My son enrolled in the middle of his sophomore year, and it has been an absolute game changer. I…read moredon't know how Army and Navy Academy (ANA) does it, but within two months they transformed him from a teenager influenced by "red pill" voices insisting school was pointless--and that stealing, dealing, and hustling were the keys to success--into a respectful, motivated, disciplined young man who communicates openly and reaches out for support when he needs it. Before ANA, we spent 18 months trying everything: DBT therapy, family systems therapy, private boys coaching, and multiple specialized retreats for struggling teens. None of it helped. In fact, many interventions pushed him even farther away from his best self. ANA, on the other hand, grounded him almost immediately. Now he's on the Dean's List, was voted Best Artist, and loves attending ANA. The other day, I nearly cried when I heard him tell his grandmother, "It's a privilege to attend ANA." His commanding officer captured the essence of the school after a minor infraction: "We are not a reform school. We are not a therapeutic boarding school. We are an elite preparatory academy developing the future leaders of the world. You decide if you belong here." And somehow, through the teachers, counselors, structure, activities, and community, my son decided for himself that he does belong there. ANA gave my son his future back. We are grateful beyond words.

Where do I start...Hmmm, my 4 years at good ol' CHS...well before I jump in on that, let me first…read moresay that I have been a high school teacher and administrator in north SD County for 27 years, 9 of which were actually at Carlsbad. My point is I hear a lot of non Carlsbad kids, (grads and current students) state "I hate my school", for a variety of reasons. I have NEVER heard 1 kid, during my time as a student or during the 9 years I was the AD, teacher and Head Baseball Coach, say that about Carlsbad. Not one! I'm not saying those kids aren't out there but all things considered, CHS is a great school. Unless maybe you are a female? I have heard from some students there are a lot of "Mean Girls" there who pick on girls who don't look the CHS way. I don't really know anything about that since I didn't have to concern myself with all that. My focus as a student was being friendly to all the ladies! Besides that, you've got waves just a mile or 2 from a gorgeous campus that was completely remodeled in 2011 (I was there). This is why you have the Nation's top competition Surf Team in addition to a premier athletic program and Californias top rated student fan section. Academics are top notch as well as graduates typically are accepted to the nations premier universities. They have a robust AP program as well. The one area that, for me, is a slight "knock" is the student body demographics which is quite homogenous. Maybe that is a plus win in your book? maybe not...regardless of race/ethnicity, the socioeconomic status of 80% of the families, is high many, quite high!

Many of these kids do not want to learn. The party culture and misbehaviors affect the school to…read morenot value education. The student body is segregated between the majority of whites and hispanics, interacting within their own friend groups. Lack of diversity in the student body. I had a mentor teacher Marissa Considine who was the worst mentor. She never had a student teacher before and wanted to abuse my free labor to her advantage, not contributing to my growth. She affected me psychologically, emotionally, and gave up on me. She wasn't a significant teacher gearing her students toward a mature development. I don't find this school to be the best choice to value education. The good things about this school is extracurriculars, especially sports.

In this school they ask my pronouns I'm not in to that gay stuff. I wrote man and got points off, I'm not happy with that. I am leader of the football team like generations of my family has been. I have had many bad stories of the locker room. But this is the worst I walk in after hard practice sweaty and smelly. I was not ok with this as my girlfriend likes me smelling like an alpha male (I am one) I walk it to the showers witch are always full of naked men. I walk over to one of the showers in the corner to see two men making out. I throw up in my mouth and spit it out after closing the stall door. I go over to one of the sinks and wash out the room. I go over to the janitors closet and pull out bleach pouring it in my eyes and mouth. I walk back to one of the stalls and open the door. What stood behind that door roped the ungodly sin I had seen just before... A big pile of shit was scatter all around but mostly by the drain. It looked like someone tried shoving it down. I turned to leave. I walked to my locker excepting that I was not going to have a shower. I put on my pants leaving my shirt and began leaving when I saw one of the cheerleaders (they let boys and girls on the team) He was walking In to the locker and headed over to one of the many lockers. I stayed behind to watch him change. He pulled off his shirt I saw his pale frail body. I couldn't pull my eyes off his body. The way his hair laid just above his eyes. I felt myself drawn to him. I walked over to him. I was painful obviously towering over him. He looked at me before looking down at my chest. I grabbed his chin pulling his head up to we were face to face. You look so beautiful. I lend in for a kiss which he reciprocated we locked lips and only pulled away when we were out of breath. I pushed him against the locker and we were hard making out. We stopped after 10 minutes when the bell rang Signaling that school had ended. I invited him to lunch at the nearby habitat and we went. I ditched my girlfriend and broke up with her over text that night. Me and my boyfriend have been together for 3 months and love each other a lot.

