One of the only theaters with 70mm screen. While the theater seats and bathrooms are well maintained, there's not much to do after a movie is over in the area. The common area only sells food and drinks - there's no games or whatnot to go to. I'd recommend going here after work downtown or if coming for a 70mm feature but if you're looking for activities to do after watching a movie, another theater may be your best bet
The best way to see "The Odyssey" in on a true IMAX screen. Thankfully, there is one in the Bay Area and it is right in the heart of the City. Took a day off to catch this flick because weekend tickets had been sold out for weeks. Only options were weekdays. No problem as this guy was willing to burn a PTO day to see this awesome film. And it was truly awesome. One cannot truly appreciate the size and scale of a movie like this without seeing it on IMAX. This theater continues to satisfy over the years. I was a little surprised to see a fully packed house on a Thursday morning. Wow. And now for your viewing pleasure...
Date: Saturday, May 2nd, 2026 Time: 3pm Party of: 2 Movie: The Devil Wears Prada 2 *Pretzel Bites ($9.49) - salted with cheese *Movie Nacho ($10.49) *Large Drink ($8.49) x2 - Large Drink Surcharge ($0.33) x2 *Large Popcorn Tub ($11.49) *Tax ($2.34) Decided to go see a movie last min. My friend got the tix, so I'm not sure how much they were. But we did end up sitting closer to the front in the middle, so not horrible options since we didn't plan. I don't see films in theater much, so if the seat reclines and it's relatively clean, I'm totally fine. I used to see movies here a lot after work back in the 2000s / early 2010s, so much more comfy than before. Always fun to catch a flick. Parking can be done across the street and 5th and mission. Watched Nolan's Odyssey here today, though I've been going here often as a Bay Area local. Most people probably already know if researching where to watch movies, but this is one of the 45 true IMAX 70mm theaters, with 30 of those being in the US. If you value getting the full experience for your IMAX films shot in 15/70, just watch it here. No complaints.
Large AMC on the third floor. It's not really too crowded. You are able to get tickets on the first floor and then head up to the third floor to order snacks or get tickets if you wanted to speak to a person to order tickets. I watched three movies here and there was never a line for anything. It's pretty clean and the seats are clean. A great pass time with most recent movies available.
My daughter came into The City to see a movie for Easter. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to get in fine the concessions. The staff was helpful especially asking if we were a Stub member. We got one of the combos and was able to get it in a timely fashion. One thing I noticed the theater was clean and enough light to find your seat. I was surprised how clean the ladies room was which includes the stalls and counter tops. I would come back
This theater is located in the Metreon building. It's located on the 3rd floor. You can reserve seats online and the chairs are comfy loungers. The concession area is huge and there are a lot of food and drink options. The drink/slurpees and popcorn butter are self serve which I really liked. The staff was wonderful and the theater was clean and had a great sound system. We will definitely return the next time we are visiting the city.
A clean, not too large movie theater that has plenty of snack, drink, and movie options! We watched Obsession on our visit and had an amazing time. Popcorn was delicious, and there are multiple self-serve butter stations to mix to your liking.
This theater seriously needs more ushers, security or people to uphold etiquette. During my last few visits, there have almost always been people on their phone or talking during the movie. I shouldn't have to go up to them nor leave the theater to find someone who has more authority to do something. Once in a while, there is an occasional homeless person that somehow gets into an IMAX theater too. One time, a family with small children came into an R-rated movie. I knew they were clearly in the wrong theater when the dad pulled up their tickets on his phone on a very bright screen to find out where they needed to be while seated in the walkway too. They didn't finally leave until the characters in the movie started raining down F-bombs. This could be said about any theater but the lack of basic etiquette has been really prevalent here for quite some time now.
Went to see a movie this evening, love this spacious theater. The IMAX theater had so many seats it didn't feel claustrophobic even though it was an almost sold out showing. The concession stand was quick getting my beverage order. The cashier was friendly and helpful, it was a good evening at amc theater.
When it comes to big screens, epic sound, and pretty comfortable seating, it doesn't get much better than The Metreon AMC. While there are a number of sizes, from the massive top 3 in the country IMAX, to the epic Dolby theater, to a handful of 150 capacity, and then some smaller rooms, every screen at The Metreon is worth the price of admission. The laser picture quality and sound are top notch across the board and every room is immersive in its own way. We are so fortunate to have such a big centrally located cinema to showcase the mega blockbuster films alongside some smaller, smaller released Indies. My only issue with this theater, aside from the high concession prices (which is chain-wide) is the placement of the many excellent Coca Cola Freestyle machines. It feels odd to have the food and drink options before you scan your entry and makes getting a soda or popcorn refill a little more tedious than necessary.
