I needed to take a infant/child CPR course since I'll have a little one soon so I decided to take it here at the Red Cross, though there were other options available too. I was mostly worried about parking in this area but they do have some parking just west of the facility, across Leavitt. You enter that lot lot Harrison. Much/most/all of the street along Leavitt is 30 minute parking only which could work if you have an appointment here to donate blood, depending upon how long the appointments are. The course was good. It lasted about two and a half hours or so and began with adult CPR and choking techniques, from which the child and infant techniques are derived so you learn those modifications toward the end of the course. There were a couple people here who didn't need/want the child instruction so they were able to leave during the break. Due to the pandemic, they assign two people to a dummy instead of three as they used to, but they do partner you up if you're alone to ensure that you have someone observing to make sure you're getting the techniques correct. Can't say enough good things about my experiences donating blood with the Red Cross. It had been quite a few years since I donated, but I decided to pick it back up regularly last year during COVID. I have donated at a variety of locations and drives in the city, and each time has been so great. The staff are always so friendly and welcoming. They make you feel comfortable since it can be a scary thing if you don't like blood! At today's drive, Jose was so incredibly friendly and explained everything very clearly, which I imagine would be so helpful for a first time donor. They also offer flexible appointments and a variety of locations for convenience. I highly recommend the app as well-- so easy! read more

WISHFUL THINKING I wish I could tell you that I did something good last weekend, something that saved lives. I wish I could tell you that I love wearing the stylized Games of Thrones t-shirt they promised us. I wish I could tell you that whoever organized the blood drive at St. Peter's Church in Northlake wasn't a massively incompetent assbag. I wish........ ___________________________ In the past, I've donated with LifeSource (through work) and Heartland (for which I hit the 1GAL lifetime mark). Between the non-stop phonecalls from the former and a near-catastrophic experience with the latter, I pretty much swore off blood donations permanently. That changed when Nichole C said American Red Cross would be giving away a Game of Thrones t-shirt with a really cool blood spatter graphic on it, plus a chance to win a trip for the GoT Season 8 premier. Yeah man, sign me up! After a long hiatus, she convinced me to come out and donate some of my A+, high-octane manblood. Despite some previous issues I've had with donating in general, I decided to put that all aside for a 1-time appointment on Sunday 3/10/19 due to the special promotion they had going on. So we ate a huge breakfast and went to St. Peter's Church (Syrian Orthodox) in Northlake, where the donation van was. Upon entering the church, we were told that they were double-booked and that the current wait was about 1-1/2 hours. In the eloquent words of Lil' Jon, "WWWHAT?!?!" How does one grossly overbook appointments for blood donation?? This isn't some f*cking cut-rate airline where you can bump people at will and stick 'em on the next flight. This isn't a neighborhood Chili's where we can hang out at the bar for a while until our table is ready. For something as serious as donating a vital bodily fluid, you'd think more thought and/or care would have gone into planning this sh*tshow. Whoever's responsible for organizing this screwed up REAL bad. Like, they should be fired/flogged/forced to listen to Nickelback. The young girl inside the church appeared to be in charge, but her handwritten list of names didn't inspire confidence. Maybe all us crackers got racially profiled and were turned away based on being too light-skinned, who the hell knows? But we weren't alone. Ashley A witnessed the exact same thing for HER donation, which is beyond appalling. We didn't see a single authorized employee here (though they could've been hiding in the van). The couple in front of us followed suit -- walked in, was informed of the sitrep, walked right out. * TL;DR * The end result? We get NO cool t-shirt, NO chance to win a trip to the GoT premier, NO post-donation cookies. The only good news is that we got to keep our current blood and definitely won't contract Hep C, at least for the time being. You know what I was really looking forward to? Going out for a post-donation drink and getting hammered after like 2 shots. This was a gigantic f*ckup that shouldn't have happened in the first place. A scheduling snafu is a very, very avoidable thing. I've donated well over 100 times in my life and never experienced such bollocks. Honestly, unless they hand me a $50 Amazon gift card AND a free t-shirt, it's unlikely I'll ever sign up to donate with American Red Cross again. What an absolute waste of time. read more

Employees are unengaged, on their phones, or huddled around a monitor doing god knows for hours. Meanwhile, people plugged into machines for hours at a time are given as much attention as they can ask for. Facilities are clean and well kept, property management is well done. read more

