Alyan's is a great casual and affordable spot dot for middle eastern food. The inside is cozy, and I appreciated the glass pane in the ceiling of the back area because it provided nice lighting. Service was good - our order was taken quickly and our food came out pretty quickly too. We got a big jug of mint iced tea that smelled and tasted lovely. The fries and onions were delicious. I also enjoyed the combo platter - it was my first time baba ghannouj, which was great. The spinach and mushroom was a little bland, but I liked everything else on the plate. I'll be back to try the falafel, shawarma, and kebabs. I didn't realize the portion sizes would be so size. I had a lot of leftovers. We were a party of two; just the fries and combo platter would've been plenty of food for us, but I'm glad I got to take stuff home.

Casual BYOB spot right off of South Street with fresh, tasty platters and appetizers. No frills interior but back patio is really charming. The service is quick and friendly. I love their falafel, but definitely grab an app and some tea too! Prices are a major deal for the amount and quality of the food! Great for relaxed group dinners (thought it's not a huge spot) and dates.

Alyan's is a low-key, affordable spot that serves atmosphere and delicious food! My boyfriend and I ordered the chicken shawarma sandwich and grilled zucchini platter. The grilled zucchini platter is definitely a stand-out dish. It came out perfectly grilled with fresh warm, slightly crispy pita bread and flavorful hummus. The service here is also very warm and friendly. I'd highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for some comforting Mediterranean food.

Came for the falafel and left trying everything. Nestled right on South Street, Alyan's is serving up some great middle eastern food. The back patio offers a ton of great ambiance for larger groups. Everything was pretty good I must say. I eat a lot off middle eastern food. Alyan's is tasty and affordable. We ordered ton of appetizers and platters. The fries are delicious. Well seasoned with onions and peppers. Falafel was super unique. Thoroughly enjoyed. Great spot you should try.

amazing all around! The food was delicious and the back patio is adorable- we will definitely be back! Also we loved our server he was incredibly kind

Food is incredible and authentic. The staff is incredibly kind and the prices are extremely reasonable. The outdoor area is a great vibe for a sit down lunch/dinner, and the restaurant is byob. Highly recommend.

I had to give this place a one star which should've been zero stars but I had give something just to write this. We ordered takeout and the food was cold, disgusting and old like they refried it. We spent a lot of money at this establishment. Not only were the staff of two people (the cook and cashier) not friendly and cold, they sold us old food and I believe it's because we didn't leave a tip after the 4% credit card charge. They make us pay before the food is prepared, which I believe sets the climate for the type of service the customer receives. I also believe it's because we're black, as a white customer came in and was greeted with warmth and kindness. I want my money and my time back! We ordered: Falafel Sandwich Shawarma

Ask the Community - Alyan's Restaurant

Would there be room for a party of 8-10, and is there some meze / sharing plates option for such a group? Bringing a group that includes mostly people with no exposure to Middle Eastern food, so giving them the option to sample is ideal.

There's a small back room that could fit 8-10. This could be fun. I would call.

Best Thing I Ever Ate: Hummus, Lamb Shoulder…read more This was my second visit to Zahav while visiting Philadelphia. I'm glad I had visited before because I knew the importance of pacing myself. I knew I could only enjoy a little knibble of each of the delicious salads that were initial placed on the table. I think I ate all the twice-cooked eggplant. It was so good! The hummus is honestly the best I've ever had, and the laffa bread is such a yummy accompaniment. I had to stop myself from eating too much! I tried the Phyllo-wrapped Haloumi. It was ok, but I liked my dad's Freekeh Arancini better. The Pomegranate Lamb Shoulder is the reason I had to pace myself. This is also one of my favorite lamb dishes that I've ever had. The greens are a nice accomaniment. I didn't care for the crispy rice, and it was the only thing I didn't like. I got the Pecan Konafe for dessert and it was like an exotic pecan pie. Love this! The honey ice cream was so refreshing after a big meal. I left very happy.