I visited AMC Metreon 16 on Saturday to watch Nuremberg, and once again it reminded me why this is one of my favorite theaters in San Francisco. This was my second time here -- the first being when I watched Godzilla Minus One -- and the experience was just as good. The theater is very clean and spacious, without that overcrowded feeling some movie theaters have. There are always staff walking around sweeping and keeping things tidy. They also have security present, which makes the whole place feel safe and well-managed. I grabbed a hot dog, some popcorn, and a soda before the show -- everything was fresh, hot, and exactly what you expect from a good movie snack lineup. Inside the auditorium, the recliner seats are extremely comfortable. You can lean back, lift your feet, and really settle in. The screen quality is excellent, with bright colors, sharp visuals, and powerful sound that fills the room without being overwhelming. Even when other people are in the theater, you barely hear anything except the movie itself -- no disturbances, no distractions. Ticket prices are reasonable: about $15.95 for the second showing of the day. If you go earlier, it's even cheaper. The self-serve kiosks at the entrance make buying tickets and choosing seats very easy. Overall, AMC Metreon 16 is a great spot for movie fans. Clean, comfortable, safe, and high-quality from start to finish. I'll definitely be back again for future films. Two thumbs up from me.
Came here several times to watch movies. Most recently, I saw Wuthering Heights in Dolby on a Friday afternoon, and Dracula on a Saturday afternoon with friends. Chairs are very comfy. I feel it's pretty pricey, but I guess that's also because it's in the city and it's a huge city in the Yerba Buena Gardens.
I thought they improved a lot since I was a kid. This place was definitely cleaner and safer with more cops and security guards all around. We finally got tickets to the famed Odessy filmed specifically for this wide picture theater. Was it worth it? It's was just okay. Took months of getting shut down and sold out. The movie itself was 6 out of 10 stars for me. Way too long, I felt that it could have used some major editing. Nice to see this theater is still thriving. The snacks and drink bar weee super clean amd so were the restrooms! read more
Amazing theater and experience, we're lucky to have one of the few true IMAX 70mm screens in the country and world here in the Bay Area. The theater is huge and has a lot of historic details and charm. The snack bar area is particularly beautiful with large windows overlooking the area. Their IMAX theater is massive and not like usual theaters. Be careful if going inside after a movie has started as it's extra dark and there's a lot of steps and railings. It can be confusing coming here for the first time. Take the elevator to the 3rd floor of the Metreon building. Unfortunately they do not have their own parking so you should park at the Fifth and Mission / Yerba Buena garage across the street. Mobile order for food pickup was quick and easy, always love their generous chicken tenders. read more
So an update is in order here as a friend convinced me to catch a movie while it is on a particular screen here. Why? He explained the specialness of 70mm IMAX (https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q&start=48&select=D0sCdmms65IJpTy8F24HYA) and that it was available in two Bay Area theaters (other in 408, but it might actually be in Dublin). Said friend already had tickets about ten days from when we discussed this as he bought them almost two weeks earlier. Checking with another friend who is a littler older than me about The Odyssey, we both related to the story, for myself after reading the book in high school. I searched online and the link led me to a famous movie ticket selling company that starts with an F (review to come). After searching for dates and times for the screenings of this format at this theater, I noticed that almost every date had available seats only in the 1st five rows of the theater. But one Monday a couple weeks after I did a search, I saw a map that seemed to show that there were a couple seats on the last row of the theater next to several disabled access seats. I clicked them and happily told my friend. Two weeks later, I liked that my QR code was the only thing needed to enter both the venue and that particular theater. We walked in about 15 minutes before the scheduled 'lights out' for previews. As I walked to the location based on the map where I bought the tickets, I noticed that the map was inaccurate. Instead of being at the furthest row from the screen, our seats were literally the closest. I was concerned about getting dizzy especially since the movie time is 2 hrs. 45 minutes. I was glad to say that there were no physical or visual issues from this though it was difficult to appreciate the movie when I had to slump to the furthest rear portion of the seat to scan the entire screen. No qualms with the theater as the seats filled by the time the movie started 25 minutes after the screening. A nice bonus was that the director added a preview trailer (appreciated in 70 MM IMAX) of a sequel (part 3) of a popular movie (Dune, for those who are fans) coming towards the end of the year. I am still a fan of this theater though I must admit that is was trying to enjoy this movie. Surprisingly, this was not an issue. If you're a movie fan, do try to catch The Odyssey before it leaves the 70mm format screen. Trust me. read more

