5-16-2023 My experience at Post 39 in Gilbert, Arizona was not as expected from a American Legion Post In search of a new Post to join I went to the Gilbert, Arizona post. While looking over the Post I was not greeted or spoken to. I went back outside and asked people coming in," was this post friendly to smokers?", especially cigar smokers. They assured me that it was. As they told me there was a patio out front that allowed smoking. On the patio, I met with Mark, and he assured me that I would not be hassled about smoking. He suggested I go inside to the bar area, there was a leader there. I went in and was greeted with a not so smart person commented "Another Veteran", I was wearing my Vietnam Veteran hat. Kind of reminded me of 1968 when I returned to the USA. I asked for the leader's name and did not get any answer. I then said I was a smoker. The bartender screamed out "There is no smoking here". It was loud enough for of the nonsmoker zealots to hear, heads raised. I then said "Guess that answers my inquiry. So, the same not so smart person said "Adios". I made the mistake of thinking Veterans would tell the bar tender to calm down. But the Girly men did not speak up. I stole a phrase from Arnold Schwarzenegger when he was Governor of California. Then I started to leave, and a Veteran stopped me and said if I was looking for a American Legion Post that allowed smoking, there was one on Alma School and Ray. I explained that I was looking for a Post that did not treat smokers as secondhand citizens. The Bar tender than said "Things change". Did she mean common courtesy, understanding, respect, or common sense. Then the not so smart person said "Adios", I said I will leave when I decide. He repeated "I thought you were leaving". Now let's walk through this the way I would have expected to be treated. When I came into to discuss joining the Post, I would hear "Welcome Home" upon seeing the Vietnam Veteran hat. I would expect the lead person at the bar to introduce himself. And when the bartender screamed out "There is no smoking here", she would have been told to take a break. Then the leader could explain about the smoking accommodations that are made available for the smokers. My history with the American Legion is through a mentor who fought In France during World War 1, he told me the horrors of war. He explained the history of the American legion. I have been a supporter of the American Legion since the 1940s. Question, does this post represent the values of the American Legion? Robert D Mandarino VF 143 USS Constellation
