We had a really great expedited here. We had the cheese and the sausage plate to start. Fed 5 people quite well. Cheese was very fresh we were delighted. Had the veal snitzel, pork knuckle, and veal steak. The veal steak was by far the best of the three. Pork knuckle was surprisingly delicious.

I wasn't really all that particularly thrilled with this restaurant. It had a nice charm about it, but in the end there wasn't all that much on the menu that I found all that appealed. Okay, they did have ostrich, which I ended up having, and that, I have to admit, was rather interesting. However, while the restaurant did have a more traditional feel about it, I found that the food wasn't really to my taste, and somewhat expensive as well. In the end, I really only came here because of the name, and also that it felt like a traditional German pub, which as it turned out it wasn't. Still the ostrich was interesting.

We loved this place. Nice little patio. English menus. Very friendly staff. Very clean bathrooms. We had the schnitzel and the brats. Try them both - both were awesome. One of us also had the stroganoff. That too was good. Was in rice vs. noodles which I'm not sure is more traditional or not. The gravy on it was amazing! There was a member of the group that went to the bathroom and while on the way noticed that out waitress had dipped her finger into some pre made sauce in the kitchen (you can see into it) and then licked her finger. That's pretty gross - but we'd already finished eating. Despite that little comment - worth a try!

Pork Knuckles (Schweinshaxe) Altstadt Restaurant, Dusseldorf

One of the best restaurant in the Altstadt. Their food is amazing and they even have an English menu YAY. They usually have long lines but it is defiantly worth the wait. Their open flam roasted Pork Knuckles (Schweinshaxe) are simply amazing, crispy on the out side and tender on the inside with a couple of pints of their amazing dark beer; the infamous Altbier (simply called Alt). and it is a divine experience. Their Goulash soup is very hearty and worming on a cold night. Their Düsseldorf Senfrostbraten (a steak cooked with mustered and topped with cheese) is not my favorite dish but just had to try it since it is the dish Dusseldorf is famous for. I highly recommend this place waiters can seem unfriendly at first but once they know you they are awesome by my third time there they gave us free shots of Killepitsch...Guten Appetit

Very average if not basic food with average price for meat meals of 25EUR. Poor value for money.

It's located in the heart of the Altstadt (Old Town) and its decor reflects its glorious and long past. Over the years, it has become more and more touristic but it's also still a place loved by many locals. They serve a lot of local beers, in particular the bitter, dark Alt which is typical from this area. Their menu offers a lot of dishes from the regional German cuisine including the renowned Rheinischer Sauerbraten (roast beef), Mettfleish (raw pork) and a lot of various wurst (sausages). The service is fast and prices are fair. It can get quite packed so it's always good to book well in advance.

The weather was a bit dreary so everyone was sitting inside for once. Our server spoke perfect English but he was a bit rough around the edges. This was the only restaurant we went to where English was already on the menu. The menu consisted of starters & soups, house specialties, fish and dessert. There also was a seasonal sheet and a few daily specials including a business set menu (€15,50). - Alsterwasser (€3,20 for 0.30L) - light beer with lemonade. This was a mix of pilsner with a splash of lemonade. - Himmel & ähd (€12,50) - blutwurst (fried black pudding), mashed potatoes, fried onions and stewed apples. Not sure why but their fried onions don't come hot nor crispy. The blutwurst was interesting; lightly crisped and the filling was tasty. Mashed potatoes were buttery. - Metzgers leibgericht (€14,50) - three sausages (mettwurst, thüringer art bratwurst and krakauer) with sauerkraut and homemade mashed potatoes. Mettwurst was a thicker, meatier, minced pork sausage. Krakauer (similar to a a Polish kielbasa) was slightly salty but had a good bite. Bratwurst was our favourite of the bunch; easily the tastiest and most flavourful. Sauerkraut was hot and well balanced in acidity. Mashed potatoes were the same (wish they would let you choose other sides to try). An enjoyable last German meal (and for once, not too heavy). 3.5 stars.
