive room. Hot tub did not work properly either. I've never stayed in a hotel more repulsive in my life. When my family checked in, it just seemed a little dated and run down. Nothing too bad. The wifi wasn't working, but we dealt with it. Then my wife grabbed a washcloth, and it was dirty. Like it had been used, and had streaks of brown makeup all over it. She threw it on the floor for the cleaning staff to clean. We were disgusted, but went to bed and went on with our trip. The next day, our daughter grabbed a washcloth from the "clean washcloths" and there it was. Neatly folded, and still dirty. The same washcloth. I went to the front desk to complain and ask for a full refund. They completely refused, and said that because the reservation was made online, they couldn't give a refund. I asked to speak with the hotel owner, who said he could give me a different room, but wouldn't offer a refund at all. Don't stay here. read more

Awful awful. They twice cancelled my reservation on me and tried to then rebook it at a higher rate. I asked to have the original price honored and eventually they tell me that this whole time I was on just a "waiting list" even though I twice had a confirmed reservation (via email). He said this is how they do it every year for busy weekends, which means you are subject to cancellation anytime. DO NOT book here. Their confirmation emails had confirmed rooms, NOT a wait list, so this was not a miscommunication. They try to scam you to get more money on busy weekends, and then you end up with no room at all. read more

If I could leave no stars I would. Do not recommend this place. The pool has been closed for a couple years and they don't notify anyone until check in and then there is no potential for a refund, especially when booked with a third party. My sister recently visited and had planned on staying there. Got to the hotel and found out the pool was closed and they wouldn't comp her. Instead, the owner/manager gave us 2 cans of beer and a Pepsi at no charge. When they got in the room, they reached out to the booking agency and explained the situation and that they were going to seek accommodations elsewhere. The booking agency put her on hold and called the front desk of the hotel to verify the pool closure. Within seconds of the hotel hanging up with the booking agency there was a knock on the door. It was the owner/manager and he said "you can leave. I just talked to booking.com and you can leave" they weren't trying to get a free room but they only booked for the pool as they had a kiddie pool. On the way out, they had to walk past the desk where they were talking crap about the situation as if they aren't shady business owners. The hotel itself is fine. The king room we had was spacious, had a unique layout, and a woodsy themed bed. What was NOT cool, was the interrogation we experienced after we were settling into the room. We had met friends in town for weekend, and they happened to stop by the hotel just as we arrived - so I checked in and then went back outside to collect our luggage and then all of us (4 adults, 1 child, 1 baby) went to the room to visit and catch up. Moments after we closed the door, there was a knock. I opened the door and the front desk guy, whom I'd just checked in with, informed us that he'd just seen a group of people enter the hotel room. I said, "Yes, is that a problem?" and he said, "Well, you booked the room for one adult. Who is staying in this room?" Seriously? Who does that? I responded, "I am.", to which he continued with the questioning of why there were so many people in there - 4 adults visiting and 2 kids among then - THAT'S a problem? Pardon us for meeting our friends at the hotel and not a nearby restaurant or park or otherwise! After another question or two, I'd had enough and said, "Are visitors a problem at this hotel? Because I'm pretty much done with this conversation." And he walked away. Believe me, I would not recommend this place. We ended up going to a restaurant with our friends that evening to catch up, and dreaded going back to our room, because we felt so judged and uneasy that we were being watching like this. We put the Do Not Disturb sign on the door as soon as we came back and still felt like we were under surveillance. And I didn't sleep well at all that night, which didn't fare well for the local triathlon the next morning. We even avoided the breakfast at 6am we could have enjoyed, because the front desk guy had made us so uncomfortable. Their practice seems to be suspicion, hovering and harassment of guests. AmeriVu Motel Shell Lake unfortunately changed hands a couple of years ago. Several family stayed Fri. - Sun. The staffs attitudes, poor service, unclean pool, poor breakfasts with little choices; terrible beds, poor WiFi connectivity; ticks in the towels and extremely condescending staff created a very bad experience. They also tried to do a "bait and switch" on rates. I share this as an awareness for others seeking lodging in Shell Lake. We rarely complain but this situation is a -1 star! read more

