We were really disappointed to have to cancel our trip to Kauaʻi this week because of the destruction caused by Hurricane Lowell last week. Our hearts go out to the kamaʻāina who lost their homes, businesses, or jobs, and to everyone still dealing with the aftermath. While I understand power has now been restored to roughly 85-90% of the island, many people are still without power, and there are plenty of repairs and rebuilding ahead. Since we couldn't bring ourselves to Kauaʻi, we decided to bring a little aloha home instead! We started with a delicious dinner from L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. Then I called Aloha Spirit Shave Ice, and they were kind enough to make a house call. Nate from Aloha Spirit showed up with his equipment in the back of his pickup, and before long, we--and several of our neighbors--were enjoying some delicious Hawaiian-style shave ice. Firstly, the ice texture is soft and fluffy; very reminiscent of the shave ice you find in Hawaii. In short, some of the beat shave ice this side of the Pacific, and aloha spirit true to their name! We got to meet this family business at a local event. A line gathered quickly and people looked excited, so we looked at the menu while we waited our turn. There were plenty of tropical flavors, including some island favorites. The gentleman serving us was a master of his craft and he knew how to hype it up! We tried a few: a guava, a POG (pineapple orange guava) and a piña colada. But he recommended some extra flavors that really took the shave ice to another level, and finished them off with a snow cap (coconut cream) and a little mochi on the side. Had Aloha Spirit at a Golf Tournament and it was the best on-course addition I've ever experienced. A golf tournament in July is hot, but having shave ice on the course was the perfect cool down. I've had many shave ice in Cali and nothing compares to this. Also, the flabors they use are high quality, none of those plastic tasting sugar everybody else uses.
