I love nature based education for my kids and our family. I love the way my son's imagination and capabilities skyrocket from his time at epiphany. When the giant snow storm came and the kids in the neighborhood all went inside, my son played for hours. Epiphany had taught him to put on the right gear and how to stay warm. But I recommend it to anyone, because I am so impressed by the staff. Jason and Amanda have built a community that really cares about the children, families, and staff. They go above and beyond other schools in the area ensuring safety inside and outside for this community. They are creating a space most higher level schools and even employers haven't mastered to help our natural environment help give us tools to be more resilient and adaptive and even find more joy in life. They have created a team with incredible credentials and experience paired with passionate energetic newer teachers. I realized a few month after sending my two oldest, that every teacher knew who my kids were. The whole campus really cares about each other and helps each other's passions grow. I thought our son found the perfect teachers for him as a Sparrow with Ms Araz and Ms Nancy matching his energy and enthusiasm. And then he became a Cardinal and Ms Melanie and Ms Shannon have matched him perfectly where he is developmentally and now he is making up songs every day. Our daughter became more confident in her own strengths in the Hawks class with Ms Wendy's support and Ms Heathers ability to match each child's individual entry points and the best method to take the next steps. Due to moving from Atlanta, this is our third preschool experience and Epiphany has the spark of magic I want for my kids. The community events help me reflect on the changes in nature and the joy of friendship. The staff have this ability to remember all that each young child holds most precious, while also having the patience to get them dressed in the right gear for all the different weather. (The gear is important, but they give great lists to help parents be prepared and we've been able to get almost everything on Buy Nothing from our Neighborhood group so it hasn't added extra cost.) My kids are both more practical and more imaginative from the time at Epiphany. I am grateful for the space for kids to really get to be who they are and fully seen. I have loved getting to know other families and finding support as we all figure this out together.

The environment sets the tone when first walking in - with its lush green spaces you are immediately transported to a child's dream come true. Surrounded by a forest with trails where everyone gathers and plays music, a garden where my kids have grown fruits and vegetables in the summers, an awesome mud kitchen where my child's inner chef comes to life, and a very special climbing tree that my oldest particularly loves. The space has a way of naturally encouraging creativity and exploration. The staff feel like a family -- and they have a knack for nurturing social skills, problem-solving, and have a contagious deep appreciation for nature. Watching our children thrive at Epiphany has been a joyous experience, affirming our wholehearted recommendation to others. Epiphany Preschool is truly a gem.

PLEASE READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES…read more This school is the worst school I've ever seen. first of all they give way too much homework. the homework is so much that i have to do the homework for the whole day! And the homework is way too hard that we had to hire a tutor to come every day! Second of all is uniform. The uniform in this school is so uncomfortable and we have to buy about 20 uniform and they don't even give us money to buy the uniform. Third of all is the costs. The school is so so so! Expensive even with the uniform and the tutor and the lunch menus and the monthly payments and the stuff for the science fair and the school supplies! Fourth of all is the size. The school is sooo small that every grade has one classroom. And the staff is so little there's not enough of them. and so is the school playground. The school playground is in a parking lot and we have to play carefully and stop playing just because of the cars. And there's only a tiny playground that's a house playground that doesn't even have a swing and only first and second graders can use it!. Fifth of all, is teaching. the teachers DO NOT EVEN TEACH they just test us all the time and rely on textbooks and the teachers call their family members and even put their country song to not let us focus. And finally Sixth of all is dismissal. they don't have busses because it's a broke school and they dismiss Students with a website that is always rigged when i see my car they don't call it and i have to wait 7-10 minutes. and when students are called their names are still on the screen. I am so so so upset and disappointed for what this school has done! the whole school is lying about their best private school, trust me! And don't attend this school or believe in the 5 star reviews. I had experience and i hate this school! take your kids out of this school if you want them to graduate! If you don't know what school to go to then go to bull run elementary school. who would make such a school like this!

They really care for the children with their heart and we get wonderful arts each week. We also made friends that we still keep in touch with after preschool from this place. The classes are in a small size so that each child get the attention they deserve. I also love their play based learning because at this age, I think it's more important for them to have fun while learning and my child knows his A B C's and learn to write his name from this school. If you want your child to love school and ask to go on weekends (lol), this is the place!!

It checked all my boxes of being clean, diverse, and a learning environment but it also was organized. I appreciated that each room had a picture and description of each teacher including their background and how long they have worked there. I also loved that there was a dry erase board with information on next diaper and next bottle. As any new parents, we were nervous about the care anyone would provide that wasn't us. Now being at Chesterbrook for over 6 months with our son, I would absolutely recommend it to anyone! The cleanliness and organization continue to stand out, along with the teachers and principals kindness and love to not only our son but the other children there. They use an app called Links2Home and we get 4-6 pictures on average of our son throughout the day. Communication through the app with the teachers and principals have been quick and responsive to our requests. Recently we had asked them to switch the order in which he eats, bottles first then solids and they adapted within the next feeding time for our son. This past Friday they had a petting zoo and give us monthly finger paintings our son has done. It's difficult to allow someone else to watch your only child but I will say I have seen him blossom and become so social with others as well as seeing his natural joy be nourished with the same love that my partner and I give. Love this place!!