This place was awful to deal with. I booked two rooms online months earlier and had a confirmation for two rooms. When we arrived they only had one room reserved and said they had no other rooms. That meant 5 people in one room as all other hotels were booked. They gave us a roll away bed to cram in the room that was broken. When I demanded to be compensated for their mistake, all I got was that they were not going to charge me extra for more than two adults in the room. So in other words no compensation. When I said that was not good enough I was told we could leave if we didn't like it. This was also not the first time this same thing had happened. Was in Shell Lake for a wedding. Only place to stay was here. Countertop had food and crumbs on it. Microwave door handle was sticky. The freezer part of the mini fridge had a bag of pizza rolls frozen and stuck inside of it. Bathtub was grimy. Ac/heater unit would not stay on for more than a minute no matter which settings you used. No liners or cover for dirty ice bucket. No glasses for drinking. A good nights sleep will not be had here. The walls are paper thin and the doors in the hallway are extremely loud.Seriously, just drive past this place. read more

Update: If you talk to Nick Rai, the owner, he will accuse you of making stuff up. He will tell you that nothing was wrong. He will tell you that he only deals with facts. However, when the facts are violations of the federal laws, he will begin speaking louder and louder. If you are a female, and you refuse to be talked to the way he was talking to me, he will tell you that you are aggressive. When you question him as to why a female is labeled aggressive vs. assertive, he then hangs up on you. I have since followed up with complaints to the Better Business Bureau. I contacted the Chamber of Commerce in Shell Lake, Wisconsin, and they have received several complaints about this hotel. They will refer you to the state of Wisconsin to file an official complaint. read more

Towels were like stained and With black smears and dingy gray! Pretty much a shit hole. No one mans the front desk. The people who run it live upstairs. I rang the bell to get there assistance and she just came and removed blanket and gave us another. All she said is it probably was what we thought and she would talk to housekeeping! Really! Deceptive reservation practices from hostile owner. Reservation was booked through the America's Best Inns & Suites corporate website. Upon arrival an additional $7.99 was billed to my credit card. When questioned the manager said it was a "resort tax" from Washburn County. The next day the female manager called it a "resort tax" from the State of Wisconsin. They list it on the bill as "Occu. Fee" under the Misc. Charges. They eventually get hostile and say they have the right to add additional charges and fees per their reservation. Room was not even a King as listed on the reservation. I did not go to the pool but water looked stagnant and murky. No heat in the room prior to arrival when temperatures were below freezing. Room was about 50 degrees when I arrived. Shampoo mini bottle in the room was half empty and obviously the one from the previous guest. When I told the manager that their property had an "F" rating with the Better Business Bureau she said " I am not surprised." Stay anywhere else that these people do not own. They also run the Cumberland Inn in Cumberland WI, the America's Best Inn in Warroad, MN (under Family Hotels, Inc.), the America's Best Inn in Antigo,WI and the America's Best Inn in Stanley, WI. They are operated under Vishav Hotels, Inc. All properties are run in the same belligerent manner and deceptive manner. Their charges were simply theft under the guise of mandatory state and county taxes. Old mattresses are like sleeping on a board, Sheets and comforters are cheap and don't appear to be washed in detergent. Towels are also the lowest shop quality towels not usually meant for human use. WiFi is very poor, slow, and intermittent. Lot was poorly cleared of ice and snow. Of the 1000 properties at which I have stayed in my life, this ranks in the bottom 10. Owner seems to have animosity and contempt for Americans. I called for a ADA room the day before check in. I was quoted $119 for the ADA room. When I got there, they told me they did not have any ADA room and they said that I never told them. That was not exactly true! I told two women that I talked to. So they gave me a regular room for $134.58 on the first floor. I walked into the room and there was no way that my husband would be able to stay in that room. He would not be able to get off the toilet. Then I was told there was a ADA whirlpool suite that was available...for $30 more. While I was checking in the person behind the desk was working with someone in housekeeping. She had claimed to make the bed and he said she did not. He was more worried about helping her then he was worried about making this guest happy! They need better workers in this hotel. Only stay here if you have to. This was my 2nd time staying in this hotel, only because the normal hotel I stay at when I'm in the area was booked. On my first trip, when I got in the room the AC/Heat unit was unplugged and it was the middle of the summer. Then later I found that