Studio X: The Art of Hair is a pleasant, unassuming salon in a strip mall on Route 101A in Amherst,…read moreNH. The salon itself is very comfortable with ample waiting room chairs (not that I've ever waited more than a few minutes), and complimentary beverages. The cleanliness and quality of the business is top notch. Highly recommended. Be sure to call to make an appointment first.

My standard MO is to grow my hair out long, and then cut it super short (I'm talking chin-length). The problem is, I've struggled to find stylists who are willing to take me as short as I tell them I want to go. I've had to tell many stylists to keep going shorter, millimeter by millimeter, until I'm tired of sitting in the chair and just say it's fine. I've also had many stylists who either haven't listened or haven't been able to capture the style I want (a shaggy pageboy/bixie, NOT a blunt bob!). Cassandra was the first stylist I've had in YEARS who got it. We spent the first 15 or so minutes of my appointment on a consultation - not just me showing her photos of styles, but her asking specifically what my hair care routine is/how much time I want to spend styling, how I want it to grow out, etc. Then she took the time to bring the style to life - consulting me as she went to make sure it's where I wanted to go, and going back over places she felt needed more work. She was super focused, but also chill, funny, and easy to chat with for the hour appointment. It's been years since I felt like I haven't had to "settle" for a haircut. I will definitely be going back to Cassandra. Bonus points to the salon for just having a nice atmosphere overall.

I met Connie on a whim on a Sunday morning almost a year ago. I booked online for a haircut and…read morewhen I went in to see her we talked a bit about my hair type how I typically style it and the struggles that I feel like I had been having. she asked me if I would consider having a perm. I thought she was crazy. We talked a bit more and I was feeling a bit adventurous and I just felt like I could trust her so I said sure let's go for it. I could tell she knew what she was doing as I was recalling my perm days of the late 80's...I have a sensitive scalp and I had no issues with the application of the products and there was no harsh odors. I was comfortable the entire time. My hair came out so great. I received so many compliments on my hair and no one believed it was a perm because it looked so natural. The perm lasted me a good 6-7 months and then I went back to Connie again in Septemeber for my second perm. I will continue to return to her and will recommend her to everyone who asks me "who does your hair!" Thanks Connie and I'm so sorry that it has taken me so long to write this. I look forward to seeing you again in the spring.

I don't usually leave negative reviews--I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt. However,…read morethis experience was so dangerous and inappropriate that I felt compelled to share. I have over 15 years of experience dyeing and bleaching my own hair, often using a 30 volume bleach, so I'm very familiar with the process and what is normal. I've also been to multiple other salons in the past for bleaching and coloring without any issues. The stylist used a "highlighter bleach" that caused an intense stinging and burning unlike anything I've ever experienced before. She washed the bleach out with scalding hot water directly on my scalp--something I know is unsafe--and placed a towel over my face during the rinse that she wouldn't let me move. She repeatedly wiped bleach off my face with her gloved hands but made no effort to divert the bleach water away from my ears, allowing it to run into them--I could hear crackling. During this largely silent wash, she suddenly commented that hair oxidizes in the sun and recommended wearing hats. This felt like a subtle nod to an awareness of the damage she was causing, especially the hole in my hair, rather than casual advice, since we hadn't spoken otherwise. Almost every step deviated from proper technique. I have long hair from my temples up, with a brunette undercut below that I specifically asked to leave alone. Despite this, she left bleach on my undercut in uneven patches, freehanding bleach beneath the shave line. She also applied toner only to roots and missed yellow patches, and aggressively brushed and blow-dried my scalp, causing pain that lasted days. A second stylist confirmed I had a painful friction burn and an actual hole in my hair. She never fully neutralized the blue tone I started with or corrected my roots as promised. When I requested a refund, I waited days to schedule it and received no apology--only awkward silence and superficial compliments.
