They have done a wonderful job of taking care of three of my family members. They also do grief counseling for the family and friends.

I am an Alive Volunteer. I find it a genuine privilege to be a part.of Alive and take a small part in achieving its mission. It can't be denied that this is not for everyone, but those of us who are comfortable in this space find it an honor to help families who are facing the eventual loss of a loved one. Most are foreign to the experience of dealing with ones final days and we hope to be a comfort and help as you take in the experience, making it just a bit easier during difficult times. Before I began with Alive, volunteering in the not for profit sector was vital in my decision process and I am so glad that I have decided on Alive. The care my mother received was nothing short of beautiful. Every single person introduced themselves and came in to pay their respects. For the majority of the time my mom was there, Kimberly was our RN. She spoke to my mom and always treated her with dignity. She educated us on the process and whatever questions she had, she answered them. When my mother passed we had our time to say goodbye. It was only when I said we were ready that they started the paperwork. They handled everything with so much care and love. I know it's weird to be writing a review but that's how much this place means to me. If you want trust, respect and understanding in your loved ones last moments, this is the place for your family. The staff was very responsive and attentive. The made my mothers last days comfortable and peaceful.

This is in regards to the at home care. Upon trying to find care for our loved one, we were given a lot of promises. Two of those were, we won't allow your loved one to be in pain. IF we can't control your loved ones pain, we will transfer them temporarily to our in patient facility to make sure their pain is under control. They not only didn't control my loved ones pain but, adjusted their medications so they were in MORE pain. We begged for them to take her in patient because she was suffering but they refused. The second thing they promised is that our loved one would be treated like family. That there would be a team of medical professionals making sure that she was taken care of. With compassion and sympathy and support. Not just for her but for the entire family. Nothing could be further from the truth. There was one nurse. Older, short haired lady with glasses who came twice a week. She was very cold, showed no compassion, did not give anyone support, EVER. Her medical judgement was highly questionable. She would switch medications that would make things worse. We would complain. The most she would do is put a doctor on speakerphone. They would bill Medicare a "doctor consultation fee" for the 10 second speakerphone conversation where you were talked at and not to. My loved one was given 3-6 months to live. But, she was a fighter. Towards the end of the predicted "expiration date", she rallied and looked like she was battling back. On that very date the nurse calls and says she needs to meet with the family. We thought it was highly unusual because she never volunteered to come over for anything other than her scheduled two days a week. She shows up and informs us that our loved one "has graduated from hospice". We had no clue what that meant. How can you graduate from hospice? She explained that our loved one appeared to be getting stronger towards the end, not weaker. So, they were there to "congratulate us on our loved one graduating hospice". In other words, abandoning us and our terminally diagnosed loved one because it didn't fit their timeline. She said, "Be sure to call us back when she starts to decline again and we will take her on as a hospice patient." There is ZERO chance that I would have EVER put her back with these people again before she passed away. Let me add that the very night this happened, we had people banging on the door sent by Alive Hospice picking up the oxygen tanks, wheelchair, anything that made her life easier-they took back. Sound like compassionate people to you? I recommend that you don't just read the positive reviews before you hire them. Please pay attention to this review, follow your instincts when things just don't feel right and take care of your terminally ill loved ones. Even if that means removing them from one hospice facility and getting a different at home hospice facility. read more