the door was physically unable to latch without slamming it several times to get the latch to catch. On my 2nd trip, the sheets had obviously not been changed since there was several very noticeable long dark hairs on them. Also there was no cups in the room for water. I was a bit taken aback by the $125 charge on a Sunday night in the off-season, but we were there and we were tired. The room was pretty standard. Nothing fancy, but clean. Our complaint was the bed! Like sleeping on a slab of concrete with a sheet! Like I said, we were tired. Once the initial exhaustion passed, my new bride and I tossed and turned the rest of the night. We both woke up with back aches and headaches from wrenched backs. In this day and age where pillowtops and memory foam mattresses are prevailant in hotels of every level, I was disappointed, to say the least. The next morning I asked who appeared to be one of the owners for some restitution for or crappy night's sleep. He pointed to a sign that said, No Refunds. That should have been my clue last night at check in. " With today's social media, can you afford the kind of review I'll give?" When we arrived to check in at 3:45 we were told none of the rooms were ready because the night before had been "pretty rough". For as expensive as this room is, you would expect a lot better service. The pool area was fine, not greatly ventilated but acceptable. We were locked out of our room at 1 am when the battery went out and it took nearly an hour to gain entry. Although I understand unfortunate things like that happen, when I asked for a small credit for the inconvenience I was told there was nothing they could do about it and tried to blame the situation on us. Sadly we were with a large group and we had no other options for the weekend even after seeing other's reviews of the place. Breakfast consisted of Ho-ho's, Honeybuns, and a Waffle-maker. A BAD experience at America's Best INN & Suites in Shell Lake Wisconsin followed up by a lack of customer support. The first issue was that the hotel changed our room reservation to help maximize their profits with no consideration to what we requested. Our room was changed to one bed from two beds after we reserved our room several weeks advance. We were charged for 3 nights when we only stayed one night because our reservation was for 3 nights and we did not cancel 48 hours prior to check in. The second and biggest issue was when we tried to bring our complaint to the up the chain of command the desk clerk did not have a contact for his superior. We called and sent e-mails to the director of franchise services and the President and CEO of the franchise and we have not had any response from them. THEY DO NOT CARE THAT WE HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE. When we first arrived on Friday at the hotel we were not sure if we were going to be staying all 3 nights of the reservation. We asked Josh the manager when he needed to know this information and he stated that we should let him know by Saturday (the next day) if we would not be staying on Sunday night. After checking in we went into our room and there was only a king bed and we had reserved 2 beds. We were told that our room reservation was changed from a room with 2 beds to a room with one King bed since the computer showed that we only had 2 people on the reservation. We have 4 people in our family so I am not sure why our reservation stated 2 people. We were told that all of the rooms were full so we could not change to a room with 2 beds. The manager stated that he would try to call people who had not checked in yet but it was already 7pm and he stated that chances were slim and that he did not think that it was possible. Later on that night around 11:30pm we returned from visiting family and we were informed that we had a room with 2 beds. We informed Josh that we had already booked a motel for the second and third nights and that we would be checking out in the morning. The next morning when we checked out Josh the manager (he would not tell us his last name) would not give us a refund for any of the next 2 nights even though he stated the night before that we could cancel the third night if we told him by this time. Josh stated that he needed a manager's password to over-ride the computer. I asked for his manager and this is where the biggest issue comes in. I asked Josh who the manager was and he informed us that Nick was the manager Josh stated that he did not know Nick's last name and that he had no way of contacting him. When asked why they would not give last names Josh stated that it was corporate policy. This is when Josh stepped back away from the counter and continued the conversation while leaning on the counter behind him. After we returned home we called the hotel daily trying to speak to Nick. He was never there and the hotel staff had no way of getting a hold of him. Finally on the following Friday Nick Shah called my wife and she stated that the conversation did not go well. She gave me his number and I called him a few hours later to discuss the issues. Nick would not give me his last name and he also stated that he was the regional manager. Nick Shah