Vibe: I stayed at the hotel so was able to see how Alibi changes depending on the day. On Friday night and Saturday, the place is lively but otherwise it's pretty dead on other days. Before 10pm, they play music quietly and you are able to talk and have conversation without too much trouble and there is no dress code. After 10pm they no longer allow sandals, they crank up the music to be like a club but the dancing area is pretty small. The theme is a bit of a gimmick but it's cool. They have a nice outdoor area as well with cool lighting. Drinks: I got two cocktails. I like my drinks sweeter. These were great. Food: The pizza is real bad. It's like a frozen pizza quality. You can order it if you are hungry but do not come here for food. This would be 1 star for a food joint. read more

My friends and I went here last week and it was a lot of fun. Make reservations because it is hard to get into. Everyone was really good about wearing masks, but it is dark and loud when we went at 9:30 so it's hard to hear anyone. With that said though, the dj played great music and the staff were friendly and pretty fast. We didn't have dinner here, but ordered chips and guac. They have two separate items "chips and guac" and "chips and pico de gallo". Note: the chips and guac has some pico de gallo on it, so I think it was the right choice. It was a small portion, but good. We got some fun drinks. They have some drinks with ghost pepper tequila like ghosted and spicy inmate which were really good. The vibe here is really interesting with exposed brick walls and pictures of celebrities and their reason for going to jail. Fun, trendy little bar in the Liberty Hotel. We actually found this place after finding out that the prison scene with Billy Connolly in The Boondock Saints was filmed here. It was originally the Boston County Jail and was later remodeled into a hotel. For food starting with the pizzas, they were all very tasty, not too heavy, perfect finger food for sharing. The duck fat fries were absolutely wonderful & delectable. What could have been a smidge better was the Caesar salad because even though I understand the desire to redesign something common, deconstructing the salad by serving whole, giant romaine leaves is inconvenient & awkward in my opinion! If you're part of the LGBTQIA+ community, do not come here - somebody in VIP told us that he doesn't want to see "f***ots" dancing near him & proceeded to have EVERY security guard come and yell at us to get away simply for being gay and making this "VIP" dude uncomfortable. We pushed back and told them to move everybody else out of the area if we couldn't be there (they made up a lie that nobody could dance in that area) and they refused to make anybody else leave. This happened with at least 5 different security guards and they wouldn't leave us alone until we felt extremely uncomfortable and had to leave and ask for the manager. This was our first stop of the night, so we were entirely sober, and ended up being the last because we were made to feel extremely uncomfortable. The manager, Ben, tried to remedy the situation by offering us a free shot, but then insisted on taking us to the other side of the club - this didn't help us feel more comfortable at all because he was simply trying to get us into a different area when we should've been made to feel comfortable in any part of the club. Would give 0 stars if possible, but 1 will do. Please do not feel safe at this club as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community because non of the security guards have any respect for you if you aren't VIP or straight. Such a cute and fun bar, there weren't many people there when we were but I loved the decor on the walls and thought it had a great atmosphere. The tribute to it having once been a jail was also really cool. Our drinks came out quickly and the staff was all super friendly. We came here because of the cool concept of a restaurant in the old Charles street jail. Unfortunately that was really just a gimmick and the authentic pieces of brick and jail cells components were overshadowed by the tacky and poorly thought out decor. The drinks were priced like some of the most upscale restaurants in Boston, and all sounded good on the menu, but were half-heartedly executed and very heavy on the alcohol. Of course, that is better than the alternative, but for the price I would also like my drink to taste good. Food was mediocre and, again, over priced for the serving size and quality. With that being said, three stars I don't think the size, decorations, and overall vibe warrant a $450 minimum at the outside seating area on the weekends. Food and drinks are average and overpriced. Video booths where we got to shoot our own crazy wild commercial, a confessional corner where a sexy seductive women asks you your darkest secrets and gives you a drink to wash away your sins (weird concept I know but it was all in good fun). A (what was suppose to be) tattoo artist which was fun but last min I heard they couldn't get it approved so he ended up doing semi-permanent tattoos which was still a good idea. The fires were lit outside on the patio on a beautiful night, I definitely want to check this place out again. Good atmosphere, great vibes, no complaints at all besides with all this free alcohol I wish we could've ordered food cuz trying to track down the waitress with the apps was merely impossible. My wife and I went to Alibi on Saturday night after having dinner at Scampo and were incredibly disappointed with the experience. The hostess was very nice and sat us inside near the bar. It took a few minutes before someone took our order, but that was fine. The staff was dealing with a wedding party out on the patio. Our first round was lovely. My wife's drink was well balanced and I ordered a simple scotch. Our bar snack of hummus is where things started going poorly. The hummus itself was delicious, great texture and flavor. The bread it came with was just plain white bread, like something from the inside of a roll. It was untoasted and chewy. I get that it exists as a cheap thing you order so that the bar can function, but that's no excuse for poorly thought out food. We weren't ready to go back to our room so we ordered another round. I got another scotch and my wife ordered the same cucumber lemonade drink. Her drink arrived and it was awful. It was overwhelmingly vodka and a little cucumber. She let our server know and asked for another. The second arrived and it was clearly just lemonade and cucumber. It was nothing like the first drink. The question now is "Why didn't you speak with a manager?" and that is because the manager was busy having loud conversations about what tables got comped what from a table behind us to the bartender. He would then wander past our table with a wrinkled shirt untucked and touch other tables, but never once acknowledged us. My faith in getting help was pretty low and after the petty redo on my wife's cocktail we were done. Compared to the lovely Liberty Bar upstairs Alibi is in a different league. This place is dependent on a kitschy interior and trendy cocktails. Hotel guests would be better to stay upstairs if they want a pleasant bar experience. read more