My husband just passed away after being on home hospice for about three weeks. I definitely recommend Alive Hospice. They are caring, professional, and staffed and equipped to do a good job. We were especially impressed with the loaner iPad that was set up for video calls with a hospice nurse. We used it a number of times after hours and there was always someone there on screen who could help. When my husband was dying, we weren't sure if what he was going through was normal. We set up a video call and the nurse could see my husband and how he was breathing and was able to assure us that what we saw was part of the natural process of the body shutting down. Once, a nurse came out to our house late at night (a nurse is available 24 hours a day) and wound up calling an Alive doctor who had a speaker-phone conversation with my husband. The doctor was extremely kind and good with my husband, who was delusional at that moment. Thanks to him, my husband got a good night's sleep and was refreshed in the morning. The only suggestions I would make are: 1. Encourage the hospice folks to explain what you need to purchase or have on hand -- when they said they would provide supplies, it didn't occur to me that I would need to buy twin-XL sheets and lots of washcloths, hand towels, and bath towels. We also bought our own transfer board, which came in very handy when my husband could no longer stand up. 2. Ask for a physical therapist to visit once to help explain how best to take care of someone who has suddenly become disabled. 3. Take advantage of the wisdom of hospice aides -- those saints who come and attend to your loved one. They know a lot of very helpful things. UPDATE This isn't related to the hospice, but is addressed to those who will use any hospice. After my husband died, I had enough medical equipment and supplies left to fill a car: a wheelchair, rollator, wheelchair ramp, walker, plus tons of supplies like underpads. After searching for a place to donate them, I found a medical equipment and supply ministry run by the Hendersonville Church of Christ that is wonderful. The woman running it when I brought my husband's stuff in knew just who needed certain things -- the wheelchair is going to a woman with three disabled children, the underpads to a woman with MS -- and other things, like the walker, will be available when needed. They loan the equipment out and ask that it be returned to them so it can be used by someone else. Supplies are just given away. read more

My Dad was at their in patient location in 2019 for less than two days before he passed. We were made many promises about the care both my Dad and his family would receive....they were not true. I was promised that he would receive pain meds much faster than the hospital could provide. I tried to schedule the administration of pain meds every four hours as that is when he seemed to need them. The Alive Hospice Nurse refused to schedule meds and said to just call him when they were needed. The first time I requested meds, the nurse came to the room, started getting meds ready, received a phone call and left without administering any meds. He didn't return until 20 minutes later and when I expressed how upset I was, he lashed out at me that someone was dying in another room. I don't think that's a legit reason to leave a living patient in pain. The lack of compassion was alarming. The staff would repeatedly suggest that my Dad was hanging on because I was in the room and told me to take a walk around the facility....I was not going to allow my Dad to die alone. The Medical Director looked at my Dad from afar, said the nurses know what they are doing....and tried to bill professional services for her "visit". During a conversation with a nurse practitioner, she told me that dying isn't painful....disease is painful. While she was likely trying to offer comfort....it did not work on me. Additionally, while my Dad wasn't verbally communicating at that time, when he heard this comment...he raised his eyebrows seeming to indicate, "what do you know about it, lady?" She tried to convince me that "they've done studies" to prove that dying isn't painful. I'm sorry....I don't think that dead people would be able to provide this confirmation. There are more events....but, I will stop it at the ones I've listed. I submitted several complaints to their leadership and the Board of Directors. The only response I received was an offer for counseling....they decided that I was so upset because I had "complicated grief". I wouldn't trust this company with adequate counseling after the lack of care they showed by Dad and me when we needed it most. I pray that they have improved since 2019....fwiw....they had good reviews back then. If you have friends or family using Alive Hospice services, I encourage you to be present as often as you can so you can see first hand how your loved ones are being treated. We all deserve care at the end of life. read more

