The sites are extremely spacious and well set up as the owner is also a coach owner. The grounds are immaculate and they host music evert Tuesday night that includes catered food from local vendors. The hosts are so friendly and helpful. During our stay we went to a small town festival and a local county fair. The owners are continually working on improvements on this new campground. If you are traveling through the Rice Lake area this is definitely a resort to stay at. You are not treated as a customer at this resort but truly as a guest. We will definitely be back.

Since my last review my family has grown and now my toddlers (2 and 3 years older) are along for the week. We have spent each day fishing, going down to the beach, visiting with Helen - the amazing lady that owns Stone Hill Resort - and playing on the playground with the children. The beach and sandy entry to the lake is AWESOME for the kids and the shape and turn of the dock makes a natural swimming area that has a max depth of about 16" making it a PERFECT way to introduce the toddlers to the lake and swimming in it (while you can keep them in an area that is fairly controlled for safety). Stone Hill has a pontoon boat that you can rent for the week (well worth it and SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper than the in-town rental options). Each cabin unit comes with an aluminum fishing boat. Since I last reviewed Stone Hill they have added direct tv and wifi. It is done in a nice way with nothing rustic being taken away but instead supplemented with these additions. This is the singe BEST vacation rental option in northern Wisconsin, still a slice of old Hayward, WI Resort history and an amazing 5 star experience every time I come.

You can even buy live bait onsite if you need it. We enjoyed seeing some of the wildlife in the area as well. Pheasants stroll the grounds and eagles are common along the southwest side of the lake. The flower garden is beautiful and has a path going through it so you can get a better view. Prices for cottage rental were either comparable or better than the other resorts nearby. And the staff is really friendly and helpful. An all around great experience and we already plan on coming back next year.

The 3rd generation is setting up themselves to succeed already, they know the business from various angles. Their tag "perpetually new" is true, they update the cabins, boats, and grounds regularly. It's more expensive than other places perhaps, but worth every single penny. And it's worth getting on the waiting list for these cabins. We've been to many WI resorts in many decades and this is the one we can't wait to re-visit.

As far as the cabins, it's hard to give a sub par review because I really wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt but in the end, it really just wasn't what we were expecting and hope others can learn from it. I will start with the pros: clean cabins, close lake access with docks for boats to pull in, great area to walk in, safe and quiet, close to downtown Hayward, cabin 5 had a great screened in porch, AC is a plus, had fun fishing on the lake but had to get out of the bay. Cons: resort term used loosely as there are minimal amenities, no swimming beach, lodge closed Sun-Tues, boat rental not available on site (although brochure says it is), many missing kitchen tools in cabins, was told all cabins came with bedding but there were only sheets - you'll need to bring your own pillows and blankets, you're kind of on your own once you check in as as property managers did not seem be accessible/available for questions or help after hours, don't expect cell service. We made the most of it and it was an overall decent place to stay but felt a little mislead and wish we'd have asked more questions/had more info about what we were really getting.

So happy I discovered this little gem on Nelson Lake. Have been wanting to try their Friday fish fry, maybe next time I am in the area. Go try this place.......now! Kitchen open Wednesday through Sunday. And they have Happy Hour (3-6). That's all.
