We love the Altria! We are former season tickets holders who have attended many events here from the Richmond Forum to musicals to concerts. The views are great in all sections and we tend to select balcony for the price point. Their online ticket sales indicate "limited leg room" for high balcony seats, but I will say all balcony seats are difficult for people over 5'6" or for people with larger hips. I was disappointed that the last show started 15 minutes late, particularly since it was on a weeknight, which is the reason for a 4 instead of 5 star review. However, definitely check out The Wiz if you can see it while traveling. read more

Absolutely beautiful and very ornate. This theater is dripping with amazing architectural details. The theater itself is almost 100 years old. The ceiling is absolutely beautiful and so are the many special touches throughout. As a venue I personally love it because it's on the smaller side so any seat you choose still won't be too far from the stage. The park garage is directly across the street which isn't too bad especially for Richmond. We did have to deal with some rain so it was slightly inconvenient, but we managed .The acoustics are great and I will definitely go to more concerts at this venue. They did have a small bar offering mixed drinks . Of course the drinks were not reasonably priced which is to be expected at a concert venue. I highly recommend, especially if you appreciate architecture and ordinate details and smaller venues. read more

I had so much fun watching Le Mis at the Altria Theater! They have a small selection of food and drinks so would recommend going out to dinner beforehand or getting food afterwards. During the intermission, there were a lot of people standing in front of my seats which wasn't the best for me to get in and out. Security is a little unorganized, but they're pretty quick. read more

Altria Theater was the perfect spot for Jeezy with the orchestra. Easy to get to, smooth entry, and parking right across the street for under ten bucks (DC could never). The vibe inside was electric! The theater is beautiful. I would live to just have the opportunity to tour the place. The architecture and the mosaics are stunning. The staff were all polite. Here are the issues. - The mezzanine seating is just awful if you aren't in the front row. The seating is obviously not original so when it was redesigned they didn't offset the seats and there isn't enough rake to see past anyone sitting in front of you. - The surrounding neighborhood is, to say the least, questionable. Walking more then a block in any direction is not advisable. Acoustics were fine and the show was itself were fine. read more

Took a little time to visit the Altria theater to see a Broadway in Richmond production. It had been a while since I've been here and they made some wonderful changes. They have a system where you go through the metal detectors, but you are quickly able to scan your ticket in and you're able to go into your relative Theatre space with ease. I was elated that each of the levels had concession stands with people who were friendly and always happy to help. They have popcorn that was made fresh as well as beverages that were cold and refreshing. They have lots of different candy options for those who have a sweet tooth while enjoying the shows. I really enjoyed the ushers because they made the experience seamless as well as provided excellent directions to the relevant areas. I've seen how the ushers were able to assist individuals with disabilities so that they feel like they were a part of the show. They were welcome and did not feel like a burden to the establishment. What I love: The Altria is a beautiful theater with gorgeous details. I am always in awe when I step in. It is also located pretty close to parking which is a big plus for me. I have now seen two shows at the Altria, Beetlejuice the musical and now Book of Mormon from their Broadway in Richmond Series. I will say, I love that we have access to such rich entertainment here in Richmond. The staff is really amenable and helpful. The shows have all been amazing with great actors and they often have interesting promo codes for tickets. What I am not a fan of: Echoing other reviewers, it is not a very comfortable venue. You are bound to be sharing (or let's face it fighting) a stranger for the arm rest and touching knees with someone else. I have only ever sat in the orchestra both times I have gone, once in Orchestra D and then in Orchestra C in the front row. I mention this to express that even the pricier seats are smaller than what one would expect. I did not find the leg room to be restrictive but I did find myself feeling very close to my seat mates and vice versa. Food: The Altria has a decent drink selection and offer some snacks such as candy and popcorn. It is quite pricy as one would expect from a theater but you are unable to bring any food or drink in. Not even water, which I understood and begrudgingly threw away my full bottle to purchase a new 5 dollar bottle from concessions. Rating: Overall, I'd recommend the Altria if a show peaks your interest. I truly think the quality and variety of shows that they put on are worth the price and the uncomfortability. Just be prepared to pray for intermission so you can stretch. 4/5 read more

