Highland Hall Waldorf School - Nursery children play outside a lot!

The antidote to hustle culture--for kids AND parents…read more Highland Hall has been transformative for our family. In a world of stress, hurry, and noise, this school pushes back hard. My ECC student is thriving in their play-based program, and I'm equally impressed by what I see in the grades. What stands out: Teachers are genuinely cared for (you can feel it in how they show up) Outdoor learning is central, not an afterthought Learning is experienced through hands, heart, and mind (and truly offline and not through a screen) Warm, open community that walks the talk Upper school students are bright, engaged, and have real relationships with each other Academic excellence through curiosity, not pressure The slower pace in early years is intentional--less rote memorization, more wonder and deep learning. It teaches families that thriving happens through joy and community, not grinding. Don't let tuition stop you from exploring. The financial assistance program is robust and real. Schedule a tour and see if Highland Hall is right for your family. For us, it's been worth every penny.

The preschoolers help make organic homemade snacks, paint, play, and sing. The teachers genuinely care about the children and are invested in their growth and joy. Highland Hall has beautiful traditions (lantern walk, winter faire) with many opportunities for parents to get involved. We became parents during the pandemic and it has been life changing to feel a sense of community.

That made me realize how much teacher-led, paper-and-pen instruction helps students focus and learn. As a transfer student, my daughter was warmly supported by teachers, her advisor, and the staff. The community is small, caring, and dedicated. I also joined a Board of Directors meeting before enrolling and was impressed by the school's organization and forward-thinking leadership. VIPHS reports an 81% college-acceptance rate, compared with under 60% at many nearby public high schools. The average class size is about 20 with a 15:1 student-teacher ratio, versus 30-35 students and ratios in the high 20s elsewhere. VIPHS is a close-knit, welcoming community that genuinely cares for students and prioritizes personal attention and academic excellence. Plus, drop-off and pick-up are so easy, a small but real bonus for families!

The price is very fair ($40/month - with your trial class free of charge). The classes are held in the nursery rooms of a church and they have tons of fun things for kids to see, do, and explore. Some of the highlights include: A ship playground out back, a large sandpit area, ride along toys, bubble pits, a painting area, a dress up area, a reading nook, toy cars and dollhouses, play phones, and a crafts area. I really appreciate Miss Gretchens attention to detail she is very good at interacting with the kids and each class comes with a small snack time (apples, pretzels, cheese) and water in a little cup (to help kids learn how to use a cup; which is genius and something I didn't think of). The moms/grandmas/caregivers who come here are also very nice. Everyone is down to earth and non-judgmental which is something that I really appreciate. We have tons of fun here and I am really glad that I found it!

We've been a part of this school from Kindergarten through the middle school years. Heschel felt…read morelike a natural transition to our nursery school and synagogue Temple Judea in Tarzana. Heschel has always felt like a second home to us. Pre-pandemic, during and after, their policies and response to global circumstances and Jewish lives have always aligned with our values. They have sustained a high standard in education for over 50 years and I have no doubt they will continue to thrive. One thing I love about the Heschel community is their outreach to engage with the local community beyond its Jewish roots. I feel this is an important quality to instill in our children's values. By embracing and celebrating our Jewish heritage and how we navigate amongst the rest of the world as well; as teaching tolerance goes both ways. I've even heard friends who attend other schools comment on how nice and well behaved the Heschel kids are when it comes to playing sports with our students. The school has many volunteer opportunities for parents and grandparents even. Generations Day is something my daughter's grandparents look forward to every year. So much that her one grandparent from Connecticut will make the trip every time it occurs. I appreciate the policies on all of the technical things as well, including dress code (not uniform based school) and tech use at school. Heschel recognizes that while it's important to build a sense of individuality, they recognize the dangers of social media and tech and put in policies that are relevant to the school. They've taken time to teach our students about social media safety and even "how to say an apology" in their Judaic studies courses. Heschel, as a parochial school, remains current to the times both academically and socially.

Heschel is an incredible school. The community that the school fosters is very special. My kids have made amazing friends and are always looking forward to being at school. Mr. Goar shows favoritism towards certain students and neglects other students. He tries to focus on those that are troubled and give them special privileges rather than punishments. Mr. Goar is overall an unlikeable person and his connection to the students is very weak. Each time that there is an issue between two students, rather than hearing out both sides and figuring out the truth, he jumps straight to punishment, even for an innocent student.