is the owner of the hotel so why is he hiding this fact? Nick Shah was very confrontational and proceeded to lecture me on why I was wrong. My wife reached out to Kevin Green, the Director of Franchise services, by leaving phone messages to let the franchise know that we were having an issue with the regional manager of the hotel and his only reply was an e-mail that stated Nick Shah is the owner and that he would be the one to take care of any issues. I replied to Kevin's e-mail and asked that someone other than Nick contact us so that we could have a civil conversation and I have not had any response from this e-mail either. I then sent e-mails to Kevin Green and Doug Collins, the President and CEO of Americas Best Franchising INC, and I have not had any response back from either of them. First of all if I could give them no star I would. Second don't believe they are under new management, they are not. We stayed in 2012 & 2014 and got the same horrible Condescending and dishonest manager/owner both times. They are not under new management, we fell for that this year and will never step foot in that hotel again. We had a family reunion booked in Shell Lake and we booked no less than 15 rooms for 1-3 nights two years running. There was not a single person either year who would give this hotel any rating above no stars. They will quote you a guaranteed rate and when you check in you are charged significantly more than quoted, and every person was charged a different rate, regardless of the fact we were told we would all be charged the same rate. The pool has mold on the slide and is dangerous and slimy. The water is questionable. Our bathroom sink did not drain. No housekeeping services for two days. The continental breakfast is laughable, what they called milk we are sure was not milk, some sugar cereal, weak coffee, some stale mini muffins. They close it up early and don't refill things so what little there is runs out. I have honestly never been treated so poorly anyplace before, I can't believe I actually paid to stay there. If you ask the simplest question you are spoken to like you are not worth answering, and most questions are not answered and you are ignored. To say they get hostile is an understatement, they down right treat you like you aren't worth the bother. The lamps don't work, most of our tv's didn't work and when you call for help they literally holler at you that you must have broken it. Our room keys kept becoming deactivated, for no reason on our part, and we were told to be more careful or we would be charged for our room keys. I can not stress enough to not ever set foot in this hotel, after the first year we vowed never to go back. Because we were told it was under new management and since it was a convenient location we gave them another shot. We were mistaken to have done that, the second year was worse than the first, and I didn't think that was possible. Stay in Spooner if you need to find a decent reputable hotel, don't even think about this place. Oh, one other note, the clerk in the Cenex next door to the hotel told us the police are called to the hotel 3-4 times a week. Couple that with the Better Business Rating of an F and I think you will be wise to steer clear of this Hotel. read more

This on my list of DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL EVER!!!!! We checked into our room late Friday night and wanted to go straight to bed after driving for 6 hours. My kids jumped onto the bed and pulled back the blankets. My daughter noticed a little black bug on the pillow just before she laid down. I called the front desk to complain and move to another room. The person at the front desk told me it wasn't cleaned prior because nobody has stayed in the room for weeks (not sure what to thing). I went down to the front desk, they asked me to move to the room next door. I used the key, opened the door and it was occupied. The man and his wife were not happy at all that I was given a room key to their room. I had to do some explaining. I went back to the front desk and complained again. They moved me to another room that wasn't occupied but it was near the front desk and was on the noisy side. My family and I didn't sleep at all the 1st night as we were worried about bed bugs. The continental breakfast was cheap food. We watched them open a Walmart branded muffin bag to lay out as breakfast. Nearly everything was repackaged Walmart items. The breakfast wasn't the best. The only food you could eat hot was a waffle. At checkout, I complained about the bed bug and multiple room changes and asked for a discount for this inconvenience. I was told I would need to talk to the owners who weren't around. I asked them to call me so we can work this out. 4 days later, I had to call them back and they told me there was no resolution yet. The front desk called me back over one week after my stay and told me they would not provide any type of a discount but they would discount any future stays. I will never spend a penny in this cheap motel ever again and was insulted that they wouldn't discount my bill after restless nights. Plus, they weren't giving us a copy of our bill until we asked.