Came here to see the Final Fantasy VII rebirth concert. Venue is beautiful and full of history, reminded a lot of the Hershey Theatre back home. Parked at the VCU West Main Street Parking Deck, just a short walk away. Arrived about a half hour before the venue opened so we queued around the building. Luckily it was a warm fall night or I could see that being VERY cold and uncomfortable. Upon entering its the usual affair, go through a metal dictator, bag check, ticket scan, etc. Bonus points for their bag policy being much better than other venues I've been to. Staff were professional and straight forward with directions and help. We booked it straight to the merch table which was packed and a bit disorganized. Located right outside one of the women's' restrooms it was hard to tell who was in line for what. Not the best decision on placement. Concessions were available but be prepared to pay premium price as there's no outside food/drinks. We were seated in the grand tier balcony and had a great view of the stage. Seats are small and tight, something you just come to expect with older theaters. Show was fantastic and well worth the 5 hour trip to get there. Best to leave a little early or wait after the show as its always a dash to get to the exits. We waited a bit and even then it was still a mess in the parking garage to get out. read more

Beautiful venue. Clean restrooms and extremely friendly service. The lines to get snacks were extremely long. They need to figure out how to serve large groups before the show and during intermission more effectively. The theater doesn't seem to have a bad seat in the house and the acoustics are good. I really love this theater! It's super stunning inside. The seating in the orchestra is comfortable and has a lot of leg room. The process of getting into the venue is super fast and easy! They have popcorn, some snacks and wine/alcohol which is nice! The bathrooms are kept pretty clean and I feel like the line tends to move! I love having season passes and they always have fantastic choices for musicals and they even have comedy shows (not with the season passes, season passes Is just for musicals)! read more

I went to the Altria Theatre for the Katt Williams - The Dark Matter tour, and it was an absolutely sold out show. Which truly added to the atmosphere and the sound of the laughs throughout. Overall the theatre has been kept in good condition considering it was likely last renovated some time ago. I would say however that it would be great if there were some updates made to add to the ambience and comfort of the venue and seats. Both before and after the event there was strong security presence, which made the coming and going in and out of the venue much smoother and organized. This also helped a lot with feelings of safety in a large crowd. read more

The Altria Theater is stunning! ***LOCATION*** The Altria is right next to Monroe Park. Whenever you're attending a show, I highly recommend taking the bus instead, however, if you want to park, I recommend parking farther away for some free parking. ***EXPERIENCE*** This theater is gorgeous. It's a marvel to look at, both inside and outside. They offer great shows too. I've seen Jesus Christ Superstar, Book of Mormon, and The Six here. There is a lot of seating (and quite a few stairs if you get cheaper tickets like I do). There are bathrooms on every floor and food and drink options. Although they don't allow you to bring water inside, they do have water fountains. While they have great shows and amenities, I must say it's not a very comfortable venue. If you're short, like me, people's heads get in they way easily. I find myself having to sit very forward on the seat to see the show past people's heads. However, if you're tall, it's pretty cramped seating. While I've been in worse theater seats (these are at least cushioned with some leg room), I still want to warn people. Do note I usually opt for seats very high up, so the experience in pricier sections might be a lot better. ***PRICE*** It truly depends on the show. I've spent anywhere from $45-100 on a show. ***BATHROOM*** The Women's bathrooms are always clean and have plenty of stalls. ***CONCLUSION*** The Altria offers a variety of shows and performances for all interests. It's a gorgeous theater and one every Richmonder should check out once if they get the chance. read more

I came here to see Kevin Hart and this is an old theater with a nostalgic feel. It opened back in 1927 and can seat about 3,500 people. This place has had many names during its time. Prior to its current name, it was called Landmark Theater until 2014. There is metered street parking and a commercial parking garage within a reasonable walking distance. I believe that parking costs about $10 or so at the garage. The theater is located near the Virginia Commonwealth University campus, across from Monroe Park. The theater was relatively clean and the staff there seemed very friendly. They have a few bars and concession stands, but nothing major. I think there are like 3 of them. It should be noted that the concession stands are cashless. The theater has hosted plays, musicians, comedians, and talks. Some notable past performers include: Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Bill Burr, Grateful Dead, Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Roy Buchanan, BB King, Widespread Panic and The Supremes. Notable Broadway performances include Wicked, The Lion King, Les Miserables, and Cats. The seats in the theater are surprisingly spacious and comfortable. Because it is a small venue there are really no bad seats in the house. read more

Altria Theater is a great place to check out a show in Richmond. The queues are really well organized, the interior is stunning, and the seats are decent to sit in. I've been twice since I moved down here. First was for Hamilton pre-Covid. I won a ticket through the lottery and was seated just a few rows from the front all the way to the left. It still had a great view even though part of the stage was hidden. More recently, I attended the Richmond symphony holiday event. I ordered popcorn at the concession stand, not realizing how huuuuge it would be. Even after the show, I still had plenty left. I can't wait to return for another performance. I just wish tickets were a tad cheaper sometimes! read more

