My fiancé, however, found a cool Picasso style tee shirt designed in Portugal in one of the men's shops. They also had gorgeous suede baseball caps that I could not convince him to buy but considered purchasing for myself. Service in almost every store was personalized and friendly. As we were traveling, we picked up a couple of neat little books on the 500 hidden secrets in both Lisbon and Porto. We also scored some jewelry , cologne and perfume. There is a little gin bar here, but unfortunately we were unable to check it out on this visit. I highly, highly recommend having lunch or dinner at Atalho Real, located on the bottom level. Jamie W and I have been to the smaller Time Out Markets in NYC (Union Square and DUMBO), but we could never find our footing in these places. This one has the distinction of being the original Time Out Market, so it's had over a dozen years since its opening in 2014 to develop its cred with dilettante foodies and insufferable vloggers. At the same time, the rigid conformity of the food vendors to the Time Out brand makes this place feel far removed from the family-run businesses where you can get a more authentic ambiance and for the most part, cheaper prices. Paying the equivalent of $8 for an overdecorated donut may produce momentary Instagram gratification but little else (Photo 8). That's not to say the layout here isn't well organized, but basically you're relegated to long communal tables where your movements are restricted. Being elbows-to-elbow with famished, arm-waving tourists is not ideal. We were even here during off-peak hours, so I'm presuming it becomes more chaotic and cacophonous during lunch and dinner rushes, especially with the reverberations created from the high ceilings (Photo 9). With dozens upon dozens of food choices, this place is ideal for large groups who have no interest in exploring their own dining options, the ones who are perfectly satisfied with hanging out in food courts in shopping malls. I really didn't do any shopping here. It was fun to walk through and see the lights and lovely holiday decorations. (And a tip - if you need a restroom - here's a spot.) But what makes this place special are the holiday lights on the exterior. They have a lovely light and music display that runs at certain times (not sure how often), which passersby stop by and watch. It's really fun to watch. We came upon it by accident, but so glad we did. So for me, the fun is in people watching, and the decor outside. For shopping in Lisbon - you may find what you need here, but you may also really enjoy stopping in the many shops on the streets.

Some international brands which have stores here include Kiko Milano and Sephora, Mango, Tommy Jeans, and The Body Shop. There are multiple options for food and drink including large American chains such as McDonald's and Starbucks. There is some seating around the small, again which is handy if you're looking to sit down while shopping, or walking around the city, without heading into a cafe/restaurant. 3* - Certainly dwarfed by the Colombo Shopping Centre which is further out, but the best out of limited options if you're looking for a mall in central Lisbon, it is an impressive building and the Starbucks / McDonald's are particularly useful in this location.

I was just in Japan marveling over all the ceramics that I wished I could bring home, but I have to say the Portuguese ceramic game is on a whole another level... the pieces are unique (no two pieces are identical), well-made and best of all, very economically priced. I ended up purchasing multiple pieces of tableware (plates and bowls) while my partner bought a large ornamental ceramic cat as a gift -- all for around 70 euros! Make sure to ask them for bubble wrap (priced at 1€ per square meter-- the ladies at the counter will tell you how much you need) to protect your pieces for the journey home. Wow. Amongst the things I didn't even know that I was pining away for, add an 8-story+ department store that is everything to everyone. We entered in a very high-end part of the store featuring all the luxury brands one knows then descended to a food court and movie theaters. From there, I moved on to explore the amazing lower-level supermarket before leaving there and strolling into the beauty/pharmacy department filled with products that both are and aren't available in the US. I took the escalator up, eyeballing what each floor held before disembarking at a floor featuring home furnishings, electronics, housewares, and Christmas decor then got together with my friends for a drink at a wine bar on the top floor. Someone else could write a book on all I likely missed here but what I saw guaranteed that from here on I'll be searching for El Corte Inglése in every place I travel. If you think it's odd to have a department store on your must-see list in Lisbon it's clear that you've not yet been to El Corte Inglés.
