I am now blessed with a lovely front landscape, the result of years of dreaming, sketching, and collecting, culminating in a completely new garden a year or so ago with the help of a professional landscaper. But as the plants filled in, I could not resist throwing just a few more things in, something playful. Garden art. First things first...last Fall we had purchased two, great birdhouses with unique personalities while on a trip to California's Central Coast adorable town of Cambria. But we were stumped (Ha! Bad pun) as to how to display them. We needed something substantial, something dependable for mounting. With those birdy treasures stashed in our trunk as we headed home, we stumbled across this hidden business not far from some fine Paso Robles area winery tasting rooms. I mention that because, no doubt, our wine tasting had an influence, most likely "loosening" our thoughts for new ideas. There they were! Piles of wooden posts, barn parts, chunks of trees, all begging for re-purposing. Some of the better pieces were housed inside their warehouse. Old, worn, weathered, full of personality (i.e cracks, cubbyholes, weathered red paint, wormholes, and coarse hewn ax marks). These were magical chunks so substantial they would most certainly outlive us all. They were parts of a very old barn that had seen its demise. These guys rescue such things for crazy folks like me, something I wholeheartedly approve. Excitedly, we pulled those birdhouses out of the trunk and started trying various options. How auspicious! It goes without saying, finding treasures like these comes at a price. They are, imo, collectibles. The business owners have carted these prize pieces long distances, some as far as the East Coast. So unless you plan a 3000 mile trip to do your own sleuthing, be thankful for places like this making it easier on you. I am enjoying my 100+ year old wood posts tremendously. They catch the eyes of everyone as they enter my garden and elicit delightful compliments. Just not sure if the birds feel the same way. We are still waiting to be homesteaded by a birdie family. After searching high and low for the perfect mantle piece we found American Barn and Wood. We were uncertain as to the length of wood we needed for our giant fireplace, so both John and Kira came to our house to advise us. We settled on a 12 foot beam and could not be happier. From start to finish they could not have been more helpful. John moved beam after beam just so we could pick the perfect mantle, they educated us on the way the beam was hewn and what each hole or notch meant, they even supplied us with information about where the beam came from (an 1840's Barn from Ohio!)! We love old, we love rustic and we love reclaimed - this is the place to find exactly that! The picture shows the size of the fireplace and the close up show other goodies we found at American Barn and Wood. The horse stall door was reclaimed from a barn and the wood with the woodpecker's nest on it is also from there. read more

Million dollar outfit & we encountered rot, not to mention their beams were so twisted we took them BACK & ATE the restocking fee. Highway robbery is putting it mildly. Too boot, the owner can be very arrogant! They don't have ANY checks & measures in place ... it's pretty much "you get what we deliver." Their showroom is absolutely gorgeous ... don't let that fool you, they don't take care of their patrons as they should! #NEVER AGAIN (fast forward to the GOOD news) American Barn & Wood offers amazing service! While the wood and other products appear to be nice, the owners were unfriendly and not helpful. I was checking out the place to determine if I wanted to make a large purchase in the future. I tried to ask questions and learn more about the product but was met with a lack of engagement, friendliness, and helpfulness - a general lack of customer service. I felt very unwelcome. I would much rather drive to San Luis to Box Kite Barnyard where they have fabulous customer service. read more

Holy cow, this place has amazing reclaimed barn wood! The really cool thing is that the owners have marked which boards came from what barns, and when you make a purchase, will give you a little info sheet telling you a little about the history of the wood you're buying. Very friendly folks- and they have help from Woody, the trusty barn cat who is always around just waiting to help you make your selection. I love going to this place- it's like a candy store for upcyclers, woodworkers, craftspeople, and those just interested in the history and preservation of Americana. Kira and John are experts and helped us every step of the way, from finding the correct sizing to coloration. The two of them walked us around and helped us find what we needed, even went as far as to move boards to pull out something from the bottom of a stack, and bring out a bowl of water and scrub brush to help us determine the true color of the wood. After purchasing several pieces of wood, they provided printed history sheets of where the wood came from. Their prices were reasonable compared to other places we got bids from. The owners are very nice people, but beware when buying barn wood as flooring. The quantities you' re charged for are not what you receive. He charges for rough boards, then mills them down to flooring and delivers much less than you paid for, It is like buying a 2 by 4 and getting charged for the whole tree. This was not disclosed until after the sale and subsequent re-order as we were short of enough to do the job. I have been a contractor for over 35 years, and never have purchased flooring and not received the quantity I ordered. I will never do business with them again. read more