We recently came by to watch Avatar in IMAX 3D and while the AMC Metreon is a bit run down and grimy, it's still a good movie experience and pretty spacious. The Metreon Center is general is a little dead but it's convenient if you live in the city and has the typical concessions. It also has the most screening options and best IMAX screen if you're looking to watch a movie in 3D. read more

Very comfortable seats, clean bathrooms, and really enjoyed my movie. Glad there is still a movie theater in downtown SF. I also really like the food court here. Buckhorn Grill and the Italian place gives 10% discount with a movie ticket. read more
this can be a pricy theater but it's in a nice spot, downtown, close to bars and restaurants. you're paying for the convenience and experience. reclining chairs during the movies is a nice perk. relax a bit. youre already out to have a good time so enjoy it. concessions are typical movie theater prices. $40 just as an example, can get you a persona size pepperoni pizza (it is SMALL!), two chicken tender boxes, and a bag of peanut M&m's. read more

Watched Sinners 70 mm for the first time; while, having watched Sinners the film for the third time. Thank you AMC Metreon for being one of the few theaters to showcase the movie in 70mm, for I was not aware of its existence the first weekend I watched it. Glad this is not my regular theater since there's no recline or seat warmer. But I was there to completely analyze the movie in its originally intended medium, so I didn't mind! The reason for my review today is because I did not enjoy the distance I sat. I sat F26, which was a bit too close to the screen. I don't know why I figured F26 was a good distance. When I initially ordered my ticket, rows on rows were already filled. I thought my seat was a great deal, but my retrospection wishes I picked a further one. Maybe Row I would have been perfect. Nevertheless, my experience was still enjoyable. I love Sinners. read more

I've been going here for over 20 years since before AMC took over the Metreon. Watched a ton of free movie screenings here and have a lot of awesome movie watching experiences. The IMAX screen here is unparalleled. Especially for Sinners, no regrets. I wish I had watched Interstellar on this screen. Highly highly recommend. read more

I have been coming to this theatre for movies for many years though, it has been awhile. I remember I would always get their chicken tenders with curly fries. Their prices have steadily increase for the meal but for years it was the most delicious thing they offered at the concession stand! I came back to get their chicken tenders with waffles fries (no longer curly fries, sadly). It did not live up to what it used to be almost a decade ago. Both the chicken and waffles fries were dry. Many pieces of the fries were overly crispy, hardened to the point of burnt. Not worth the $20 price tag anymore. I remember the theatre being clean, large, with nice views of Yerba Buena. Great place to watch a movie, take a stroll at the gardens with many eateries nearby! read more

