Yelp! rocks again! - Yelp! has done well for home service contractors 3 out of 3 previous times, so…read morewhen I finally got around to doing much-needed flooring, I turned to Yelp!, found three highly-rated flooring companies with consistently legitimate favorable-to-stellar reviews (I disregard reviews from Yelpers with only one or two reviews). As mom and dad always stressed, I always get at least three estimates/bids. The visit and estimates - I contacted all three flooring companies within a two-day period, mid-last-week. All got back within one or two days, but Melvin actually responded and came out same day. All three had good service on the estimate, offering suggestions here and there and so although I gave the edge to Melvin I was waiting on prices. Early the next week I received the three estimates and two were within $200 of each other, the third was $2,200 higher with no difference in materials or anything else on the detailed estimate. All three did a great job of detailing the work to be done and that made it easy to choose... to choose Melvin. The job - Melvin started the work last Friday, with two of his two-man teams working all day. Saturday and Monday one team worked all day. Tuesday and today they finished up. One team includes his brother, Milton, who did some fine craftsmanship work (see pics). Every day, the floor specialists were very special, great attitudes, polite, protected everywhere with plastic, moved my furniture gently, etc. They were perfect, it's not easy to get a skilled craftsman who also cares about the customer and customer service with a great, personable attitude. The job included four rooms and stairs: 1. Replace 26-year old vinyl floor in kitchen with faux-marble luxury vinyl. 2. Refinish oak hardwood in living room, family room, hallway and pine stairs - one coat of stain and two coats of oil-based polyurethane (Melvin explained during the estimate that although oil-based requires drying overnight/longer time, my 72-year-old hardwood floors deserve/need oil-based because water-based in not as gentle on brittle wood). Paint the stair risers white. The results - the clean-up was meticulously done and they refused to accept payment until after I assured them everything was perfect. Best part of it was I could tell they really cared about making me happy. See the pics. The darkish color on the stairs is just a photo/lighting anomaly as is the red color on the floors in the family room. THANK YOU, Melvin, for running such an amazing small flooring business. We wanted to make our shower bigger and replace our built-in tub for a stand alone tub. We contacted 3 companies for an estimate. One contractor flaked and called the morning of the appointment saying he couldn't make it. He suggested we do a zoom consultation. When I asked how he would get the measurements, he said it was "just" a bathroom and he didn't intend on doing sketches anyways. His condescension made me cancel everything with him. The second contractors was nice, but had a high estimate, then suggested we purchase low end materials to save on the cost. He gave us the estimate right away, then pressured us to accept it right then. He offered a $1K discount if we agreed before he left, but what's $1K on a $32K price tag,so we told him we had 1 more contractor to meet with. And then there was Mr. Luis. He came in with a smile, removed his shoes and actually listened to all my concerns about my current bathroom and my dreams about my future one. He took his measurements and then repeated back the things I said I really wanted. There was no pressure and he said he would contact me in a few days with an estimate. It took him about 4 days to get back to me. Not only was his estimate significantly less,but it also came with a computer generated rendition of my bathroom space from multiple angles. I had sent him some tile patterns I liked, and he had them in the image, so I could really visualize my new bathroom. He did the rendition 2 more times with different tile patterns I sent him to help me choose the one I really liked. I also want to note that he could've easily charged more because I told him I thought it was going to cost $40K when he came to do the estimate,but he still gave me his honest price. We set a date for work to start after I paid a 33% deposit. His team, led by Mr. Wilson, were punctual and really respected my home. They draped wherever they needed to walk and they walled off my bedroom with plastic so dust and debris wouldn't get all over my living space. Mr. Wilson answered all my questions and kept me updated on everything being done each day. He assisted me in buying some of my products. His team kept everything very tidy when they left each day. He was a dream from start to finish. The 2nd deposit was due when the tile install began. Mr. Carlos did all of the tiling himself. He gave his professional opinion about the tile I chose for the shower floor, which led me to use the same tile as the shower walls and honestly, I like it better. The bathroom was completed in 2 weeks. The last deposit is due upon completion. When all the work was done, they polished and cleaned the entire bathroom AND several surfaces in my bedroom. They wiped down and dusted the TV stand and fireplace (both in the sitting area outside of the bathroom). They had only gotten a small amount of dust on them from the construction, so I just planned to dust when they were finished,but they did it for me without me asking. They also wiped down the bannister as they exited. As a mom of 3 kids under 5, I appreciated that more than they know. I've had people work in my house before who were neat, but I have never had a team clean up after themselves as thoroughly as this one. I'd also like to mention his office manager, Ms. Gigi, handled the administrative side seamlessly. She also answered all of my emails promptly. Now, our insurance company had hired a company to repair our hardwood kitchen floors, but after ripping the floor apart, and having us wait for weeks without any progress being made in repairing the floor and other repairs that were needed to be made as a result of the water damage, we contacted our insurance company, and asked if we could get our own contractors. After getting their approval, we contacted Marco of BR Flooring, and the rest is history! Our hardwood floors look superb! The contractors the insurance company had hired had made a true mess in our kitchen, and said they wanted to replace the entire hardwood floor throughout our first level; however, Marco and his team repaired the damaged area, sanded the floors, stained the floors, applied three coats of polyurethane, and finished the floor with a sealant! The floor looks better than it has ever looked before! We can't give Marco and his team enough credit for the superb job they did! We highly recommend BR Flooring--they are GREAT! Another thing, we had searched and searched for an individual/a company to replace our kitchen cabinet that was damaged as a result of the water damage, but we kept running into a brick wall. We spoke with at least five to six people who we thought could help, but time after time we ended up in the same situation. We only needed one cabinet, but individuals wanted to replace all of our kitchen cabinets. One company even suggested that we remodel the entire kitchen, even though the entire kitchen didn't need remodeling. Again, Marco and his team helped us! Marco and his team were able to get our custom-made cabinet, install it, install our granite countertop, and get everything in our kitchen back to its normal state.
