Traveling with EF Tours and this was our hotel for our Rome portion. This hotel says it is a 4 star…read morehotel on their website and this was NOT our experience! Why because a 4 star would have at least friendly staff. I asked front desk clerk for towels at 10:00 pm and was told it's too late to get towels. When I questioned how were we to shower - magically it was not to late. The night prior, the same guy helped with directions to McDonalds since there was a taxi strike and said the hotel is open 24 hours - after returning from McDonald's, we found ourselves locked outside the gate and struggled to get someone to open the gate or respond to our phone calls. I will say, the woman who worked the bar in the morning was extremely friendly and provided ice. Second, we received breakfast daily separately from the hotel guests since we had a group of 50. Ham was left uncovered, oranges were so "fresh" you could not peel them. The one dinner meal we received was not good. One person in our group did mention the food served at the restaurant was better and I noticed the breakfast bar upstairs looked fresher and more appealing than what we were served. Hotel room is basic but has nice bathrooms (note there is a glass in the shower wall that can be seen into the bedroom - although not completely see through). Our room had really good AC but several others in our group had no AC. Plus there's not AC in common areas. Take note that this hotel is called the Black Hotel and prepare yourself to have all walls outside of the bedroom painted dark with minimal lighting in the halls. I watched an older couple struggle to make it to their room in the dark and with the room numbers lit up close to the ground. Finally, I know hotels can't control who their guest are but our stay was overrun by a crew of highway or construction workers, who sat outside eyeing the young girls in our group. The hotel is in a neighborhood with no restaurants in walking distance. Yes we did walk to McDonald's but unless the road outside and to the right is fixed, it's not really a place to walk to safely. So stay if you like a black themed hotel but it's a never again for me.

The staff is rude, slow and unfriendly. This hotel is NOT for tourists without cars. It's nowhere…read morenear a subway and requires expensive cabs to get to and from.

Our cruise stopped in Civitavecchia, and rather that make the 90 minute one-way trip to see Rome…read moreagain, we decided on finding a private tour around the port area. We found an appealing tour offered by DriverInRome, "Countryside, Castles, And Cute Villages," a 9-hour trip visiting 3 medieval towns and a castle around the nearby Lake Bracciano. I offered other cruise passengers the opportunity to join the tour, and ended up needing two 8-passenger vans. Let me start by saying our drivers, Riccardo and Costinel, were terrific---both very outgoing and spoke fluent English. I was in Riccardo's van, so I can speak very highly about him in particular. Riccardo grew up in the area and knew it like his backyard, enough to know to take some back roads when we hit construction traffic. The three towns, Bracciano, Anguillara and Trevignano, all had historic town centers but were still unique in their own ways. We loved having free time in each stop, like enjoying cappuccino and a pastry in a sidewalk cafe, strolling through a street market, strolling up to a hilltop church for some great photos, and watching a clutch of toddlers in a day care class all holding onto a rope while walking the cobblestone streets like ducklings. The scenery was fantastic, and the towns usually had high points to get some great photos. The castle was in remarkable condition, and gave you all the flavor of medieval aristocracy. During our walk through, we heard a bit of a scream and looked up along one of the castle walls, realizing that a young man had just proposed to his lady fair (she said yes). She was still trembling as we congratulated them as we passed them on their way down. The drivers also took us to a great little restaurant which they had to research for us, because on a Monday in this region many businesses are closed, including many restaurants. Know that drivers are not tour guides---in Italy, guides need to be educated and certified, so Riccardo could not guide us through the towns, but we knoew that in advance. But what he can do is give us his knowledge of the areas while we're driving, such as sites to see in the towns and history of the area, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Later in the cruise, we were on tours that had groups of 35 people, and having a private driver and exploring on our own is our much preferred way to explore. Riccardo and Costinel were terrific hosts, and all 16 of us had a wonderful day seeing the authentic Italy and making new friends. I wholeheartedly recommend DriverInRome.