The parking lot at this school is a complete and utter disaster and an accident waiting to happen…read more Parents are cutting each other off and letting their kids out into the parking lot traffic. You see cars speeding and weaving between cars making their way to the middle school. The Vice Principal stands in the middle of the two parking lots (the middle school and elementary parking lots are connected) watching as kids run across in front of cars and hop out of cars where there is a sign saying 'NO DROP-OFF'. A few times you might see him shake his head when viewing these things, but if you think he's going to do more than that you are very mistaken. No emails or letters home about this school's concern for the students' safety and wellbeing regarding their parking lot situation. On a side note, most of my child's 6th grade teachers are very friendly and helpful.

The Middle School years (or…read moreJunior High as we called it back in the day) were some of the darkest days of my entire life. Then again, the school we attended permitted unbelievable amounts of bullying. Aviara Oaks has been wonderful for our kids. The principal, Dr. Brockett, is a decent man. He's bright, fair and very much involved with the kids and staff. I appreciate the staff of this school. Our kids have never had the "I'm dreading Monday" issues that my husband and I both had at their age. Aviara Oaks Middle School serves grades 6-8 and if considered to be a Gold Ribbon School by the state of California. This school is located directly next door to Aviara Oaks Elementary School and within walking distance of Dove Library. Good to know in case you'd like to let your older kids walk up that way after school for Library time and pick up. This brings me to the one downside of both these great schools---the steep incline to leave their parking areas. We were driving a stick shift and finally realized that not everyone knows to leave a margin of space behind a standard car for roll back on a steep incline. Our car actually rolled into the front end of one waiting right up against our backside. Now we just pick the kids up from the street at the top of the hill on days I'm driving the Diesel. Overall----an exceptional school.

Ultimately, we were referred to Carlsbad Country Day School by an acquaintance--and we are so grateful we followed that recommendation. From the moment we toured the school, we were impressed. The staff is incredibly warm and welcoming, the campus is clean and beautiful, and the overall atmosphere is calm, joyful, and thoughtfully run. The curriculum is fantastic--our kids enjoy yoga, sports, reading class, and so much more. The school also provides healthy and delicious meals daily, which has been a huge relief for us as busy parents. Even better? The kids love the food! As for their teachers--Mrs. Gina and Ms. Stephanie are absolutely wonderful. You can tell they truly care about their students and pour so much effort into making each day special. Mrs. Gina creates such a positive and engaging learning environment for our older child, and Ms. Stephanie brings so much warmth, fun, and care to our younger child's classroom. We feel so lucky they have these amazing educators in their lives. Our kids are genuinely excited to go to school each day. One of them won't even say goodbye at drop-off, and at pickup, it's like pulling teeth to get them to leave--honestly, we take that as a great sign! The outdoor space is spacious and full of activities to keep them busy and happy. The school also hosts adorable events throughout the year--like a mother/son dance, a Christmas party, and more--which really make families feel connected. They also offer professional school photos twice a year, and the sibling pictures are to die for--some of the cutest we've ever had taken. We truly feel like we won the lottery finding Carlsbad Country Day School. Our only wish is that they went through elementary school too!