I cannot think of a single way Zahav could have been a better culinary experience. I came to know…read moreabout this restaurant through Eater's "Mise En Place" video series on YouTube and was struck by the care and contemplation put into each dish. The second I knew I was visiting Philly, I set a reminder on my phone to vie for a reservation. We got a 9:30pm reservation, which was late for my usual dining habits but absolutely no question worth the extra few hours to build up and appetite and anticipate going to such a renowned restaurant. We were met with a beautiful dining room and kind, passionate people at Zahav, especially our bartenders, who made our experience a true EVENT, describing each dish to us even as we were making decisions on the tasting menu, and vouching for the fact that we MUST try the halloumi, which ended up being my favorite dish! Wow, the care that is put into the craft of this food is unreal. Zahav is a true celebration of cuisine. We started with the laffa bread being served straight out of the fire with accompaniments which were absolute flavor bombs, especially the eggplant and pickled cabbage. The bread was warm, soft, and so flavorful in itself but made even better by the hummus-tehina, which was perhaps the smoothest I've ever had. The Pomegranate Lamb Shoulder fell right off the bone, and the Amba-braised Greens and Crispy Persian Rice were side dishes that felt like main events in themselves -- the crispiness of the rice perfectly complemented the pomegranate sauce of the lamb. This was the perfect celebration dinner, and Zahav quickly made it to the top of my list of places that live up to their hype and go above and beyond in the kindness realm.

FANTASTIC experience -- just go!…read more The Lamb Fahsah was hearty and flavorful, served in a hot metal bowl with just the right proportions of shredded meat, veggies, and broth. Plus it came with FRESH pita bread HOT out of the oven -- slightly crisp outside, hot gooey inside. (Honestly, I think their pita texture and flavor surpassed a certain high-end Lebanese restaurant in Fishtown...) Decor is a tasteful modern pastiche of traditional middle eastern motifs. Overall vibe is relaxed, clean, and spacious. The only downside was having to pick just one thing from the menu, though staff were happy to help. One note: I think they're still getting off the ground, and I stood next to the "wait to be seated" sign for 5 minutes before getting frustrated and walking up to the bar guy. He was SUPER apologetic, as was my waiter, and they made it up to me with a free cup of chai tea -- plus a free refill at the end! During my wife's and my time there, they never had an empty table that wasn't being quickly cleared for a waiting party, and we heard people assigned considerable waits when they tried to walk in. I give the benefit of the doubt that the hectic, holiday-adjacent nature of the day we went in contributed to us not receiving mugs for the tea pot we ordered or some of the longer waits between waitstaff visits. But the food and atmosphere? Through the roof. We were fortunate enough to have scored the coveted front window seating section, a luxuriously spacious and cushioned special seating option that only one party at a time can enjoy (all other seats are traditional chair-and-table arrangements), so we were especially high on the subject of atmosphere, but even had we not secured the ideal seating, I would have enjoyed the chill, evocative music coming from the restaurant's speakers. The food was the main event, of course, and it delivered. We started simple, with a hummus app. The humus was great and the flatbread really stood out - ideal density, great, light crispness to the outside, soft but at no risk of being too chewy or doughy on the inside. I ordered the salmon dish, which arrived in a big, black sizzling iron bowl. The salmon and tender little potato chunks were in a shakshuka-like red sauce and paired excellently with the plate of rice, fresh raisins, garlic slivers, and carrot bits that accompanied it. I honestly don't love raisins, but this was clearly a "have faith in the recipe" situation and I really enjoyed when they would assert themselves a bit against the sauce. My wife ordered a falafel salad platter, which she was kind enough to let me try; best falafel I've eaten in a good number of years, and she agreed (which means even more than my endorsement, since she falafel much more frequently than I do). I've eagerly recommended Malooga to friends and associates since and can't wait to get back and order some lamb!
