The theater is smallish, maybe half the size of the Carpenter theater. There is a balcony. With the small size it seems like any seat would provide a decent view. We were about 10 rows from the orchestra and stage left (or right?) and the seats were fine. As for the show, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, pretty entertaining, especially the younger Scoundrel. I am so disappointed in Spotlight. We went back this year because the girls really wanted to dance. We just had the recital and it was disappointing 1. It was $30 per ticket because it was at the Carpenter theater 2. The dancers names do not appear anywhere...not even on a photocopy on colored paper or something 3. Some of the dances were good (Bollywood was great) but most were unimaginative, poorly choreographed and not in synch. 4. Our daughters' tween class had no discipline, kids doing their own thing, not being corrected on proper techniques of ballet or even behavior and they certainly did not learn proper ballet 5. The choreography for the tween class was similar to their preschool dance class 6. Our kids rarely missed class, and worked on their routines at home - which is when I found out that they did not do much barre technique. The instructor had no control or authority in class. It was a glorified, expensive babysitter. If they are going to charge these prices they need to bring a professional instructor. Not worth the money, now I have find another ballet place...ughh! The second reviewer is correct - the studio is quite impressive and clean; however, they are still charging similar prices to Richmond Ballet ($32 starting prices) and the teenager teaching our girls class had no control of the classroom and we were charged the same price as the more experienced instructors. I'm happy for those people who are happy, good for you but that was not our feeling. In my limited experience (I danced as a kid in NY, my girls danced in 2 companies in VA and 1 overseas) for the prices they are charging other dance studios have done better - and at least put the dancers names in the program. Bottom line to Spotlight - make sure ALL of your instructors are ready to go into a classroom - or at least have another instructor to watch and advise as a mentor for younger teachers (as we are all paying the same price and expecting the same outcomes from instructors), move to a more appropriate venue both for the level of the students and accordingly the prices, and put their names in the program - easy to fix.

Later, I was in a production of DIAMOND STUDS at the Barksdale Theatre, when it was still in....Ashburn (was it?) What fun both of those productions were! And during the run of DIAMOND STUDS, I presented a Sunday matinee storytelling performance called BOYS AND GIRLS TOGETHER at the Barksdale. I had the good fortune to work with Phil Whiteway in OKLAHOMA! and Bruce Miller in DIAMOND STUDS. Incredibly rewarding times those were! And both theatres served the Richmond area well. Both musical productions were well attended, and even my matinee presentation was enjoyed by the (TINY!) audience who showed up. Good memories! It's nice to know theatre is still alive and well in Richmond, and that my buddies are still involved. Even COVID-19 can't keep a good theatre down! Yee-HA! Incidentally, in OKLAHOMA!, I played the role of Aunt Eller (I've done that role three times, and directed the musical once.....that was at Anderson College, Anderson SC). In DIAMOND STUDS I was the piano player who did several vignettes. FYI, I'm sending today (5/13/2021) a packet of 8x10 black-and-white photos from the Haymarket production of Oklahoma.
