Do yourself a favor and make sure you ask up front what their fees are and get it in writing. Also make sure you have a rep who has a reputation for knowing their stuff. My husband and I went to see about how to go about filing our taxes and what we needed to do as we had an unique situation where his new employer accidentally took out both VA and DC taxes. After explaining the situation and that we had fixed the issue to having only VA taken out-- but needed help to get a refund for DC payments, the Rep Izza, told us we would file for both states and maybe get some credit back, and that because his work was located in DC and we lived in VA we would be required to pay both. This is NOT TRUE. I even told her this was not to true and quoted from the internet but she would not entertain this possibility. What she should have said is we can fill out DC Form D-40B Nonresident Request for Refund (2024) as we were never a resident of DC. There were a few other questions I asked, and did not get solid answers on. It was at this point I should have gotten up and told her thanks. She said she would look up certain questions I had, and proceeded to ask us several questions from her computer screen. After coming home, I then decided to take the time googled, called and found out the proper form for refund myself. I then showed my husband and we agreed the rep was not knowledgeable. She then proceeds to call my husband and say we owe her a $75 consultation fee, a fee again for WRONG information. She would have also likely charged us to file for 2 state tax returns, when only one was necessary. I have since called the main customer service line and put in a complaint. If H&R Block wants to start charging for time (and not correct information/filing) then they need to have people sign a contract stating this upfront. I did not feel confident having this rep do my taxes and will likely not be back. Hopefully H&R block will take the time to train their employees. I don't know anyone who is willing to pay someone for bad advice or to file double charges for being incorrectly taxed twice. Talk about insult to injury. There is also a reason why they only have a few reviews...somehow all the bad reviews keep disappearing. BEWARE!!

Most HR Blocks are the same. It's a small room with a bunch of cubicles and some basic desks. There's no differentiation there as far as this HR block goes. JMU Tax - Unprofessional, Unreliable, and Costly…read more I had high hopes when I hired JMU Tax to handle my 2023 tax preparation, but my experience has been nothing short of frustrating and disappointing. Despite first meeting with them in April 2024, their incompetence delayed preparation and filing until June 2024. In November I received a notification from the IRS that my taxes had not been filed. I gave them multiple opportunities to make things right. Not only did they fail to complete the work I paid for, but they also refused to issue a refund despite their negligence. From the start, communication was a major issue. My scheduled appointment was mishandled, last-minute cancellations further stalled the process, calls went unanswered, the Annandale office was locked during business hours, and even when I visited in person, errors occurred--such as being given the wrong or incomplete tax documents. This caused unnecessary stress as a new small business owner who relies on timely and accurate filings. When I realized how severely they had mishandled my tax filings, I had to hire another tax professional to review their work and file my taxes. If you're looking for a reliable and responsive tax service, I cannot recommend JMU Tax based on my experience. The lack of professionalism, follow-through, and care for their clients made this a costly and stressful ordeal.

I also had another well-respected account check over this return, and she found that I had not only been mistakenly charged a penalty by this firm, but that I had been overcharged an additional $1500 in tax because of another error. Sadly, the deadline had passed for getting this money refunded. When I informed Mr. Ghannam of this, and did not demand or ask for one penny back, he challenged me to bet $2000 that he had made a mistake, urging me to put the money in an escrow with his "lawyer" and he would do the same. If the IRS verified he had made a mistake, I would get his money, but if the return was perfect he would get my money. I didn't want to take his money as he did not know that I already had a letter from the IRS proving he had made a mistake. He insisted once again that we do this, so I told him I accepted his challenge, but I told him we didn't need to go to the IRS because I already have a letter from the IRS indicating his mistake. When I produced this letter, he cursed me again and again, made up some story that I had made the mistake, threw an attack on my religious faith, cursed me again, and then told me to stop harassing him. I have his filthy emails and I'm prepared to share them. The person who wrote these email appears to be mentally unstable, or he simply wanted to appear insane and violent in hopes I wouldn't sue him in small claims court. If this agency did your taxes, get them looked over by a professional before it's too late. If you are thinking of having them do your taxes or any other work for you, good luck. If a problem comes up, be prepared to be blamed for the mistakes the agency made and get ready for some filthy insults that I can't put here.

Upon calling the front desk, I learned that the return had, in fact, not been filed until the day that I called. BUT THEN I got a penalty. Asked for them to pay me. Front desk guy said Mr Yi is busy and won't be able to write me a check for a while. what does that even mean?? Also, throughout this entire process, he hasn't done the common courtesy to call me and apologize for that huge mess up his company did and instead communicate communicated to me via his front desk representative You clearly is a young guy who honestly sounds like he doesn't know what he's doing or the entire company is doing.