Visiting the Liberty Hotel and its respective bars has been on my bucket list of things to do while living in Boston for the past two years. I finally had a chance to visit the "Glamour Slammer" for my birthday this past Saturday night. My roommates and I started at the open area bar on the second floor. I'm not sure if this bar has a specific name or not, but I enjoyed the extremely high vaulted ceiling and the fact that it wasn't too crowded. After spending some time at this bar, we made our way downstairs to Alibi. Unfortunately Alibi left much to be desired. I'm not sure if it's because there was a private party that took up most of the space or the fact that the weather wasn't nice enough for the patio to be open. All I know was the bar was too crowded and there wasn't a whole lot going on. Thank goodness there wasn't a cover charge because I would've been sorely disappointed. I think the concept of the Liberty Hotel and it's prison-themed bars and restaurants is very cool. I just think the execution could be a little stronger (no pun intended). read more

It's a decent bar. The prices are high due to location and the type of venue but this place will likely never go out of business. They locked down a location RIGHT NEXT TO MGH. So not only is there the fancy hotel but they have a constant influx of stressed out medical professionals who need a drink. The Alibi offers a nice amount of outdoor seating but it is not guaranteed so go early if you want a space. The staff are fine. I think they were a bit stressed out when I went and I'm sure they have to deal with lots of demanding people. It's definitely a nice place to hang out and they keep it pretty clean. We popped in for drinks before heading out to dinner. Sat ourselves at a very low table with a big wooden table, small bench and a few foot stools. Not very comfortable. There were 5 of us. I had to finally get up and hunt her down. I told her we were seated long before the couple she just waited on and asked asked her if we seated at a table we shouldn't have, or if there was another waitress responsible for our table. She said "oh, I didn't see you, where are you sitting"? REALLY. You didn't se the party of 5 adults. Hmm. I am totally over these hip Places where the SERVERS act like they are doing you a favor to wait on you. ITS YOUR JOB HONEY - you are employed here, snap out of it. I am always very pleasant to staff wherever we go. I'm never rude and never treat them disrespectfully I treat everyone the way I want to be treated. IM NOT SHOWING UP TO PAY you TO BE DISRESPECTED. There are literally 100s of places to go within walking distance. The 3 for overall rating is pretty accurate. As a side note- we have been coming here for years. Alibi Bar is located on the ground floor of the Liberty Hotel, which is historic and well known for being a prison once upon the time. We were greeted by a jaded, grumpy manager when us girls came into the bar. You would think he would be a little nicer to us cute girls, umm no! It's interesting when a waitress doesn't know the menu very well. When I asked for her recommendations, she gave me the generic answer of "All of em' are pretty good", which is not helpful at all. If the staff isn't excited over their own restaurant and menu, how can they expect me to be?! In the end, I ordered their 'Cold Hand Cuke'-vodka, muddled cucumber & mint, and pineapple. Their drinks were strong ($13 on average) and standard. It wasn't too sweet, which I liked...like I wrote earlier, the drink is standard, but nothing out of the ordinary. We also ordered a magherita pizza, which was also just A-OK