My father was a resident at Anthology of Farmington for 3 1/2 years. When my family and I searched…read morefor a place for him to live, we looked for a place where he would be safe as well as somewhere that was warm and welcoming. We liked Anthology for these reasons and felt that it would be a good place for him to live and call his home. My dad seemed reasonably happy at Anthology, and he enjoyed being involved in some of the daily activities. As family members, we particularly liked the front desk staff, who were always very friendly and helpful. However, we did have some issues along the way. Communication was difficult as we often had difficulty getting in contact with the right people or having our calls returned. We also had issues with his bracelet occasionally not working, especially when he fell and the emergency button didn't work. Staff members throughout the facility changed many times, and there always seemed to be a shortage of employees. The biggest issue came when there was an incident at a local restaurant with my dad and he ended up in the ICU for 8 days and passed away. I called Anthology the day of the incident to let them know that he was in the hospital and wouldn't be returning that evening. One of the nurses from Anthology called the day after to find out what happened. Besides the initial call the day after the incident, not one person from Anthology called us during that whole 8 day period to see how he was doing. After he passed away, no one from Anthology called or sent a card to express their condolences. I want to specifically point out our disappointment with the Executive Director at that time. When I talked to her about our disappointment with Anthology, she couldn't have been more insensitive, and she showed no empathy whatsoever. Instead, she just focused on eating her lunch in front of me at her desk. She commented on how maybe they didn't realize how bad my dad was or how someone should have called, but honestly, she should have been the one to call. She was the Executive Director, and our family communicated with her on multiple occasions. She knew my dad well. He talked about her often and always referred to her as his friend. The restaurant where the incident happened called several times, the local police department called several times, but we heard nothing from the place where he lived and called his home for 3 & 1/2 years. We learned from this incident that Anthology of Farmington is really not a place to call home but instead is just a business that does not care for its residents. It is a place where elderly people live, they pass away, and their apartment is then filled with someone new. Residents are just a number there. Anthology needs to realize that the people living there are real people, with real families and real emotions. We thought that our dad was living in that warm and welcoming place we had hoped for but Anthology proved to us that this was not the case. Also, beware of the reviews on their website as they are cherry picked.

He spent the last week of his life here and was treated with dignity, care, and respect. I noticed that the hospital staff (or volunteers) had crochet butterflies with a short prayer attached to them. The butterflies were placed on his pillow and chest. He looked peaceful. The receptionist at the front desk was sweet and pleasant. She took a photo of all visitors for the temporary badge. The hospice is located in a very peaceful setting, overlooking Long Island Sound. This was actually America's first hospice. The interior was a bit outdated, but the outside view was beautiful and serene. Rest In Peace, David Kniess.

Out of the 3 months, the Aide was here 10 times. When questioned, I was told there was a problem. My parent had no Aide for the entire month of September. When she became in-patient, giving me Respite, I was contacted 3 days in a row. I was asked questions on how to handle my parent. Isn't this Hospice? Shouldn't they know how to handle a dementia patient???? The nurse schedule changes, no consistency. I'm so disappointed in the non-services of CT Hospice.

Probably once a state of the art senior & rehab facility back in the 1960's & 70's, this is truly not the case in the present day. My entire family was appalled at the crumbling conditions, under trained "professional caregivers," and many potential health and safety violations. We recently had no other options discharging elderly family member from the hospital. Resulting in two agonizing days & nights not only for our loved one, but the family as whole. We scrambled desperately to locate a qualified, up-to-date post operative facility. Every experience at Hughes left them with low marks of 1 or 2 on a scale of 1-10. The Registered nursing staff is virtually understaffed and over worked. Which leaves much of the "care" to under qualified CNA's to basically run the roost. Not one was hospitable or caring. For example, our family member was left on an uncomfortable bed pan for over an hour, despite numerous attempts to call the staff. To mitigate the issue, we requested a bedside commode. However, the call light wasn't answered again for a good twenty minutes. So our family member made her way precariously to the commode. Then to add insult, when we came in the next day to transfer her another facility, the Commode was still un-emptied 24+ hours later! The rooms are small and under designed for 1 patient, let alone 2, which made both residents very uncomfortable. An old window mounted air conditioning unit struggled to cool the tight space. Halls are narrow and a parking lot for various items, such as, dining carts, pressure cuff carts, beds, wheel chairs, house keeping items (some very filled with soiled bedding). This clutter generates chaos and unsafe conditions for unstable residents needing the use of a handrail. I could go on, but enough said. She was transferred to a 5 star facility that honestly is a DAYdream versus the NIGHTmare. Please do not even consider this facility and subject any loved to Hughes under any circumstances. My heart goes out to all of the remaining patients and residents who have no other means to move on.
