Charming historic hotel, the closest one you can get to Phillips Exeter Academy (just a 4-5 minute…read morewalk). Rooms are on the small side, and you definitely feel like you're in an old historic building; however, the beds are comfortable, heating system is effective without being overly loud or breezy, and the bathrooms are nicely updated. Not much storage for clothes -- no chest of drawers, and the only shelves we could use were in the bathroom. Wi-fi is free but not superfast. There are adequate power outlets throughout the room (on the wall, and also as part of a lamp and an alarm clock). TV service is pretty basic; no premium movie channels or Chromecast ability. Keurig machines are standard, which are a nice touch. No fridge or safe. The lobby and lounge areas are beautiful, as is the attached restaurant, Epoch. Complimentary continental breakfast includes bagels (with a toaster), prepackaged waffles, cereals, pastries, fruit, yogurt, coffee/tea, milk, and a few juices. Coffee was quite good. They routinely put out really good cookies in the afternoon. Front desk staff are friendly and helpful. The first time we stayed here, I felt that some kind of fragrance in the room was making my eyes feel very dry, so I spoke to the front desk ahead of our second stay. They assured me that they use fragrance-free detergent for the sheets, but housekeeping does spray air freshener, so I asked for that not to be done -- and I had no problem this time. Plenty of free parking on the street in front of the hotel, as well as a large lot in the back. 2 Tesla chargers and one ClipperCreek charger (with a J-1772 plug) are available for guests, but it's $25 per charge (presumably no matter how much electricity you use).

We checked into the Fairfield Inn in Exeter for two nights. The one comforting thing about…read moreMarriott Hotels is you can expect consistency. This Fairfield Inn was like others we have stayed in and nicely decorated. The staff was very welcoming. We were given a corner room on the 3rd floor. The room was clean and nicely appointed. We had a very comfortable, king size bed and a desk with good electrical outlets. There was a large TV, chest of drawers, microwave, refrigerator, coffee maker, and a closet. The room was very quiet even though we were on the front of the building. What is always nice is that offer breakfast each morning. The offerings include coffee, tea, juices, milk, cereals, granola, waffles, cheese omelets, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage and a variety of breads, bagels, English muffins, etc. My husband enjoyed the scrambled eggs, bacon and English muffin. I had a fresh bagel with cream cheese. The coffee was fresh and delicious. We enjoyed our stay!

Absolutely Not Worth the Price! This hotel was one…read moredisappointment after another. For the price they charge, you would expect a clean, comfortable, well-maintained hotel. Instead, you get the vibes of a cheap roadside motel that desperately needs renovations and better management. Our stay started off poorly. Check-in is at 4:00 PM. We arrived around 6:00 PM and were told that one of our rooms still wasn't ready. We were also told we would have side-by-side rooms, but instead our rooms were across the hallway from each other. We were told both rooms would be exactly the same, yet they weren't. The rooms themselves were filthy and poorly maintained. The floors were not vacuumed, swept, or mopped. Apparently, their idea of cleaning is using a giant lint roller. One room had an unflushed toilet, and there were no tissues--just an empty tissue box. Rooms are also not serviced daily. The air conditioning stopped working, which made the already uncomfortable room even worse. The rooms are extremely dark, with basically one main light between the beds and a desk lamp. The pillows are thin and hard, and the beds are extremely hard as well. They advertise the beds as queens, but they felt more like full-size beds. There are also no ice buckets and no safes in the rooms. The elevator is another concern. It jumps while you're riding in it, and the inspection expiration date posted on it was already past due. That's not something I want to discover while staying in a hotel. The Wi-Fi is ridiculous. You have to create an account and join their system just to use it, and it only works inside your room. Once you're in the common areas, you essentially have no service and no Wi-Fi. Then there's the ridiculous key-card situation. On the day of checkout, they deactivate your room keys before checkout time. We went to breakfast at approximately 8:30 AM and returned to our rooms around 8:50 AM--with checkout not until noon--and BOTH rooms were already locked out. We had to go back to the front desk just to regain access to our rooms. The pool is laughable. It's basically the size of an extra-large hot tub, yet the online photos make the hotel and amenities look substantially better than what you actually get. In general, the photos online do not accurately represent the hotel in person. Breakfast was extremely limited, which isn't necessarily unexpected for a hotel, but the bigger problem was that nothing was kept stocked. Staff were sitting right in the dining area while guests were trying to get basic items. We verbally told a staff member that we were out of coffee and were completely ignored. Another guest eventually had to go up to her and tell her that coffee was needed. The entire experience was frustrating from beginning to end. When you're paying what this hotel charges, you expect something clean, comfortable, and properly maintained. Instead, you're paying premium prices for a very budget-level experience. The pictures make this place look far nicer than it actually is. Don't let them fool you. There are plenty of hotels where your money will be much better spent. I absolutely would not stay here again and cannot recommend it.