since the crust overwhelmed half the pizza...it reminded me of a frozen pizza at home, but not as bad. It is one par above, sad huh? PS, our pizza came out 10x faster than our drinks. How many of you can say, you've had a cocktail at a former jail? Checking that off the to do list! Alibi Bar and Lounge is located at the upscale Liberty Hotel. The ambiance is kept true to its former self: brick walls, jaill cells are still intact and famous B&W photos of criminals line the walls. The lighting is kept dim for couples on date nights but there's also a large seating area for small group get togethers. The back patio is where its at in the summer time, be sure to check it out. I had the bartender make me a Paloma. I was in a tequila kind of mood that night and wasn't interested in their cocktail menu at all, most are cleverly named and echoing the jail theme. (its also very overpriced at $14 - $16 per drink!) Nevertheless, I had a fun time here drinking it up with the fam and if I ever land in jail, I have an alibi: WINNING! I've been here 3 times- two times for after-work drinks/snacks, and once for a larger group happy hour. I really love the patio; the interior has a cool, old jail, mugshots vibe though I do prefer the patio area with its lovely couches, string lights and greenery. The drinks are good though pricey (~16$ or more for a cocktail) and they apparently change fairly frequently, as last night they were no longer serving one of the drinks I liked best from previous visits (Murder she wrote). The food is pricey and I would not recommend coming to eat a full meal necessarily given how expensive it would get. Sharing a pizza between 4 provided us with a decent bar snack and was sufficient since I'd had a late lunch prior. The service was better when I was in a smaller group and pretty slow and spotty in the larger group, which I suppose is not abnormal. Though website says "casual chic" attire on weekend nights, we had people show up in scrubs without an issue on Friday night :). My parents came to visit Boston for a few days, and I decided to take them to drinks at the Liberty Hotel since I work right next door. I arranged to meet them after work- at 5pm on a Wednesday. Alibi doesn't open until 5pm so it was pretty quiet when we walked in, only two other tables were occupied. The decor was interesting (jail bars/doors, brick walls, celebrity mugshots on the wall and on the coasters). Some of the backless chairs looked a bit uncomfortable- the furniture definitely had a "lounge" feel to it. It got progressively busier, and by the time we left around 6/615, it was somewhat crowded and noisy. We ordered a bottle of bubbly, 2 cocktails- Rehab and a Cosmo- and the truffle polenta french fries. The Rehab was surprisingly good- it had a mix of Stoli Orange, St. Germain and bubbly. The yummy truffle fries came with about 10 fries, but they were quite large- almost breadstick-like. We also saw a few delicious looking pizzas pass by us. The cocktails run about $12-13, the french fries were $9, and the pizzas ran about $15-17. The waitresses were all fairly pretty and dressed in black. They also all had a bit of attitude- a few times we were trying to get her attention as she walked by, and it seemed like she was purposefully not looking at us. It seemed like it had the ability to get pretty douchey as the night went on, and the service wasn't too great. But the cocktails and food are tasty, and the space is different and interesting. Alibi is someplace I'd go at least once (just to check it out) for after work drinks and food, if you don't care too much about price. read more