Came here recently to watch the Book of Mormon. The first time I was here, over 10 years ago, the theater was the Landmark. Now, Altria (former Philip Morris) has its name on the theater. Parking wasn't too bad, as there are many parallel spaces several blocks away. There's the parking garage, but it's at a cost and really packed. The theater has a real nice antique look to it. It's huge and seats lots of people. The acoustics are good and I really enjoyed watching Les Miserables, Wicked, and the Book of Mormon here. read more

We went to see Steve Martin and Martin Short here the other night. It was my first time at the Altria so I wasn't sure what to expect overall. It was such a smooth and quick process getting in and to your seats. There were a lot of attendants to help guide you if you needed direction. We were in the balcony, but the view was still really good. The seats weren't too uncomfortable given that they're theatre seats, however if you're on the taller side, there isn't much leg room. They didn't have prices posted for concessions, but when I went to get a sweet tea, it was $4 before tax which wasn't horrible. It's a beautiful venue and very organized for busy events. We had access to the Lexus Lounge before the show and during intermission. It is a very nicely laid out area with friendly and attentive staff. The food was delicious and had a very nice assortment. This is a great spot to see a show. Located around the VCU campus, there is plenty of parking and food options for before the show. We have season tickets to the Broadway in Richmond and have loved the experience. There is a large parking garage located right across the street from the theatre. It is very busy getting into and out of facility. We have found that we can park a couple blocks down on Main St. in a much smaller lot that makes arriving and leaving much quicker. It is also right near restaurants if you need to grab dinner before the show. Inside the theatre there isn't a bad seat in the house. The lines for concessions and the bathrooms gets a little crazy at intermission, but that is to be expected. Great to have a gem of a theatre in the area. read more

Richmond's Mosque, later called the Landmark, and now Altria Theatre is a historical feature of VCU and the Monroe Park area. The surrounding are is looking as good as I've ever seen it as a lifelong Richmonder and the theatre has been upgraded and kept up to par for theatre goers. Whether there for a play, musical performance, or speaker series your experience will vary with your seat. It's an old theatre and not every seat is equal. The view, the sounds, and the impact of the show will be best in the center, front rows whether on the floor or upstairs. Sitting in the back or on the sides will save money but, to me, offers a noticeably reduced experience of pleasure and entertainment. The decor is beautiful and the theatre is in and of itself a nice experience. So I can't help but say the theatre is great - a must-do for anyone living in Richmond. The shows, performers, and speakers hosted here are as good as you'll get in the area and prices are certainly fair. Over many years I've had many, many a good time and memorable nights there. Soapbox: I'm 0% a fan of the Altria Corporation and am not receptive to their efforts to pitch themselves as a good corporate citizen. I also wish they could have allowed the theatre to retain its name as the Landmark Theatre or, even better, returned it to its historic title many of us for generations simply knew as The Mosque (but no one asked me about any of this at the time). If I'd change one thing it would be to do away with the "Altria" everywhere in lights as it reminds me constantly of the death, disease, and misfortune the company has caused my family and many others. To me, you simply can't have a positive, cultural experience under the nomenclature of a heartless corporation under-mining governments worldwide, bullying developing countries into submission, and profiting from arguably some of the most harmful products on (and to) the planet. read more

It's hard to rate a place like this because I feel like it depends on the show you go to see. We saw Book of Mormon, which was AMAZING. This, we had a good experience! My main issue: IT IS CRAMPED. My knees didn't fit and hit the seat in front of me, so my feet kept going to sleep. I couldn't get comfy. It's an old theatre, so small hallways, small stair case, small rows, small seats. We sat in the balcony and it was easy to see the stage. It didn't take too long to exit the theatre from up top either. It was all just a bit too cramped. read more

Such a cool, vintage theater in the heart of Downtown Richmond. The theater is beautiful and does it's job, but only receiving four stars for the wildly uncomfortable seats, and the forced congregation between entering the front doors, and then entering the theater. It seems a bit contradictory to their extreme mask policies. read more

This is a beautiful event space in Richmond with one caveat... If you sit in the balcony, you will be uncomfortable. I felt like I couldn't extend my knees due to the chair in front of me and I'm super tiny. Splurge for the good seats! That being said I love the inside, it's gorgeous like an opera house. They have a good selection of beverages but there's usually a long line so grab one before it gets too crowded! read more

