Id really rather give 3 1/2 stars. This is a little diner, typical southern country meals, but the prices are not diner prices. I paid $45 ($5 tip) for my breakfast of 2 eggs, chicken fried steak and gravy, 1 biscuit and coffee and home fries. My daughter has country ham, 2 eggs, 2 biscuits, home fries, gravy and coffee. Home fries were not great, dry, possibly frozen not fresh. But the rest of the food was good, my eggs were cooked perfectly, the chicken fried steak was great and biscuits were large and fluffy. They serve their ketchup in a tiny plastic ramekin with a lid, it was gross and had a layer of liquid on top that was hard to get over. My wife and I recently went to The Amber Restaurant. It was quite possibly one of the most underwhelming and disappointing dining experiences I have had in a long time. To begin with, the food is terribly over priced and not even prepared very well. The hashbrowns and home fries were cold when we got our plates even though the place was not even close to being busy. The country ham was also almost paper thin and more bone and fat than anything else. We both had two eggs, 1 biscuit and gravy (that's included, not extra) home fries or hash browns and country ham along with her a coffee and me a coke. They charged us $40 for this pitiful meal and after examining the menu prices, I informed the waitress that they actually overcharged us. Her response was "they may have changed the prices but didn't update the menu". The menu that they print out on a laser printer and put in a plastic sleeve. She wound up checking my total and then gave me a 10% discount on the bill which was still more than what should have been charged based upon the menu prices. Bad food and bad prices. No thanks. I would rather go to waffle house or cracker barrel and get better food for a cheaper price. read more

I brought my mom here to try it when she came into town. Unfortunately, this was by far the worst breakfast experience either of us have had. The place was very old which made me wonder how old (dirty) the kitchen is. Our server was impersonal, bordering on rude. The coffee was tasteless, more like hot water for as much flavor as it had. We had a long 30 min wait for egg sandwiches which the bread was barley toasted. And to top it off, my hash browns were undercooked and still hard in the middle. Visited for the first time today. Really surprised! Delicious authentic country style steak that seemed 100% scratch made - tender, real & delicious. Highly recommend. Sides were good, too, with the exception of the mac & cheese that seemed to lean on the addition of mustard for color and flavor more than actual cheese (boo) but, no worry, I will just get a different side next time. I was invited to go here for a birthday lunch with friends. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised with what I encountered. The staff was so friendly and welcoming as we walked in and we were completely cared for the entire time. I ordered the liver and onions because it is one of my favorite meals. I was happy with my meal. It was an old school diner with country food. Amazing selection. The menu was so large that I could not decide what I wanted. I decided on a chopped beef steak with coleslaw and cornbread dressing. It was good. I love coleslaw and they had onion in theirs and that's the first time I had ever encountered that. My dining partner had breakfast. I definitely will go again, and I actually look forward to it because there are several items that I would like to try and I could not really make up my mind. Places like this And Alice's are hard to find and a dying breed! But they always seem to be good. Although the food was just OK, I would try it one time. We went to get breakfast here on Sunday morning July 30, 2023 and our waitress was the manager Becky. My fiancé got corned beef hash, 2 eggs over medium and wheat toast and I had the country fried steak, scrambled eggs, home fries and biscuit and gravy. The corned beef hash was cold and greasy and the eggs were cold. So instead of offering to fix it or get him something else they got mad. So he didn't get to eat. As for mine, the eggs were cold and they gave me my biscuit but no gravy. So we will never go back to this place to eat. Hopefully the cook will cook better for the other customers. I am struggling to understand the other reviewer's definition of expensive. Amber is a classic East TN country restaurant. Breakfast is absolutely the way to go; biscuits and gravy are spot on. Portions are average and adequate - plenty. The prices at breakfast especially are great. I like to order a side of tomatoes when Graingers are in season. Their pancakes and country ham are also tasty. Lunch consists of typical sandwiches and blue plates. I'd guess the vegetables are probably canned; a BLT or special is more the way to go. All in all a good breakfast spot if you're in or around Halls or Fountain City. Think Rankin-esque. read more

I was really excited to find that this hole in the wall restaurant (my favorite kind) existed in my area. I stopped in to order breakfast. Nothing fancy, just eggs, bacon, hash browns and black coffee. A half hour after ordering and watching many plates pass me to be delivered to other tables, I politely inquired to make sure my order was placed as I had to work soon. I was told "yes, it's just that all these people came in at once." I was aware of this as I had a front row seat immediately in front of the door where I was blasted with cold air as I watched each and every one of them come in after I had ordered. I've also waited tables for many years so I understand that the looks of a dining room can be deceiving where the wait for food is concerned. However, after two full cups of coffee, at the 45 minute point of waiting for a plate of eggs, I watched a table of 3 that walked in 15 minutes after I ordered head to the register, with toothpicks in their mouths, to pay. It was at this point that I got up and left. I was so happy to have found a good breakfast joint. Instead, thanks for the coffee, I guess?? The Amber is a wonderful locally owned restaurant with a great breakfast and good home cooking for lunch. I enjoy their meat & 2 veggie lunch choices. My boyfriend wanted to take me to Amber Restaurant after finding out they had pierogies (my favorite) , from online and calling the restaurant. Sadly, there were no pierogies on the menu, and when asked about them are server didn't even know what they were. Wah Wah. The restaurant seemed to be an over 60 hang out and the menu reflected that. Mostly Sandwiches, breakfast ( wish I would of tried), and meat/vegetable plates. My boyfriend had a fried bologna sandwich which he said was really good. I asked are sweet server, who was probably 70, which was better the fried flounder or the hot turkey sandwich. She said the fried fish was her favorite. I ordered the fish with their home made pimento cheese. When the fish came out, I kid you not, It was in the shape of large triangle haha. Exactly like your high school cafeteria lunch. My phone died right after I got my food, which came about five minutes after the boyfriend's , so I wasn't able to catch a picture of my triangle fish. While it was off putting, I still ate it because I was starving. It was underwhelming and obviously came from a large freezer bag in the back. They do not take credit cards. The ATM charges $2.25. The service is good and the bacon is thick.

Great food but a couple things you should know ahead of time,bring cash (no checks ,or credit/debit cards are accepted ) and there are no real descriptions or photos of the food on the menu. I ordered a hot roast beef sandwich not knowing that "hot roast beef" = gravy... tOns of gravy... layered between the bread and (1 thin slice of) roast beef then gobbed on top until you can't see the sandwich for the gravy. (The gravy was also gobbed onto my fries...)It goes without saying that the bread was so soggy the only way to eat it would have been with a spoon. The waitress was rude when I explained my dissapointment & requested a new order (not a replacement, I wasn't trying to stiff them...) then argued with me as to whether the menu mentioned gravy , it did not. She did,howvere, apologize when she realized she was mistaken. Eventually my order was replaced with an excellent cheeseburger. Overall ,the food is great, just don't expect the menu to reflect what you're ordering. read more
