It is to your local pet shop what B&Q is to the tiny hardare shop around the corner. They stock bedding and pet food in bulk - perfect for kenels I imagine, and have a vast aquarium section. It's pretty tempting too when little electric coloured fishys are priced at a mere 99p - but don't get carried away; the start up costs for fish are huge - even more so than any other animals. Plus, fish are so delicate that my friend and I managed to make a game out of spotting the casualties floating at the top of the tank! You can literally get EVERYTHING for pets here; toys, treats,cages, leashes, collars, pet guides, dog clothes, cages, beds... the list goes on. There's even a comprehensive selection of "Beware of" signs for every breed of dog - even the ridiculous chihuahua! There's a small animal section, and a touching adoption area where the animals automatically become more cute by association with abandonment. Disappointingly, there were no larger animals like cats and dogs to coo over, and the bird section has disappeared. So don't go looking for that budgie for Granny here.

Items here are incredibly cheap compared with big name retailers and there are plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans including soya milk and veggie sausage mix. I really like this little local store and would much rather part with my pennies here than fork out for big brand branches.

This is one of the bigger Pets at Home I've been in…read more Situated close to the Linwood / Paisley ASDA, this store feels like a supermarket for pets and accessories, unfortunately when I think of supermarkets I think of highly competitive prices but unfortunately the prices in here are higher than most. Pets at home are one of these stores that sell pets (fish, rats, gerbils, rabbits, etc) as well as items for pets. I have a love / hate relationships with pet stores that sell animals as I feel that pets are scentient animals and not products for stores to sell, but now that that little rant is over, sometimes you just need to find something for that animal in your life. There is a wide range of everything from pet food, toys, treats, cat trees, minor pet health treatments, cleaners and most things that every pet guardian needs, but like all big chains it feels soul less. So overall, loads of choice, loads for all types of pets, but not the best on price.

How do you describe a place like this?…read more First it is next to Ikea - that Swedish Monolith of low priced furniture. Ikea is the type of place where you enter and immediately think that this place could change your life for the better. Just buy a couch and set of throw cushions and you could be as happy as a Swede. Dobbies is similar in scope. It reminds you that there is a big world outside of your living room and you have been neglecting it. You should have been in the garden - digging, weeding planting and feeding the birds. Why have you been playing Xbox? Don't you know that your lawn needs feeding? Ikea reminds you how shit your life is - Dobbies tells you how shit your garden is. How can they call this a Garden centre though? Yes, it has plants and all things plants related but it also carries a lot of other stuff. Why sell meat in a Garden Centre, or coffee, or any of this other stuff? In some sense it may be better to call this the gift centre of Dobbies. You would not go here to buy a pound of coffee for your morning cup but you may pick up a bag of expensive specialist coffee for a friend. Same for beers and booze. Dobbies is self contained with a massive building and outside area for larger plants, aggregate and sheds. Pretty impressive and (when I went there) extremely busy. Now I have made my opinions known about Garden Centres (tea rooms where you can buy plants). I also have let folks know where I would prefer that they bought their rose bushes and tomato plants (Erskine). But this Dobbies powerhouse does a very good job and they try to be environmentally friendly from the materials used in the construction to the parking lot outside. Am I a little bit upset when you look at the massive parking lot at Dobbies and the tiny one at Erskine. Yeah a bit. If you travelled a little ways down the Clyde, you could buy your plants and help some folks that need it. Just think about it. No guilt here, just saying.
