It is such a hard thing putting your child in daycare (especially when your child is an infant). I have to say that SHUMPS is a great place and I feel really good about the care my son receives here. There really aren't many options for daycare in Seminole Heights and I called SHUMPS when I was only 5 weeks pregnant to get on the list. I landed on the list 5 months later than I needed to be (due in September 2016 and was on the list for April 2017). That said, a spot ended up coming open much earlier. The price is pretty competitive, but most importantly, my son absolutely LOVES all the employees. They are so sweet to him and they give a personal touch. They do a lot of fun activities for the kids (even a Christmas pageant). I highly recommend SHUMPS to anyone looking for quality childcare in the Heights!

The owner herself is always there and makes sure to ask the parents questions, they are very welcoming as well Ms. Kara, she runs the place very professionally and she makes sure you feel at ease answering all of your questions. We enrolled our 2-year-old at O2B Kids South Westshore and ultimately withdrew him due to ongoing…read moresafety and supervision concerns in his classroom. Over several weeks (October-November), our child was injured multiple times by the same child, including bite marks and other physical incidents. Some of these incidents were documented with incident reports, while others were not. We also personally witnessed aggressive behavior on more than one occasion. I understand that incidents can happen at this age; however, in our experience the behavior occurred often enough to significantly impact the classroom environment. From what was communicated to us by staff at the time, these incidents were affecting multiple children, and the classroom teacher was also struggling. While a behavior plan was reportedly in place, the incidents continued. At one point, we observed the classroom teacher in visible emotional distress due to the situation. We do not fault the teacher at all; she appeared to be doing everything she could under extremely difficult circumstances. Our concerns were with how the situation was handled at the administrative level and the lack of effective intervention to ensure safety for everyone in the classroom. After raising concerns, communication was extremely disappointing. Multiple requests for copies of all incident reports involving our child went unanswered. While some documentation was provided, we did not receive all incident reports or redacted information related to our child despite repeated requests. In addition, a confidentiality issue occurred in which our contact with corporate was shared with another parent. This resulted in that parent confronting me on school grounds in a way that felt inappropriate and upsetting. The ongoing situation caused significant emotional distress for our family and ultimately forced us to remove our child and secure alternative care on very short notice, resulting in financial loss and disruption to our work and family life. I'm sharing this so other parents can ask detailed questions about classroom safety, behavior management, documentation practices, and communication before enrolling. Every child deserves a safe environment, and every parent deserves transparency. The silver lining is that our son is now in a different school where he feels safe and supported. He has told us he loves his new school and does not want to return to what he described as the "mean class" at O2B.

They have programs ranging from infant to pre-k and everything in between. It is a brand new building and they have some excellent teachers. They use the Flex style of teaching which most children and parents really like. As someone with an advanced degree in Education, I am hypercritical of schools and curriculum, I examine curriculum and teaching effectiveness all day in my career. The school is definitely Montessori enough, Montessori schools provide students with freedom within limits, and maybe that seems unruly to someone who has no idea what Montessori even is. The school is better priced that 7 of the schools I looked at in the area, only Primrose was more expensive. The school has a few entrances, all of which are locked by key and only a few members of the school have the keys. It is extremely safe. The owners of this school put me at ease. The school itself is immaculate and the outside areas are pristine. The communication is incredible, I can always follow up if I have a question or concern and get immediate feedback and help. My daughter goes in and comes out happy every single day. She has bloomed into a wonderful little human and at each checkup her doctor is amazed at how much she knows and does for under 3. I give full credit to the teachers and owner of the school for that. The teachers are a mix of backgrounds, some speak English, some speak Spanish, some might even speak more languages- I don't really know. I absolutely love the diversity and inclusion of the school and I couldn't be happier. My daughter did go to a different school and it had many of the same aspects but my daughter wasn't happy. The owners and teachers of this school are incredible and it shows in the kids that go there.
