Bus service in North America bus service can be really unreliable as they never really been on schedule. The ride could be rough and riding a bus in the middle of the night alone? For 38€, I definitely think the ride is worth it. The bus is luxurious! There is even a bus attendant welcoming me and even serves me non alcoholic drinks and a breakfast snack just before arrival! The ride though long: 5 hours but was smooth. Booking process was simple as I booked through Alsa Official website with no third party booking fee. I highly recommend doing that pre travel if you are not fluent in Spanish! Pro Tip: The washroom is located in the middle of the bus so when you pick your seats when booking online, try to avoid that area! I would take Alsa again for my next trip in Spain, especially I can ride in one of those Premium Bus!

This review is based on a 5 hour bus trip from Madrid to Granada, which only cost me just over $20 US. The bus left pretty much right on time and arrived just a few minutes late of the projected 5 hour ride, despite major traffic. Apparently, there's enough demand for Granada during the week to warrant two buses. During a complete standstill in traffic, the driver ahead of my bus left his seat to come discuss an alternate route with my driver and both buses got off at the next exit. We stopped at a rest are about halfway along the way for a 20 minute bathroom and lunch break. The only reason I'm at 4 stars is because the "wi-fi" didn't really work, but unlike taking the RENFE train, I didn't actually have to go print a hard copy of my ticket from a kiosk. The bus driver accepted my online reservation as confirmation, which made boarding much more simple.

For T1-3 its a good 15 min walk to check in and another 5min to TSA if you walk at a good upbeat pace. [FYI on Dec 2025 you still have to take out liquids with the 3 oz rule, and remove your shoes.] Once you're through security, there are lots of places to eat and shop but be mindful of which gate you're departing from. My gate was A9 and after security it was an additional 15ish minutes. There were no proper signs once you got to A8 indicating where A9 was until i walked towards the restaurants and notice a flight of stairs going down with a sign reading A9-16. Once you're downstairs, there are no restaurants or shops and it gets chillier. You will have to take a bus to board so make sure youre not counting on sprinting through the gate at the last minute. There are also very limited seats. I was there 2 hours prior to boarding and got a seat, but an hour after there were no seats left. Wifi is free but limited plugs. I only took off 2 stars because the employees are neither friendly nor knowledgeable so beware of their directions. Whatever you do, do not come off strong or you will get NOWEHERE. I saw a couple get slightly frustrated and that only got them in a bigger problem. I also took out stars for lack of visible signage.

The traffic was bad and the departure gates were difficult to navigate. When we got dropped off, it was difficult to find an entry to the building where the doors would actually open. There were very few doors available and the doors had long queues to get in because they checked everyone's boarding passes at the doors. The door that we were able to enter in was over 100 check in desks from where we needed to be. The security line was also a little bit confusing. There was very limited signage, but they do require that electronics be taken out of the bags. The areas by the gates were not the most clean. A lot of the seats were dirty and there was trash in a lot of areas. The restrooms were fairly clean and there was good signage for finding gates.

This morning's adventure was to check out a different method of getting from the Barajas airport to…read moredowntown Madrid. It involved a walk, a bus ride and some more walking to get to Terminal 4 where the trains depart. Once getting here, it was easy to find the Renfe area, purchase a ticket and make my way to the platform. They have very decent signage that points the way, turnstiles to make sure that you've purchased a ticket and a small number of seats at the platform for you to wait for your train. During the morning hours, the trains seem to run every 30 minutes. There are boards indicating the next train, where it's stopping and which of the two platforms to use. There was hardly anyone aside from myself on my ride. Good option if you don't have a lot of luggage. Our issue was finding the correct train to get to the airport from our Airbnb, which was a cluster but that doesn't have anything to do with the airport. The airport itself is pretty busy but we got through customs and got to our gate in a surprisingly decent time. Sadly the Starbucks in the area we waited in was closed but oh well. All in all, all of the employees we encountered were really nice and we had a good experience at this airport.