9/17 Update: A friend who sent her son to Basis McLean reports it no longer calls itself either a…read moreSTEM or STEAM school. Now it is a European school with art and music required at the elementary level. The upper grades offer same as electives. Tuition is now $30k w parity w other independents the goal. As a new school dependent on parent committees, stability is an issue. Admin and faculty also still influx. We explored Basis' upper school because we'd like our daughter to be in a more international community as she experienced in Silicon Valley. A high honors student at a leading independent upper school, she seemed eligible. I had scheduled a tour and stated what grade our daughter is in. Basis collateral, messaging and the admissions rep who called me failed to indicate she would need a transcript consisting of almost all AP credits to transfer to Basis. The entire Basis upper school curriculum - 5 core courses per day, no art, no PE, no frees - is AP courses. Our daughter's school doesn't subscribe to this approach. The independents teach most classes above grade level, use college text books, offer honors classes to first and second year students, and some AP classes; however, I'm not aware of any offering a full menu of APs. It would benefit Basis to refine its messaging. (Note: Basis' unique 100% AP curriculum seems to be why their charter high schools outrank TJ, Gunn, Stuyvesant - all schools - on surveys). The tour date didn't work for us, so we went to an open house thinking our daughter was eligible for the school. Here is what I observed and later researched about this unique school. Good international mix. Zero African Americans at our session. Significant cadre of Nysmith School families. Teachers never teach any subject but the one they know and love. Subject experts. We will have a makers' area one day. For the pre-K and lower school only. Not art. We expect parents here working to make us the best. Parent committees. (Parent bullying reported at Basis charter schools). We want kids to ask questions. Target classroom size is 25. (An issue?) We are dedicated to your kids at Basis. (David Safier writes in Basis Education...Success by Attrition, established AZ Basis charter schools show continuous attrition with high school graduating classes so small success can't be measured. Mclean is private. Attrition unknown). Cofounder Olga Block states Basis is not for exceptional children it is for children who are workaholics. Recess? The parents who spoke at the open house reported 2 hours of homework per night. I assume their kids are top students who do not struggle with homework. School ends at 3:45pm. Lots of after school clubs, zero fine or performing arts, a handful of sports. No mention of participation. Open to all but very limited spots on teams like the Debate Club. Winners only on teams. As a for profit school, this makes sense. Build the brand. In terms of credentials and experience, the teachers who presented were average based on our daughter's school and other independent open houses we have attended. All were well qualified, experienced educators. Unlike her teachers and those at other schools, Basis teachers culturally seemed exceptionally jingoistic. The Upper school English teacher derisively stressed grades from other schools would never be considered valid at Basis. The Latin teacher spent 5 of his 10 minutes with us speaking Latin. Then asked us to raise our hands if we understood him. Publicly shaming all but 2 individuals in the room. And distant. This distance from prospective parents and students could be a function of the school's "retention" policy. At its charters, students take year end exams to qualify for advancement to the next grade. A child is "retained" in the current grade if he/she fails the exams. As a private school, I assume new students are thoroughly tested (IQ etc) and vetted (current grades, letters of recommendation) mitigating "retention" risk since "flunking out" adversely impacts children socially and emotionally and getting a spot at highly ranked private schools gets harder as children age. My husband and his brother thrived at a top public technical high school in NYC. STEAM schools have their place in my opinion, though Basis seems more STEM than STEAM and their upper school liberal arts might be better labeled neo-liberal. That said, they are clearly very committed to their model and $25K per year is a relative bargain for private school here. (Basis offers no financial aid which keeps tuition low. But get the picture?). The parents we met were great people. Very multicultural, except zero African Americans. The student ambassadors were delightful. Excellent facilities. More schools. More choices. Good for the DMV.

This school is not good for the wellbeing of your child. Firstly, the lunchtime is 25 minutes…read more They only are able to go outside twice a week, for 25 minutes each day. My child's classmate reported a peer being punched in the face and the teachers doing nothing about it. The curriculum is very rigorous, which is great, however, 1 unit in almost every class usually lasts around 3-4 days: they cover too much in such a short period of time to try to cram everything in, and make the students learn the material through constant assessments. This is fine as they get a wide berth of knowledge, but don't learn the "in-depth" material and reasons behind the concepts unless they stay for another few years (this is because of their "spiraling" curriculum where they revisit concepts to add more depth). Every week, they have at least 1 quiz/test, (because of their math studies), but most weeks, it's 2 or 3. In addition to this, if your child stops for 30 seconds to tie their shoe 2 minutes after dismissal times due to a bathroom stop, they will immediately be asked to attend "Late Bird" for ~$45 because they are "delaying". There is no PE for middle/high school unless you take it as an elective. Lastly, the culture there is very toxic. There is hardly any sense of community as everyone is competing with each other and children often learn, from their peers, to believe that receiving a 99% on their test is "poor performance". The teachers do little to combat this, and this is the same attitude they have towards kids calling out derogatory comments in the midst of lessons.

This is my review from my son: : I liked your indoor camp a lot. It was exciting for all ages, and I met a lot of new friends there who were a lot of fun! There's science experiments and many rooms to explore to do activities in. There are groups in the camp: yellow, red, blue, and purple. The groups all represent different age groups, so you can play with people your age. It's a fun place with everything a child would dream of doing, and the staff are really nice too. There's educational classes for reading and art. The camp also tires out all the children by making lots of play which tires them to sleep extra early. It's a big place with a lot of running around space and do activities inside the building! There are a lot of board games to play such as Monopoly, Bingo, Uno, and Connect 4!
