I will be posting a two part review. This is 1 of 2…read more I rented the American Legion Hall for my wedding reception on 5/17/14. About a year before the event I googled the hall and was sad to see that there were no reviews and no photos of the hall's interior posted online; so I checked out a key ($25 fee, returned when the key is returned) and for the price I was happy with what was available. To clarify a few things before hand: The decorator I hired was not paid to set up tables and chairs, so that became my job the morning of the wedding. I pre-paid the wedding photographer for a set number of hours. Our event was not catered & we needed the kitchen to finish cooking the food and to reheat it when guests started to arrive. Our event was 'scheduled' to happen from 4pm - 11pm. Renting the hall was no problem at all. I paid the rental fee, deposit, insurance and security through the Parks and Recreation Department, located in downtown Modesto. The Parks & Recreation employees were friendly and professional. PRO's: The rental fees were within my budget and they allow you to make payments. The hall has a beautiful deck (which we used to take our wedding photos) shaded by large trees, a bar area, a full kitchen and large main room. The main room has lights that can be dimmed, which worked perfectly when it was time to dance! Tables and chairs are included in the rental. A stage is also available for use. The hall is 'yours' to use from 6am the day of your event until 1am the morning after; for a total of 19 hours. If you use debit/credit to pay your deposit, it is supposed to be refunded to you within 5 business days. The majority of issues i encountered took place on the day of my event, my wedding day. If I were to assign blame I would have to say that building maintenance's lack of professionalism was the root of the majority of the issues I encountered. Building maintenance works with the Parks & Recreation department, but in my experience they did not coordinate very well due to the fact that my event was held on a weekend, when the Parks & Rec department was closed. CON's: The rules for decorating are strict. The deck had red fire ants, was not swept before our event and the outlets on the deck have all been vandalized. The bar area has 3-4 sinks, all of which were clogged with dirt and stagnant water. The windows throughout the hall have vertical blinds, all of them have missing slats; giving the interior a 'run down' feel. A few of the outlets inside the main hall are taped off with duct tape, I assume this means they were not working.

It was nice tho considering it was 5 of us and got in for free. The bracelet for the rides was crazy expensive for the very limited rides and for some rides u need two people. My nephew wasnt able to get on all the rides because of that. The farm animal part was alright, kinda small. One thing that sucked was one of the booths to win a super mario stuff toy. The guys running the booth got mad cuz a lil girl won a stuffed toyS i heard them speaking in spanish getting all upset cuz a lil girl won a bit stuffed animal. That just put a bad taste in my mouth. Everything was super expensive, but thats always like that at every fair. I would come again of the entry was free all the time.

To see one of my favorite R&B bands perform, Con Funk Shun who originate from my hometown of Vallejo. $15 bucks entry fee for the fair + the concert was the deal of the century! Overall, this fair could really teach all the other fairs up & down the state something about value. A return to value before most all other fairs started gettin' all greedy & trying to rip everyone off it seems (Alameda Co. Fair, Marin Co. Fair, Solano Co. Fair, CA State Fair are you listening?). OK duh, it gets hot here in Turlock during the summer (peaking @ 102 this day), like at some of those other summertime fairs I mentioned. But, this fair has quite a few cooling stations & devices throughout the fair to keep you comfortable. Such as oversized misting fans in the foodcourt areas and air conditioning & fans in the other buildings. It also can get a bit dusty out here amid all these farmlands. A face mask might be helpful for some, idk? Fair looks small and rather underwhelming from the Archway main entrance & ticketing area, but don't be fooled, as there's quite a bit to see inside. Combined tons of booths & food vendors and a respectable amount of traditional rides. And with very decent prices all things considered. Great fair for kids too with a lot for them. $10 bucks to park, which ain't bad at all, but--even better-- Turlock transit buses were free for the week with free parking & shuttle accommodations from nearby Stanislaus State Univ. Throw out all those stereotypes you might've had about Turlock and similar nearby farming towns. It's really a charming + modern area as was exemplified by this great county fair. Will def. be on my list to return next year. Good time!

I first met Veteran Service Officer Carissa a couple of months back who spent a lot of time with me and gave me a list of documents that I had to get in order to put forward a claim. She was very kind, understanding, and professional when dealing with me. A few months later I came back with all of the documentation she had requested. She could not have been any nicer and really tried to help me in filing this claim. I know it's her job to do this, but her attitude and support really exceeded my expectations. During the discussion, she brought up many things that I had not even thought about, such as the types of medications I was on. The person who was behind the counter was also very friendly and helpful! I've never had any problems with appointment times. All in all I was very pleased with how I was treated and how my case was being handled. The office was very clean and laid out very nicely, with ample parking. I really cannot say anything negative about my experience here and I look forward to a resolution of my claim. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that if you are a Veteran and you need assistance, you should go to one of the Veterans Service Centers and if you come to this one on North Winchester, please ask for Carissa.