This place is really cool and vintage- from the molding in the bathroom to the ceiling in the theater. My only reason for only 4 stars is how tight the seats are (at least in the balcony, which is wear I have sat twice). I'm 5'10", and I could not sit straight- I was happy no one sat next to us so I could put my legs diagonal and not be in constant pain. Besides the lack of leg room (and if you're larger in the hips, it's gonna be a tight and/or near miss in those seats), there isn't a bad seat in the house unless you are sitting behind someone with a big head. read more

I am puzzled as to the reasons why this outdated theater gets good ratings. My wife and I attended Neil Diamonds A Beautiful Noise, and as I sat down I immediately realized the space was even less than that of the space in a commercial aircraft. Not only was there no leg space, but the width of the seats were probably 4-5 inches less than the witsch of an airplane seat. Add insult to injury, the main performer's voice was atrocious! My friend and I saw a concert here and it was a fabulous experience. We parked early and walked to dinner to avoid any kerfuffle with the parking. The theater is gorgeous and has great views from any seat. The acoustics were awesome and we had a great experience. Recently took a friend to see the musical Hamilton. This was my first time inside the Altria and just the setup and décor immediately caught my eye. I was in the balcony b seats and had a great view of the stage. The music system or the way the walls are made is fantastic. You could clearly hear ever more from the orchestra. All in all I am glad to have open my eyes...and ears to the Altria. Will definitely be back there again read more

The Altria is a beautiful theater that hosts some world-class shows, from stand up comedy and ballet to Shakespeare and opera. Most recently I attended The Lion King and Hamilton, both of which were stunning performances and I was thrilled that I didn't have to travel to a larger city like D.C. to see them. However, no matter how fantastic the performers are, Altria's seating arrangements, sound system, and enforcement of theater etiquette are lacking. They attempted to fit too many seats in the theater, making the rows so narrow they are reminiscent of airplane seats. I am below average height and I had only a few inches between my knees and the seat in front of me, making it impossible for anyone to scoot past you. I couldn't even put my winter coat over my legs or over the back of my seat, it's truly too narrow. Rows are also not staggered enough in height, so your view will be obstructed by the heads directly in front of yours. I could not see any of center stage for Hamilton even though I was in the upper dress circle. The sound system can be touchy, sounding muffled and muted on the wings of the theater. This is made worse if anyone around you is making noise, which the theater staff seems to make absolutely no effort to stop. I can understand that people, especially kids, can be excited to see a show, but singing along, standing and dancing, and talking throughout is really distracting to the people around you. During The Lion King there were people around me who left their seats and didn't come back after grumbling about the disruptive family in front of us letting their children run wild, and the usher nearby never stepped in. Very disappointing when you're easily spending $100 per ticket. read more

A theater by any other name... yes, the name may have changed over the years, but the majesty of this theater remains. We've been here several times, most recently to see "Something Rotten", a fabulous comedy full of eggy "yokes" about the origin of Shakespeare's beloved play, Hamlet! Or as a rival playwright called it "Omelet". I also saw this play on Broadway and it was even funnier the second time! The Altria was the perfect venue to host this play. This iconic theater is beautifully designed, built in the 1920's and since then renovated a few times, the hints of vintage Art Deco still remain. Gorgeous ornate Mosaic tile line the walls and floors. Rich gold and burgundy flood the theater with Egyptian murals providing an incredible backdrop above the stage. The seating is tiered to allow pretty good views from anywhere in the audience. The updated padded chairs were comfortable enough, the aisles were a bit tight though, and not much legroom so we felt a tad cramped. The opulent lobby was lovely and plush. The restrooms were clean and the pages were so helpful in locating our seats. We sat in the balcony and had an impressive view of the breathtaking lighted ceiling. Parking and traffic can be a challenge, there are parking decks nearby but they fill up fast so get there early. Applause, applause! Take a bow, Altria, your curtain call awaits!! read more

It's a nice old theater, but the four-star is a bit generous considering it could use some enhancements. That sad I still gave it four stars, to support the arts more so. Parking can be difficult if the garage is full. Arrive early, there are several places to eat nearby in walking distance, and Virginia often has free parking on weekends. Do not try and buy concessions downstairs where everyone is trying to enter, it is way too chaotic, go upstairs to one of the other counters. Also do not buy the coffee, and the popcorn is only slightly better Lol. That said, the employees were nice, possibly volunteers, but very courteous, so that fourth star I mentioned earlier pays for them:) read more
