I called Heather to ask if she could help with mending a favorite fitted sheet that had the elastic ripped about a foot long due to accidentally leaving a hand towel in with it while drying. Well, she wasn't in so I left a message with my issue and she texted me back letting me know she didn't do this sort of mending at Alterations by Heather and directed me where I could be helped along with the phone number. I am writing this review together for Blue Sky Bridal and Alterations by Heather, because my wedding dress story had some major roadblocks, and both these teams worked so closely with me and each other to make the problem right. About a year before my wedding, I found my dream dress at Blue Sky Bridal's Portland location. My experience there was wonderful, the salon was so intimate, and the staff were so kind and helpful. Blue Sky Bridal recommended that I go to Alterations by Heather for dress alterations. I called and scheduled a fitting for three months out from the wedding. After the fitting when the seamstress went to begin the work, she discovered that the bodice of my dress was constructed in such a way that made it unalterable. Everyone at Blue Sky Bridal and Alteratons by Heather was astonished and said they had never seen a dress constructed this way. Blue Sky Bridal offered to credit the original cost of my dress towards another dress from their racks if this one could not be saved. I was so worried that I would have to give up my dream dress! I went in for an emergency fitting and my amazing seamstress was able to come up with a workaround that would save my dress! It was labor intensive and involved a lot of hand sewing, but she was willing to do it to help me keep the dress of my dreams. At my final fitting, when I wanted some additional adjustments made to my bustle, my seamstress was very willing to work with me and make additional tweaks to ensure I was completely satisfied! I cannot recommend Blue Sky Bridal and Alterations by Heather highly enough; they both went out of their way to make the problem right and to make sure that I was happy and taken care of. Its worth the long drive from Washougal and that's saying a lot. Heather did a wonderful job with alternating my wedding dress. She switched the straps to comfier ones. She added a little lift to my lacking chest area. She fixed the wrinkled tulle while retaining the pleats. She resized the dress from size 8 tall to size 4 short. She fixed the missing gems too. All with empowering energy. I love the work she did. She me feel like a princess and it let the stress fade from my mind. Everyone here has been so wonderful. I had a dress that needed altered for an event. We happened to have some really bad weather event occur and the day it happened, the staff text me and stayed late for me to come in and allowed them to finish up the alterations for me. Heather is awesome. She was able to take my wedding dress in by two sizes, add a beautiful bustle, and change the sleeves/neckline. Given how much we were changing about the dress, I expected to need a second alteration appointment, but Heather was able to make the dress fit like a glove after just one fitting! I live 3 blocks from a tailor in Portland, yet I drive to St. Helens for all of my tailor needs because Heather is that good. I'm short and need almost everything hemmed or taken in. I'll bring piles of dresses in, point out what's too billowy or too long and each piece is adjusted according to how it was made and how it was supposed to be worn. Heather has often said "This seam is meant to be worn higher, like this" and it changes her whole plan. I find myself buying sale dresses or tops knowing that Heather can fix anything and for a very fair price. If you need a tailor that is more like a wardrobe partner, this is the place to go! She comes with her staff to help out at the boutique and they are top notch seamstresses! Heather has re-designed wedding dresses from fixing a zipper to completely removing layers of tulle. We are so thankful for her work - she has helped re-design wedding dresses that nobody tried on to selling it within a few days after her magical touches! Well, shes a very nice lady, but i definitely won't be doing business with her. I specifically asked when i first called, "do you guys make corsets?" They said yes, so i made an appointment to talk with them about it...they do not make actual corsets and didn't seem to know much about them either. I have the pattern and the fabric, she said it would be a couple months and over a thousand dollars. Custom corset makers in Seattle and Portland are cheaper. If you need cloth loops added to a dress she would probably be fine for you. read more

I had them alter my wedding dress, which was an Anna Campbell dress. The first girl messed up the fit of the dress horribly, and there were more things wrong with it than I first got it. After having a near panic attack, the owner did the alterations herself and things were much better, if not almost perfect. The only thing wrong was that on the wedding day, we discovered that the loop holes for the train had been sewn up and I had no way to put the train up so it didn't get stepped on, so now have a rip in my silk train. read more

I went to AbH about a month before I was to attend a wedding in Phoenix. I just need a hem on some pants. After 3 attempts they still could not get it right. When I picked up the slacks, the hem was not even pressed. I immediately took them to a dry cleaners, he was not impressed. Neither am I. I still have to have them properly hemmed. Very disappointed. I took a bedskirt in to be hemmed. It was ironed and on a hanger when I took it in. When I got it back it was rolled into a ball and wrinkled. It also had a greasy stain on it. It was brand new. I think someone ate lunch while they were sewing. I won't go back there again. read more

Heather was able to translate my non-seamstress talk to understand the exact vision I had for the dress - she removed the peplum and used the lace to create a back (complete with beautiful covered buttons) and gorgeous straps of flowery lace. She went the extra mile to understand my wishes perfectly and match my crazy schedule. Heather is so talented, such an excellent communicator, so fantastic at customer service and providing value, that I chose to fly to Portland a few times to be able to work with her over all the options I had here in SF. read more

Heather was a dream. I entrusted her with my wedding dress alterations, and an add on. My wedding dress was strapless, but I really had always wanted something with detail on the sleeves. Heather was capable and willing to make me what I wanted. The detail on my lace topper was beautiful, I'm so sad that Yelp doesn't allow photos to be added so that I could show. Heather sewed the topper up from scratch, using her inspiration and creativity after I told her a brief outline of what I wanted. It was made from a sheet of Chantilly lace, which she draped over me and started snipping away. She was so fun to work with, and the dress turned out beautiful, especially because of the topper. I got to wear a gorgeous dress that felt like a one of a kind because of her addition. I literally cried when I went to pick it up and saw the final masterpiece! My sister and I had such a blast driving up to St. Helens. We joked that the city is magic. Not just because of the annual Halloween town event (which we love going to, like children), but because it's where we found our fairy god-mother, Heather! I felt like Cinderella after leaving her shop. Also, the shop is adorable and I ended up buying my wedding earrings from a local artist that she features, as well. Even though I live about two hours south in Corvallis, I will drive out of my way to see her for work in the future. I also have to mention, I was coming from out of town and her staff went out of their way to make sure I got appointments when they were convenient for me.
