High prices for bad food. Salads were topped with un edible dressings and Hamburgers were overcooked. Not recommended at all.

For those of you who aren't in the mood to read through this whole review let's go straight into…read morespoiler territory: without a doubt the worst dining experience we've had during our stay in Albufeira. Now you must be wondering why you came across all those positive ratings, while here you are about to read what must be the Roast of American Diner. Well, allow me to elaborate and I'll bet your sweet ass that you will be convinced that you should NEVER set foot in this so called ´´restaurant´´. First off, I'll give credit where credit is due. The place looks nice from the outside; truly has the look and feel of a 50's American diner. Adding to that, the milkshakes where excellent, although quite pricy (4,50) and the glasses in which it was served where a bit small. Now that we got all the positives out of the way it's time to rip this diner to shreds. After we got our drinks from the seemingly nice waiter we were ready to order. 2 friends of mine ordered the Cesar salad pizza, 1 ordered the hamburger, another one the chicken parmesan, another one the chicken kebab and I ordered the Submariner pizza (with all kinds of sea creatures on there). All seemed good so far, but little did we know we would have to wait 1,5 hours before we would finally receive our food. Yes, that's right: 1,5 hours. Now if the restaurant was packed and there would not be a single table available we would understand, but the night we were sitting here there were only 3 or 4 other tables. This on itself is simply unacceptable, but if the food would have been any good we might have let it slide and I would not have spend any of my time writing this extensive review. So, how was the food you ask? Glad you asked. We thought about it long and hard and one word came into mind: DIS-GUS-TING. No really, there is no better way to describe the food we got served at this diner. One of pizza bottoms of the Cesar salad pizzas was so doughy we were certain they rushed it out of the kitchen because it was already taking way too long. Both the chicken parmesan as well as the chicken kebab was incredibly dry. The time it took to properly chew a piece of chicken took about as long as a lap dance at one of the local strip clubs lasted. The hamburger wasn't all that bad, but definitely not something to write home about. And the Submariner? My god...I'm not exaggerating when I say that it was by far the most unsatisfying experience I've ever had while eating at a restaurant. It's difficult to describe what exactly was missing, but I'm pretty sure it was flavor. Here I was, eating this pizza that wouldn't even satisfy a stray dog while getting more nauseous with each bite I took. Although managing to dispose half of the pizza I had to tap out before the pizza slices I just consumed would crawl out of my throat. All in all, nobody finished their meal and nobody (except for the guy who ordered the hamburger) was even slightly satisfied. Of course, we didn't want to let this go unnoticed, which is why we called over the waiter to describe what we thought was wrong with the dishes they served us. We hoped that, by showing our dissatisfaction with our meals, we would at least get some form of compensation. Nope. Nothing. Nada. Jack shit. Whatever you want to call it, we didn't get anything; not even an apology for ruining our appetite. And here's the real kicker: these dishes were actually really expensive, especially considering the quality of food. The dishes varied between the 15-20 euros, with the exception of the hamburger (about 7,50). Now to top it all off we weren't allowed to pay with our ATM card, which meant we had to walk for 5 minutes to the nearest ATM machine, pay an additional amount of 3 euros at the machine, walk all the way back just so we could pay for our terrible dinner. Look, I know this all may sound like we are just being aholes that didn't enjoy their meal and want to rant about it just for fun. But you can take my word that everything I've described in this review is honest. Eating at this diner truly felt like a scam and I simply cannot stand the thought of other people experiencing the same. Please DO NOT go to the American Diner and safe yourself from a disappointing, appetite-ruining dining experiencing. Thank you for hearing us out and I hope we managed to convince you in an honest, yet entertaining fashion.

Definitely didn't think I'd be coming here for my first dinner in Portugal. Steak and Grill…read more Thought it was American food. Then we saw the word Rodizio. Rodizio is basically ayce meat options where servers bring around various cuts of meat on large skewers and then if you want it, they slice you a portion at your table. The most famous Torontonian equivalent is Copacabana. We got there before they opened. They told us 6pm. We loafed around til then. We tried going back. They told us 7pm even though their door said 6. We opted to wait. Worth the wait. The standard rodizio here costs $13.90 euros and includes the basic meat package (12 meats + grilled pineapple) and both their hot and cold buffet. Drinks cost extra, but a small beer or juice will set you back about $1.80 euros, and a litre of their house wine will cost $9 euros. Be warned though. If you order in English, specify what you want, because their fresh squeezed orange juice is $3.50 euros a glass. It's tasty, but expensive. Their hot buffet only has like 8 items including rice, beans, fries, some kind of stew, and something that tastes like a mix between salt cod and mashed potatoes and some kind of cream pasta. Their salad bar is not bad, but not fantastic either. I appreciated the pickled veggie assortment though. Helps cut down on the fat from the red meat. OH THE RED MEAT. The menu said 12 kinds and lists them out. We got more than 12 kinds. Chicken drumsticks, chicken with bacon, chicken heart, pork chunk, roast pork, pork with cheese, sausage, rump steak, steak with garlic, tenderloin, beef with bacon and cheese, some other kind of steak I can't identify, ham, rump steak roast, etc. SO MUCH MEAT. Most of it was pretty tasty, albeit a tad salty. Surprisingly, the chicken dishes stand out as being juicy and piping hot and tender. Also the beef with bacon and cheese, and the tenderloin. THEN GRILLED PINEAPPLE. With cinnamon. So good. So sweet. Amazing with the meat, especially with the beef, bacon, and cheese. I think my dad ate a whole pineapple on his own. The servers were fantastic about it though. Very lovely service. Side note that isn't rodizio: They have a la carte seafood and meat options. Mom and aunt got seabream for $12.90 euros ish. Whole seabream. Nothing else. Delicious. Slightly salty. The rest of us got rodizio and they let mom and aunt have some of our food. As in we asked and they said yes. Pineapple goes well with fish too. If I lived in Portugal, I could see myself coming back fairly often. Best ayce experience I've had in a very long time.