I guess American Red Cross on Harrison is not in the receiving blood donation spirit, even when you have appointments. If you want to donate blood don't go on Harrison and Leavitt this #americanredcross location customer service is terrible. Employee(s) are not accommodating, my family (yes whole family two with blood types that is in high demand) was not serviced because two had appointments and two didn't. I can see if the place was packed, but there was literally no one in there (only 3 employees). This is a review of their disaster relief services only. American Red Cross has four employees each paid over $600,000/year, but the people who showed up after my house burned last year apparently were volunteers. They provided blankets and toiletries, some money (which I ended up returning), and help with contacting essential service providers. This was useful, and would have been essential if we hadn't had insurance, a car, and credit cards. read more

I've gone here twice for appointments but never actually donated. The first time, we had trouble with the parking situation and ended up being 10 minutes late with the appointments cancelled. There is no clear information online where to park, and the cancelation policy was not made clear to me in advance. The second time, it was my fault I couldn't donate (iron a little low), but it took a lotttttt of waiting and, seemingly, confusion from staff to reach that conclusion. If you live nearby and its convenient to get here, definitely give it a try! Beautiful building and everyone is friendly enough. I will choose to donate at drives in my immediate area now though. read more

Absolutely top notch service! I attended a blood donation organized by the White Sox Volunteer Corps and serviced by the Chicago Red Cross. The Red Cross did an excellent job of pre-donation setup so that everyone could move quickly through the check-in process. The staff and volunteers of the Red Cross were very friendly and the phlebotomists were really gentile and careful during the donation process. After my donation experience with them at U.S. Cellular field, I will definitely go back to their donation centers and continue blood donation with their organization. read more

As always, they are on top of everything. In times of crisis, they will be the first ones at a scene. After the tornado hit in Illinois, I knew theuy be the first showing up, after all Ive worked with them for 13plus yrs as a volunteer. I can tell you these people that volunteer genuinely care. We dont get paid as some people think. If you ever need ANY HELP, please see the american red cross, they will help or find you a solution by giving you referrals. There are many different ARC so please just google the nearest one if your ever in need, if a neighbor's home is on fire, anything. Literally, angels that walk among us. ALTHOUGH you may get frustrated becuz of what your going through, please realize ARC is there to ease your life a bit. Dont be rude. Think before you speak, when your feeling overwhelmed. After all, the volunteers are there to help, but have nothing to do with goverment agencies, FEMA, or insurance agencies. BE NICE!!! read more

Let me start by saying...previous experiences, and likely future will be much better. Also happy to add another review at that point. This happened today.... So this happened today. (I have pictures, reported the license plate etc.An American Red Cross of Greater Chicagoland vehicle was parked blocking my driveway to my shared garage of my building) This is note I sent to them via Facebook as well. I arrived home at 11:30am 5/18/15 and was unable to get into my garage. I waited about 15 minutes, then called American Red Cross-Chicago twice. First time I was put in contact with someone that said they would contact the driver. The second was a follow up as it was now 12pm, and car still there. Blocking the entrance for the garage. Plenty of street parking available, and meters not far away on Milwaukee. Not the point for my own car, but for this one. I pay good tax money to live in this building and own a space as well. There is construction going on and it dos not appeal to me to park outside when I own a space. ALso not the main point. This is a safety hazard for true emergencies. People unable to get out etc too. I then called 31, (was on hold; decided to wait a few more minutes) as I informed your call center I would do. I went inside did what I needed to do, and then came back and the car still hadn't moved. got in touch with 311, and they dispatched a police officer. I called the center back again, and let them know that the police were called. They claimed they were unable to get in touch as he was teaching a class. Also not my problem. His class is not more important than others in possible need. Or in general... Fortunately for him he came before the police. I let him know how selfish it is especially when representing a "brand" such as the American Red Cross. If most people were to disrespect others and their employment like this, then they would no longer have employment. This is definitely not someone I would want working for me. He said he parked there because there were no spots. Look for them, they are there. This is residential. Go park on Milwaukee at a meter a block away. Or Western. I don't care. You do not block a driveway. Chris, you really need to work on your ethics and professionalism. read more