We were on a cruise ship and had to scramble to get to the shore excursions desk by 9:00 pm to figure out a new plan for the next morning. I want to take this time after getting back from the greatest vacation we've ever had. I want every…read moreAmerican to know , if you go to Rome and you need transportation , that this company should be your very first choice. First of all you get Julian who speaks fluent English and knows the city of Rome and Naples like the back of his hand. This man was the single most important reason why our "day" trip was so successful. It started at 7am but we were late but Julian wasn't. He showed up in a exceptionally clean Mercedes van large enough to carry 6 adults with ease and comfort. He gave us the tour in Rome pointing out things we didn't even know we wanted to see. For the uninitiated if your American ass thinks your driving in Rome in a rental car and think it's all good your so mistaken. Your going to get in a accident or hit a pedestrian. Take it to the bank. You could spend $200 Euro for a travel bus but you just screwed yourself in quality and excitement not to mention the personal touch of a guided tour of the best driver Italy has to offer. Julian is just so much fun. Heading to Palermo after Naples the traffic was truly screwed. It was a least a hour just sitting behind the tour buses but Julian saved the day. He took is thru the craziest most beautiful areas most tourists won't ever see. Also you would be afraid to try as many of the areas were capable of only one lane of traffic. Omg I can't tell you how grateful we were not to have to sit in that as we are from San Francisco and have to deal with that gridlock on a daily basis. When we arrived in Palermo Julian took us to the very best food we have ever enjoyed in our lives. I mean that literally. I had no idea how much the restaurants in the USA have been screwing me over my entire life. The pasta is just so damn good. But what completely surprised all of us was the sea food. The best of food anywhere in the world. The desserts were just as good as the main course. If you go tell Julian to take you to his friends restaurant. We can go on and on about the food but this is about a review about the limousine service. When it's all said and done Julian got us back home around 10pm. Our last stop was the volcano. Julian is a family man and took the time to buy his wife and kids souvenirs himself. Loved that. All of us did. Being in Italy for the first time had all of us on edge about trust and being ripped off by everyone. The truth is whatever we paid for was deserved just for the safety we felt with Julian. When you see the military everywhere in Rome it's just such a relief to be in the presence of someone like this who can easily explain things to you so it makes sense. IE why are there no lids on the toilet bowls ?? Well Julian explained why. I can't overstate how much Julian made our trip so awesome !! Julian knows the land , back roads , the restaurants , and was so very patient with a bunch of Americans who made his life really difficult for one entire day. The prices for Julian are half of what a tour bus are and no where near exciting or entertaining. He was a total joy to be with. He is a excellent conversationalist and really funny. ( know what FIAT stands for ? Fix It Again Tony !!! LOLOL ) Trust me when I say if you are new to Rome or thereabouts this is the only company you want to deal with. Thank you Julian from all of us. You made everyone feel safe and you gave us the very best day in Italy we had. Even better than Venice. That Julian with the tie and some other scenic pictures for the drive. Also for the uninformed , make sure you understand that when you have a personal driver his expenses are yours. I'm referring to food , coffee breaks, etc. and hell yes you tip at the end of the ride. That's also what I liked about Julian. He didn't ask for cash upfront and didn't even count it when he drove away. The man just isn't a American at all.

Julian knows the history very well and also did a great job of finding us a place to eat that was where the "locals" go. The food, service, and price were great. As he drove us around he did a great job of explaining where we were and the history. He has a very comforting personality and funny. His Limo was very nice and clean. Julian is also a very good driver and made us feel safe. He was also great about giving us pointers while we were in Rome on how to save time. He knew all the great Coffee/Gelato cafes. He made us laugh and made what was a great vacation even better. It's been a few years since we were in Rome and to this day we speak of Julian and his hospatality.

Imagine a pizza rolled into a cone and then filled with flavorful toppings. I had the Double Cream which consisted of a blend of Cream and Buffalo Mozzarella in addition to Cantabrico Anchovies. Salty, creamy, and a hint of sweetness from the cream. An explosive flavor combo. Next we stopped at the one and only Bonci Pizzarium. If you watched chef table to see Ann Kim, you might have seen this place. Phenomenal pizza by the slice with creative toppings like purple potatoes or squash with sausage. Next we had some traditional Italian pasta at Osteria Da Fortunata. Some red wine paired with Amatriciana. Well spiced and fresh noodles went down way too easy. We finished with charcuterie and tiramisu at La Nicchia Cafe. Many types of cheeses, bruschetta, balsamic, meats, and olive oils. Rounded out by the best tiramisu I've ever had. ____________

We were picked up in a clean huge Mercedes passenger van. Domenico was pleasant to talk to but I had a sense he was more of a reserved person. He did answer questions and make suggestions though when asked. This was charged at a flat rate. Our second scheduled day Rolando was able to make it. This was a day in Rome where we wanted him to essentially chauffeur us through various religious sites. We gave him a list and depending on time he figured out the best way to see what we could. He would literally drop us off in front of any site and wait for us. This was pretty helpful as some of the churches were a bit far from where we were staying in Rome and we would have been zigzagging on public transportation in sweltering June heat. The comfortable air conditioned MBZ minivan was so much easier. Rolando suggested an awesome lunch at La Carbonara (see review). This day was charged at an hourly rate. Our third day was a last minute addition. He had a cancellation so we decided to have Rolando bring us to the Umbria region where there were medieval towns. This included stopping at Assisi, Civita, and Orvieto. These were magnificent to visit. Again Rolando suggested an awesome place to eat in Assisi. This was charged at a flat rate. Rolando takes pride in his vehicles keeping them clean. He stocks them with water for you and the vehicle is WIFI equipped. Rolando is very personable. He gave unsolicited information about places we were passing by so we had not just a driver but a tour guide. I totally recommend him!