Gourmet Natural is a Uruguayan-style steakhouse located about 15 minutes from the Vale do Lobo…read moreresort.  It's a little off the beaten path from the cluster of restaurants you pass along the way, and somewhat hidden.  In fact, my taxi driver zoomed right past it.  The signage isn't obvious, so keep your eyes open! The first thing you notice when walking into the restaurant, apart from how very nice the decor and ambiance is here, would be the campfire-like smell.  It soon becomes apparent what the source of this aroma is: the huge firebox (see photo) used to prepare the meat.  It dominates your field of view, drawing you ever closer, even though the hostess is trying in earnest to lead you toward the terrace.  However, once seated in this lovely outdoor dining area, the roaring flames that once entranced fade away, and you settle into a comfortable and relaxed state of being. Upon being seated, I was greeted by my waitress and presented with the cocktail list to review pre-dinner beverage options.  I settled on an orange mojito, and it was both refreshing and potent. It was a bit challenging to decide on my entree.  Despite the fact I was dining alone, I gave serious consideration to the mixed grill for two, which consisted of rib eye, sirloin and filet.  Rather, I opted for the butterflied filet with potato gratin and pan roasted asparagus.  But, to start, I enjoyed a duo of amazing empanadas.  One was filled with 3 kinds of cheese with a crust as flaky as a real Parisian croissant.  The other was filled with a well seasoned meat, the crust more dense and tender.  They were served with a piquant barbecue sauce and a nice, verdant pesto. Ah, but on to the main event.  My steak, beautifully grilled, was served plainly on a large white plate, a light streaking of sauce its only accompaniment.  I did, however, get a side of the chimichurri.  Other side sauce options included Bernaise, red wine reduction, peppercorn and creamy mushroom.  But, since this is a South American styled establishment, chimichurri was the obvious choice. The potato gratin looked outstanding, with the kind of cheesy crust one would find on a well made French onion soup.  The asparagus was bright green, sitting in a small chafing dish with a few roasted shallots and a few dabs of thick Balsamic vinegar. Cutting into my filet, I was rewarded with a perfect medium rare.  And the flavor was very much reminiscent of the beef I've enjoyed in Argentina or Brazil.  It's the kind of deep beefy flavor we just don't often get in the states (Snake River Farms or Lone Mountain being a few notable exceptions.)  Despite the excellent crust, the gratin might have been a tad too rich, but was nonetheless very tasty.  I was, however, simply blown away by the asparagus.  It was perfectly cooked, still very crisp, and tasted like it had just been picked.  In all my life I've never had such fresh tasting asparagus, or perhaps any vegetable.  Dabbing a bit of it in the Balsamic only further contributed to an already perfect side dish.  The vinegar's flavor was so intense and acid so profound, not only did it heighten the asparagus itself, it also served as an excellent means to cutting through the gratin's creamy richness.  Needless to say, I finished every single bite.  All of this was washed down with an amazing Portuguese vinho tinto, in this case a bottle of 2009 Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vines Red.  Unfortunately, my Portuguese isn't so good and was unable to discern anything from the bottle.  But, in aroma it smelled much like a Cabernet, while the flavor was similar to a Charbono or a Barbera.  In any case, it was a delicious wine and an excellent pairing. Did I need to order dessert?  Well, this is vacation afterall and I recall something about those calories not counting.  Anyway, I like options so decided to get the Gourmet Trio.  Situated on a rectangular plate were pretty substantial servings on milk toffee cheesecake, apple crumble and chocolate mousse cake.  Don't make me pick a favorite; they were all excellent in their own way.  If pressed, though, I'd probably say the cheesecake.   Service was extremely friendly, attentive and aiming to ensure the finest dining experience possible.  I have to say that they certainly hit the mark.  Although my stay in Portugal isn't over yet (I have another 4 days ahead), this is the best meal I've had and probably will have while here. I hope to be surprised in the next few days, but when you hit perfection, how can it be topped?