The theater seats have seen better days. They still recline though so it makes the movie experience a bit better. They still offer 1 free refill on popcorn if you order a large. They will give you a bucket of popcorn and a box which you can ask to refill now or later. I like to bring a super jumbo ziplock bag to take home leftovers. It's basically a 2 for 1 deal since between my partner and I, we can only finish 1. Their online pick up area isn't really monitored, you could basically take anyone's order.... But you shouldn't. read more
The reclining chairs are comfortable. If you join AMC stubs its definitely worth it if you like movies. Watch 3 a week, the rewards are nice for snacks or drinks. I come to this theatre pretty often. You can grab food before or after a movie inside the food court below the theatre. read more

Came here to watch the new F1 IMAX movie, and wow, what an experience! I haven't been in an actual IMAX theater in over a decade, and this location truly delivered. Unlike some places that advertise IMAX but don't have the real deal, AMC Metreon has a true IMAX screen. Massive, probably twice the size (or more) of your average movie screen. The theater itself is huge and impressive. We sat in Row D, which was a bit too close for such a large screen. Next time I'd go a few rows back at least for a better viewing angle. The seats are plush rocker chairs, which were comfortable, though I do wish they had full recliners like you find in some other newer theaters. Concessions were good but pricey. Popcorn here is definitely more expensive than Cinemark. That said, if you're an AMC Insider or A List member, you can score a free large popcorn and fountain drink upgrade, which is a nice perk. I also liked that you can control how much butter you want. They've got self serve butter and seasoning. Bonus points for the wide selection of ICEE flavors. The biggest downside is the parking. It's either garage or street parking, and I'm not sure if they offer validation. IMAX tickets were $28. Kind of pricey but worth it if it's a great movie. Bonus tip: Costco currently sells an AMC gift card of $20 and two black tickets for $40 total. Pretty good deal! Basically were able to get these tickets for $20. read more

This theater could really improve... our first time watching IMAX for the early screening Crunchyroll of Demon Slayer Infinity Castle. 9/9/2025. Second time in this cinema. As we walked inside the auditorium 16 we are amazed by how big the screen was. We got Row L seats (specifically L13 and L14) and they are eye level to the screen. No straining to the neck. Huge picture and impressive sound. But I have to complain that stairs did not include letters and people have to shout their row so people can find their right seats, and I thought that was pretty helpful. The seats were run down and some ripped... before coming, I was so hyped about this theater being the second largest true IMAX in the country second to Lincoln in NY. I hope they can improve chairs and especially finding your Row seats! so disappointing but it's worth the price, we loved the movie. read more

What types of food are available? Anything fancy?
You can download the AMC app and order ahead and see the menu. Some of the items include: curly fries, mozzarella sticks, pretzel bites, mac and cheese bites, chicken tenders to name a few.
What are the bar hours?
What's the name of the parking lot across the street and how much would 6 hours/all day parking be on Saturday and Sunday?
It's the Mission and 5th Street garage. They charge by the fraction of an hour, regardless of the day of the week. Six hours would be something like $24. All day (or a lost ticket) is $40.
How much is parking?
It's like $5 per hour after 6, more during the day. It's the 5th and mission garage.
Anyone know if there are trailers before an IMAX 2D movie at Metreon? We're bringing a toddler so time is precious for his attention span. Don't worry it's a kids movie ;)
Yes. There's 20 minutes of previews for all AMC movies. So add 20 minutes to the movie's start time.
What's changed since the renovation?
As far as I can tell, the renovation was primarily to facilitate the restructuring of the overall building. I think probably the most significant thing that comes to mind is that there is now a row of self-serve soda machines where the management…
Do they have car parking? Thanks in advance
Yes, there's the 5th Street and Mission Parking Garage across the street. You can also find plenty of street parking on the north side of Market St after 6pm.
Do they have a loading dock?
No.. oh, Yelp says this answer is too short..... so my answer is still no. No
Does the back row have the reclining chairs?
Yes they do. Every single seat has one. The only exception is the IMAX Theater.
Do folks recommend the Dolby or IMAX cinema for action films? Thanks!
They are both great for action films but there are trade-offs. Dolby has a smaller screen, clearer sound, and reclining chairs. IMAX is the biggest screen imaginable (80ft screen!) plus movies have exclusive IMAX formatted scenes, but no reclining…