Most clienteles here are hotel guests or MGH workers. The location is great - just across the street from the Charles MGH station. There is also an outdoor patio to sit at when it's not freezing out. The interior is cute and to the theme of former prison. However, that's about it for the stuff they've got right. The big thing they messed up is the drinks. They are boring and not mixed all that well - even a simple classic cocktails tasted like water - there are many reasons that can be, reaffirming what I've also heard from others, that people don't come here for the drinks. Fun, lively spot for drinks on a weekend. The place gets pretty full around 11 PM on Friday or Saturday night, and music is generally top 40. The decor is very interesting with all the celebrity mug shots on the walls. I often bring out-of-town guests here since it is pretty centrally located. During the warmer months, the patio out back is really nice, but it can get very crowded towards the end of the night. Also, recently discovered that there is another bar on the 2nd floor lobby of the Liberty hotel, which had awesome music to dance to. I work just down the street from here. I ride my bike to and from work everyday and I've never noticed this old prison refurbished into a hotel before. I met up with a friend on a warm Sunday night and we sat outside on cushioned couches and ordered martinis. I had the Dirty Harry which is basically your typical dirty vodka martini with blue cheese stuffed olives. The olives were not so appetizing they looked more like cat food stuffed olives and didn't have that fresh blue cheese taste. We also ordered white truffle Parmesan fries served in a huge bento box, warm goat cheese cakes, and mushroom and ricotta pizza. The food was outstanding, but the best part of the evening was being able to sit outside under Boston skies during twilight. To continue down the prison theme, we got our bill along with a postcard with Mick Jagger's mug shot. Nice touch. read more

No silverware was given to us, they forgot about us for over 20 mins each time. Got one water refill. Our dinner took 2.5 hours but could've been shortened to 1.5 hours if we didn't have to call and ask for a server to assist us. The food was fine. The Cesar salad was incredibly basic and bland. The lobster risotto was ok but the sauce broke so you could see the butter pooling on top. If you don't want to serve your outside patio tables, don't advertise the patio as being open. read more

There are entertaining mug shots on the walls, and the dark lighting is appropriate for this type of bar. Where it falls apart is in the bartenders. On a Friday night, there should be more than two bartenders working to ensure you don't have to wait 10 minutes for a simple drink. The flat screen TV above the bar was set to Dr. Oz, which was a stark and disappointing contrast to the pricey drinks and dimly-lit interior. The service was also sub-par for the two of us, although admittedly we weren't dressed in formal attire like most of the clientele. The good thing is that if you know the bartenders cousin, she'll comp you drinks and shots while the other customers have to wait for the over-priced bill. read more

I think that the hotel should have at least one of the bars having a more casual, less expensive atmosphere, but hey, it is Boston and it was fun. My only complaint is that the bartenders seemed a bit standoffish...I was turned off by them as their attitude was more like they were WAY cooler than us, and therefore, wanted to ignore us. Alibi is a poor "excuse" for a bar / lounge or eatery. I'm surprised because the Lyons Group typically has a good sense of it's environment and it's target market. First off, being told no or "can't" shouldn't be one of the first words you hear from the hostess. In hospitality there are ways around saying that, be it "let me get my manager" or... something else. It's freezing out, a customer and his / her adult children staying at the hotel is someone you WANT to keep inside and not drive them out into the cold. Can someone say Captive Audience or Low Customer Acquisition Costs? Business is not their strong suit. Charging high prices for sliders and drinks are. Not listening to their customer isn't their strong suit but repeating what the customer can't have is. That's a steady decline for lost revenue. Case in point. While asking what beers and making an inside joke to my wife about Michelob Ultra (no, we don't drink it) the bartender comments a lot of people ask for it but we don't have it. Duh.. Dawn breaks on Marble Head. So maybe you SHOULD carry it. Sliders are expensive, even by Boston food restaurant prices. 4 for $20 and served on plastic plates. Plastic plates like you're the hired help at a function. No glass offered for the beer, ONLY mandated when you leave the bar to take the beer up to the lobby. Even on private jet flights you get glass dishes and glass serving platters, for $40 worth of sliders I should have been served on something better than Chinet strong plasticware. While the atmosphere rocks, the tude and rules lack taking this place to even 2 stars. With SO many places both inside the hotel and steps outside the hotel this place (and I stay at the attached hotel QUITE often) has received the last C note I'll drop here. If the goal of the Lyons group is to always exceed guest expectations in hospitality they not only fell way short with me and my family but have a long up hill climb to earn back my entertainment dollar at any of their other locations for now on. read more