This review is for 1710 Patterson Road facility. It was God's tender mercy that my dad got transferred to Alive Hospice after being in ER and ICU for six days. I can not thank the staff there enough for their dedication, compassion and genuine love and caring for my dad and so many other patients. I can't imagine how I could have done it without these guardian angels during the darkest hours of my dad's final days. The pain and agony of watching someone you love waste away in slow motion is beyond anyone's imagination. Because of the travel restrictions during Covid my family could not come and I was alone in the room with my dad for 11 days. Death was all around me and I felt the world had deserted me. I was constantly scared and in panic mode especially at night after watching dad for days in ER and ICU then seeing his body change in the most horrific way after removal of life support. It was the smiles, the warm greetings and constant visits of all the nurses, doctor and chaplain during the day and late at night that kept me sane and alive. Words can not express my admiration and respect for what they do for the dying patients and their families. One night on top of the stress of dad actively dying we all had to be evacuated to the hall way due to severe tornado warning. The night shift nurses hustled to move all the patients beds and family members chairs to the hall way. Before the alarm was dismissed and the rush was over one patient died and another was about to die without any family member surrounding her. I would never forget how the sweet nurse ( I believe her name is Sue ) leaned over near the dying lady's face and talked to her so gently while holding her hand. She also tried to connect the family member via FaceTime so they could at least say goodbye to their loved one before it's too late. Everyone of the staff members was always so sweet cheerful and showed so much respect for life. Even the food servers were so kind and thoughtful. I feel very blessed to have chosen this place for my dad's final days. These angelic staff members have really helped to ease my nerve and my dad's pain and suffering through the long dying process. I can never repay the kindness of these amazing people but I want to recommend Alive to anyone who needs care for their loved ones during most difficult time. They genuinely care and are the most courageous and trustworthy people who would do everything to make life and death a little easier for the dying and the families. My father suffered a massive stroke 3/10/2019, after failing 4 swallow tests and was in the ICU before being transferred to Alive Hospice at 1710 Patterson Street on 3/27/2019. Everyone there has provided great comfort and care to my dad during this time. Dad had specific written instructions on no artificial feeding, no forced fluids. Every call I made to the facility was answered, any situations or discomfort my Dad had was conveyed to me. I'm most impressed, despite the sad situation. Update: My father died 4/3/19, RIP. My family recently placed a loved one with Alive Hospice for her last days. I had never been to a hospice and didn't quite know what to expect, but this place is just too phenomenal for words. The facilities are large, updated, and private. The staff is caring, patient, and attentive. My grandmother could not have been at a better place. read more

Alive took care of my mom back in 2014. She was put on hospice 12/22 and died 01/12. So not only did they do a great job, they did it during Christmas/New Years. In response to "gern b.", your review is partly correct. When starting out, you do have a nurse that visits twice a week. However, you also have a social worker, a chaplain, & aides. As my mom declined, the nurse visits increase and someone was always available via phone. I now volunteer with Alive. I can tell you with out a doubt that if your loved one is at any of the Residence facilities they will received outstanding & compassionate care. Hospice nurses, aides are pretty much "Angels on Earth". It always amazes me how they can remain upbeat, positive & genuine while caring for terminally ill patients. read more

This review is not for the facility itself; instead it is for the staff that come when someone is placed in home hospice. That being said, my 93 year old Nana suffered a massive stroke on December 5th. She had been at a SNF having had a blood clot in her right leg. As spirited as she was, the last three and half years have been hard on her little body. Nana was a DNR. She had already decided long ago that she did not want a feeding tube nor fluids. After the stroke, she was unable to swallow so we knew it was a matter of time. Bless her, the stroke left her unable to speak coherently and paralyzed on her right side. That is the physical state she was in when we brought her home. As rough as it was, angels in the form of Alive Hospice nurses and technicians came along to assist. We were immediately at ease. The caring, compassionate staff doted on my little Nana. She was bathed daily, she was repositioned so as not to get bed sores, she was coddled and soothed. As bad off as she was we could all understand her when she would pat the nurse or tech and tell them "thank you". Fast forward to 2:50a Christmas morning.... She took her final breath with my beautiful Mama holding her hand and singing to her. I wasn't there for that moment but I did arrive about twenty minutes later. It wasn't until after my husband and I said our good-byes to the matriarch of the family that we called Alive Hospice. It seems like mere moments later Marie arrived. We all could swear that she descended directly from heaven to guide us through the process. Mama and I were instantly smitten with her. She always works Christmas she told us. And it was also her birthday to boot. She asked if we'd like to have Nana bathed. Yes, yes we would. She was so gentle with her little body. She spoke to her and hummed as she cleaned her up to prepare her to go to the mortuary. As sad as we were, we were just as happy that Marie was there to take care of Nana for a final time. I know I do not have the personality or skill set for this type of work. I thank God that there are people who do. Mere mortals who have this type of compassion and abilities to care for the dying and show the same to the living left behind are angels in my book. And the staff at Alive Hospice took care of my newest angel, Nana, during the end of her earthly journey. read more

