I read the glowing reviews for Darling, including one about a Toro just like ours that had been brought back from the dead. We called, dropped it off, got it back, and OMG, it looks and runs like a brand-new machine! (I wish I had a "before" photo, honestly, we had neglected it so badly it was ready for the scrap heap.) On top of that, Darling didn't charge an arm and a leg like most places do these days. This experience felt like stepping back into the 1950s, when people had what they called a work ethic. He's fair, honest, highly skilled, and personable. (and usually, only a 5-7 day turnaround). How does he do it?

My saga. I have a Husky w/Honda engine. It had been used for about 1.5 years and then rolled into…read morea shed for the last 7 years. It was put away as in rolled in and left to sit as is, no draining of gas, no wipe down, nothing. It had been replaced by a riding lawnmower. Today I have a son that just purchased his second home and needed a lawn mower for the new lawn. I thought of the Husky, but it was a poor sight at this moment. Dust, dirt, little oil, and plugged up fuel system. Started looking for a good repair shop, found reviews for Darling. It was located almost an hour & 1/2 from me. Decided to go anyway. Glad I did. Mike was on a service call at a customers home, so called him. He answered, we talked, I left my mower at his shop. I gathered that I should have called beforehand and also missed an online msg that he was semi-closed for a week or so. Despite all of this, he worked with me as if none of this happened or was important. Said no problem fixing the mower and gave me a very fast turnaround time, but I received an incredible turn around time with everything needing repair or replacement being done including a thorough cleaning on the outside. He is as all others have described. He helped me as if I had called first to make an appointment, and had waited until he was officially back to work, and was first in line. I wasn't any of these. Mike came across as an expert mechanic, friendly, concerned, and as what just about every reviewer describes him. Honest, reasonable, helpful, friendly etc.. I live in the Gaston, Oregon area, quite a way from Mike's shop! It was worth it- Thank you Mike. DC

I called Jay's…read moreand told him that I had 2 cordless mowers that needed work - I was specific about the type of work needed. He said "bring 'em down," so I did. Looking around his shop it was overwhelmingly filled with gas mowers - looked more like a graveyard than a fix-it shop. Only a couple of other cordless, stacked on top of the stacks of mowers. I demonstrated the problems, and he then confided that he'd have to learn how to fix them. Welcome to the 21st Century. I asked how long and he said at least 2 weeks. I called at least 2 weeks later, a lady answered saying that Jay still had to learn how to fix them, so I told her that I would be by to pick them up on Saturday, ready or not. When I got there, it was obvious by the amount of dirt and dust that they were abandoned outside for the duration, untouched. And, the lady called me rude because I was an irate customer. I wonder why.

I came back to pick up the mower and was told the final balance was over $160 I asked if the $50 deposit was going to be taken out of the final balance and for the first time the service was an additional $60 putting the price over $220 for the service. No one called me to approve an additional costs. Honestly If I would have known the cost upfront I would not have gotten the service but rather just used the mower till the motor died and bought a new lawn mower. The cost of the service was past the tipping point of the cost of a new mower. Felt like there was a bait and switch after we had an agreed to price. Not what I would expect from a big name in the industry.

But after the last interaction yesterday, I will never consider buying anything here. Apparently it was too difficult to attempt to locate or order a 3-1/2" idler pulley for my 30 year old mower. I stopped in B/C I prefer face to face interaction and support of local businesses. The guy behind the counter, although he was nice, simply wouldn't even take 5 minutes to order a $30 pulley. The whole interaction was less than 45 seconds, barely looked at the part in my hand and told me to get it from Amazon and there was no way he could help, instead of pulling out the Oregon book he has behind the counter and flipping through some pages or trying to even see if they had anything close. Too bad, I was hoping to purchase a new machine this year from them with cash. Guess I'll find somewhere that isn't too lazy to help.

I also borrowed a friend's vintage (old) chipper shredder, used it for a season, and wanted to repay his generosity by getting it tuned up along with the other two. I was pleased to find that there was a shop here in town that was not a major seller of implements because I didn't want to have to resist buying a new machine since that is almost always the solution to an older machine in need of maintenance. I brought the three pieces to Zurita's and requested that all three be completely tuned, new oil, filters, plugs, blades sharpened, etc. I knew it was going to be somewhere around $400 for the three since the saw had lain unused for a couple of years and the motor on the chipper was a much older model and was showing its age, chuffing along instead of running smoothly. It took four days, it was $440 and I am thrilled with the results. All three started on the first pull, ran smoothly, and all of the blades had been sharpened. Timely, the price was where I expected it to be, friendly guy, and the saw, mower and chipper run better than I can remember. I couldn't be happier.
