The Boatworks Mall is an indoor, enclosed mall right on the shore of Lake Tahoe. But it's not a massive mall like the ones you'd find in a major city. The place has a lot of character and rustic-ness going for it. There is a restaurant, a coffee/chocolate shop, a book store, a wine shop, clothing and shoe store, a home decor, furniture store, a game store - and more. While I was here, I perused the book store and Hemmings & Jarrett where I purchased and shipped home a Christmas decoration. Previous review: The selection at this shop is top notch. Unique and unexpected mixed with tried and true. However, like most places in the Tahoe area, they are experiencing a staffing issue. We personally didn't need any customer service other than check out when we visited, however the cashier was a bit apathetic. That said, I don't know their story, if they had a bad day, or if they just were not loving working at a toy shop on a busy weekend. That said, the prices are a TOUCH on the high side but honestly that is to be expected in a tourist area. I'm hoping that the cheerful workers return but honestly, I get it. The past 2 years have been rough and it's hard to be upbeat all the time. However.... I mean, it is a toy store....

We've been coming to this toy store for years, and every time we're in Tahoe we make a point to…read moreshop here because we believe in supporting small, local businesses. We typically spend hundreds of dollars on each visit, which is why this experience was so disappointing. While we were shopping, my daughter asked if she could take the display slinky out to look at it. The employee responded with a rude "No." I completely understand not wanting customers to handle display items, but at most toy stores, display toys are there for children to interact with. My daughter was polite and simply asked. A kind explanation would have gone a long way. The bigger issue was the customer service afterward. The slime my friend purchased wasn't really slime--it had the consistency of glue and immediately got all over my kids' hands. She politely let the owner know, not asking for a refund or anything, just so she was aware there might be an issue with the product. Instead of apologizing or thanking her for the feedback, the owner rolled her eyes and dismissed her. We don't expect perfection, but we do expect kindness and basic customer service--especially from a business we've intentionally supported for years. Unfortunately, this experience left us feeling unwelcome, and we'll be taking our business elsewhere.

There are a few options to do such as making a candle, garden, and painting. They also have a to-go slime kit.  We were leaving Tahoe that day so we wanted to make something that we could bring home the same day. The kids each made a garden and a candle. For the garden, we chose a pot which varies in price. We then got to choose a real or fake plant. To plant, small rocks went in first for drainage and then we filled it with dirt. Now comes the fun part to decorate with the add ons. There were different types and color rocks, moss, and tiny figurines. My kiddo loved getting his creativity on with all the options.  For the candle, we chose a container which varies in price also. We then got to choose the colored wax to break it apart. It was actually easier to break it with the hands then cut it up. Once we were done with that part, we got to choose a scent, then a wick was added, and clear gloss was poured over to seal it.  It was a cute and fun experience. The best part is that all supplies are provided, and no cleaning is needed.
