My recent visit to Breakmasters in Bakersfield left me with mixed feelings. While the customer…read moreservice and facility were exceptional, the pricing and the recommendations for service raised some significant concerns. This is just my personal opinion on my specific case.
From the moment I walked in, I was impressed. The office area was clean. They even had water available for clients, a thoughtful gesture, especially considering how hot Bakersfield can get. The waiting room temperature was perfect. The availability of a clean bathroom for customers also added to the overall positive first impression. If my experience were solely based on these aspects, Breakmasters would easily earn a five-star review. Wendy, a staff member, was particularly noteworthy. She was incredibly professional, cordial, and genuinely nice, making the initial interaction a pleasant one.
The brake inspection itself seemed to proceed efficiently. Despite having four other customers in the waiting room, and my car being four of four in line, they managed to move people through us quickly, with most customers seemingly in and out within an hour. This efficiency was certainly A+.
However, the quote I received for the necessary repairs was where my positive experience began to unravel. The price quoted by Breakmasters was comparable to what I would expect from a dealership, and frankly, if I'm going to pay dealership prices, I would opt for the dealership to ensure I receive OEM parts. The estimate felt exorbitant, almost as if Breakmasters was trying to maximize their profit as much as possible.
Upon further review of the estimate, a significant red flag appeared: the inclusion of my rear brake pads, which genuinely did not need to be replaced. (PHOTO INCLUDED) While there had been no issues with the back brakes, I had specifically asked them to differentiate between what had to be changed and what was merely suggested. I asked them to check the front brakes and rotors, as well as the rear brakes in rotors. I was told the front brakes and rotors, or definitely well beyond the marks in should be changed immediately to prevent any problems with the vehicle, I was explicitly told that the rear pads had to be changed and were "well beyond the mark. And they did tell me the rotors should be changed until I ask them, what percentage would you rate them? When I was told eighty percent, I told them let's wait 9n that. Being told that my rear breaks must be changed" simply wasn't true. This experience served as a stark reminder for anyone considering a visit to a "one-stop shop" like Breakmasters: always check your own equipment beforehand, or have someone you implicitly trust provide a second opinion.
My concerns were further amplified by a conversation I had with another customer in the waiting room. He recounted his current experience where his brakes, replaced by Breakmasters, lasted less than 7,000 miles. When he pushed back, citing the unusually short lifespan, and that his first set of breaks, it lasted thirty thousand miles before they changed him, and once they reviewed his records, Breakmasters did eventually replace his brakes for free under warranty. However, he expressed strong dissatisfaction, stating that if he were able to change them himself,(he had a bad back) he would have done the repair rather than bringing it back to them. He also stated that he would never return to Breakmasters again , unless these break pads, it didn't last either. Our conversation began when I simply asked if he would recommend the business; his unequivocal "no" was quite telling.
In conclusion, while Breakmasters excels in customer service and facility cleanliness, the questionable pricing and potentially unnecessary service recommendations are significant drawbacks. My experience, coupled with the troubling account from another customer, suggests a need for consumers to exercise caution and diligence. It's a prime example of why getting a second opinion or having a trusted mechanic review your vehicle's needs before committing to a repair is always a wise decision.