I thought I knew something about Hospice until I personally experienced it with a friend in the last part of his life. He was made comfortable and friends and family were welcomed at any time. I am thankful for the caring way everything was done. I am so grateful those who need to be taken care of have a place to go. In this case being home was not an option. Last night my relative said "I want out of here" the hospice nurse is trying to convince us that she's ready to pass. We know her, she wants out of hospice! They lied to her and she's not getting what she was told! They drugged her so much that she's so weak to where she can't leave. She was fine before she went there and when she first got there the hospice nurse, there is no TEAM like they said, said to all of us that we might want to say our goodbyes. My relative said "are you sure?" The hospice nurse is trying to convince us that, that's her asking again. We think she isn't ready to go yet and the hospice is rushing everything! As my fathers health began failing we contacted Alive Hospice to support us. The care they provided was immediate and they did everything they could to make him comfortable until the end. They followed the families wishes and were there to support the family even after my father passed. I would definitely recommend Alive Hospice to others. read more

My sister was at Alive Hospice at the Tri Star Campus. I didn't know what to expect so I stayed with my sister there almost two weeks. Every person that works there is wonderful. The care they give warms my heart , I will forever be thankful to them for helping us get thru the most difficult time in our life. They have to be special to do the work they do. I have nothing but great things to say about Alive Hospice. They were there to help my father during the last days of his life. They made sure he was comfortable and received around the clock attention. They even made sure we, the family, were taken care of and as comfortable as we could be. We did have a slight disagreement with 1 of the nurses one day when we tried to get his pain meds increased but once another nurse came in, she took care of everything for him & us and was very nice while doing it. This was back in April 2014 so I'm sure some of the nurses have come & gone. I would recommend AH to anyone before I would any other place. They even offer full assistance for those who qualify and they won't treat you any different than those who have insurance or are paying privately. It sucks that we all face death at some time but it's great that places like Alive Hospice are there to help and take care of the family as well. We liked the place so much, we donated money to have a brick layed on their sidewalk in my fathers name. Is nice to visit the brick on his life anniversary. Thanks to AH & all the wonderful staff we got to interact with. They truly show they care. read more

I used alive hospice for my terminally ill mother. She wanted to live out her remaining days at home. Alive made all kinds of promises about the TEAM that would help her. No team just a nurse that came to the house twice a week. If your placing someone in hospice facility I'm sure they are great. If you want to bring them home don't waste your time read more

I'm happy that the previous reviewer had a good experience in 2010, but the quality of care at Alive's inpatient units has plummeted over the last 5 years and is now at an all time low. Many nurses have quit, leaving the rest overworked and very stressed out. MDs have also quit, leaving all units inadequately staffed. The current practice is to cover shifts with Residents from local teaching hospitals, but these doctors are almost never trained in palliative or hospice care. There's tremendous pressure from administration, which results in poor moral and high use of agency nurses and nurses aids, but these folks generally don't know what they're doing. As a former employee and also as family of a recent patient, I can't stress highly enough that placing a loved one here is a crap shoot. If you happen to get into a section with a good nurse, you might get adequate care at least on one out of two shifts, but don't count on it. Home hospice is a far better choice if you can manage it---even if you have to hire sitters to cover all needs. If you have to use this facility, ask a lot of questions and have someone at the bedside as much as possible to watch that things are done properly and that your loved one is not over medicated for the convenience of an overworked staff. I'd give them only one star, but a few good nurses and social workers are still there, so I'll give them a star. read more
