The main attraction here is to do the long hike to the ruins at the northernmost tip of the preserve. I was never given a clear answer about how many miles the hike is, I was just told it would probably take an hour each way to hike it, and they do not allow anyone access to attempt the hike past 1pm, to assure they've returned before close. You may bike it, something I wasn't told. That would've gone a lot faster and I'd have made it with my toddler! Next time. I did do a large portion of the trail, but I skipped the side trails in my attempt to reach the ruins. When I finally gave up, I did take a side path to a hammock of live oaks, and it was such a beautiful canopy! Like an arboreal cathedral! I posted a video of the birdsong here, OMG, it is crazy! Birds friggin' love this place! My dogs had fun exploring, but I don't think there was a lot of wildlife other than birds, because my dogs will usually get excited for anything and they didn't do that the whole walk. The bush here is so thick, I guess the fauna kept well hidden. This is a beautiful sanctuary, which is wonderful on the very built up island of SSI. Thank God for St Simons Trust!

There were three of us in our party- two paddle boarders and one kayaker. Rob gave some great tips on dealing with wind and currant. Note: we did a morning tour that lasted until noon! During the tour, we hopped onto one of the sand bars, popped over to a beach on another island, and paddles through some of the marsh! He gave some amazing information on the golden isles and about the sea. He helped us find sand dollars and different types of shells. He took photos and videos of us, so we didn't have to bring phones! We really appreciated that and got a great family photo as a result! Stellar experience. It was fairly priced at the Saint Simon location. This is a must!

My wife and I were visiting SSI for the first time in late July. We spent a few days on the Island…read moreand then decided to book a charter fishing trip. We contacted Jeff Stokes at Reel Stoked Charter Fishing and booked a half day trip fishing in the backwater. We showed up at the Pier and were greeted by the Captain. We got settled in the boat and took off for what ended up being a GREAT day of fishing! We used fresh shrimp as bait and casted slip bobbers up stream and used the current to drift them to the holes where the fish were at. We caught spotted trout, redfish, and my wife even caught a bonnet head shark! We fished on points and also casted and drifted over some oyster beds. It was pretty cool too to hear Tarpon jumping and splashing off in the distance. We enjoyed getting to know Jeff and had some very pleasant and engaging conversation during the day. Jeff has a really nice and clean boat that can fish three guests comfortably. The boat is equipped with up to date electronics and GPS technology and all the necessary safety equipment. The only drawback, and it is very slight, is that there is no overhead canopy on the boat or toilet. So make sure you wear a good sized hat and sunscreen and use the toilets at the pier before you depart. This was my first time fishing for these species of fish and we had a blast! Next time we are in SSI, we will be going out fishing again with Reel Stoked Charter Fishing and Captain Jeff Stokes! A nice plus too is that he accepts major credit cards including AMEX!!

The Lodge is the most private hotel option in Sea Island. The Cloister is the largest property and…read moreif you are looking for quiet and reserved, The Lodge is the place. It is a 5 star hotel and has under 50 rooms (43 to be exact). The lobby is gorgeous with dark wooden fixtures, carpets and comfortable couches. We were there in December and the Christmas trees were decorated beautifully. As soon as you arrive at The Lodge, you are welcomed by name and escorted to your room by a butler. I loved the European feel of the Lodge and each room was made to look like a room in a European castle. The artwork reminded me of Belgium and so did the heavy wood. The intent was to look like an English manor, even though it was actually built early in the 20th century. As you enter your room, your have a walk in area with wet bar, Nespresso machine, ironing board that pulls down from the closet and closet area. The bathroom is then also off of the main entryway and has dual sinks, classic metal handles and a pedestol tub. The shower was a huge walk-in shower made of marble and the handles reminded me of something from London in the early 1900's. The toiletries are by Milton Brown. As you then step into your bedoom, the Lodge will cleverly put on the Golf channel during turn-down service at night. Cookies are also part of the nightly service. The bed was very comfortable and I really enjoyed the patio with chairs that overlooked the water. It was all very peaceful and serene. The sitting area in the room was also nice and there was a big desk to work. The ceilings are made of wooden beams and add elevation to the room. I did feel like I was staying in another country and truly loved my stay. Each night around 5pm, a bagpiper marches up the field in front of the patio of the Lodge. You can sit on an Adirondack chair and listen and have an evening cocktail as the sun sets. Dining: There is the Oak Room which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Colt and Alison is the high end steakhouse serving dinner with a view of the golf greens. We had a fantastic meal here and Chef Danny is very talented. We also enjoyed breakfast and lunch in the Oak Room. Another interesting tidbit I learned is that you can take one of the BMW 750 series that is parked in the front of the Lodge and drive it over to the Cloister and other part of the hotel. The goal is to get you to test drive and this has turned out to be very profitable for this BMW dealer. I did not get a chance to make it to the Cloister and would like to go next time. The staff was amazing and the service everywhere was excellent. There is also a little gift pro shop with golf wear, souvenirs and high end sunglasses and apparel for sale. I highly recommend this resort for a quiet getaway and Southern hospitality.

New enough that it's not on the 2019 view in Google Earth and it's not on the Glynn County list of…read moreparks. But it is a park and it's definitely here as I visited it. This is the Glynn County Veterans Memorial Park and they have done a fabulous job of building it out and putting together memorials. It starts with an archway entrance with the "All gave some - some gave all" then crossing a small bridge to another grass space and beyond that, a raised brick courtyard with five plaques and six flagpoles, one for each of the five military branches of service and the center for the US flag. The park is clean and well kept. There are a handful of benches throughout and a number of tables with chairs for picnics. It is a nice use of what previously an empty lot.
