Second, I was required to prepay for a 'pulp vitality' test because I was told that insurance might not cover it. The insurance ultimately denied the claim, stating that according to accepted dental clinical standards, this service should not be performed on the same day as a root canal. This was frustrating, as I relied on the office's professional judgment when agreeing to the procedure. Lastly, during my treatment, there was a significant amount of casual conversation and joking among staff. This made me feel overlooked and uneasy during what was already a stressful procedure. I hope the office considers improving patient communication, treatment planning transparency, and overall patient experience.

A root canal completed by Dr Distel came back with face swelling and intense pain 10 years later…read more When I visited the office for a reevaluation, I was shamed by the front desk staff that the root canal failed because I waited a year to get the final crown (10 years ago). I sought a second opinion at Renovo, and when they reviewed Dr Distel's recent imagery, the doctor spotted a root that was not cleared out and filled during the root canal Dr Distel performed. (So he missed it twice - once 10 years ago, and again when I came in with pain). This mistake led to a serious infection causing bone loss in my jaw and countless rounds of antibiotics, time off work, and pain. I went in for retreatment at Renovo to have the missed canal cleared out, only to discover the entire tooth was now compromised and was told I needed an oral surgeon for extraction. In total, I paid for 2 root canals, a surgical extraction, and anesthesia costs not covered by insurance before it was all said and done. Oh, and I lost the tooth. Please, avoid this endodontist at all costs.

First I want to say thank you to the entire staff at Renovo. Aside from having to wait several…read moreweeks to fit into their busy schedule, EVERYTHING was perfect!!! I now understand WHY their appointment book was packed with patients for weeks. From the moment we arrived until the time my daughter and I left, we were absolutely amazed and pleased with the level of professionalism, state of the art equipment, and the patient focused customer care. This experience all started with being referred to McHenry Dental Specialists from our general dentist for my daughter's large cavity. She was referred for a root canal but the Endodontist told us he couldn't do it because the roots hadn't fully grown. He recommended that we simply extract the tooth since the decay was so large. Next, we contacted my daughter's Orthodontist to have them remove the brace on the tooth in preparation for extraction. They told us, "although we respect the Endodontist's recommendation, we really need to do whatever we could to try and salvage the tooth". So, we sought a second Endodontist's opinion (and that's where Renovo comes into the story). I explained our situation to Alan Commet (doppleganger to actor Stephen Merchant), who introduced himself by name and not by "doctor". Soon, they were off taking their own xrays of the cavity stricken tooth (using a hand-held scanner similar to ones you'd see at Sam's Club). Within seconds (literally), Alan had an alternative plan for my daughter's tooth. He told us, "While we can't do a root canal, we certainly can save the tooth without having to extract it. I'm surprised to hear that you were told it needed to be pulled. I'm even more surprised that the other Endodontist didn't give you other options. We can do a procedure called an 'apexo-genesis', then fill in the remaining cavity the traditional way." Ummmmm, whaaaaat? Apexo-who? He proceeded to say, "Instead of rescheduling the procedure weeks from now (again, they're really busy), I will just fit her in today so you don't have to come back. We'll just get it over with. It'll only take me 25-30 minutes." He explained what the procedure entailed to my daughter (yes, to my daughter instead of me). He then said to both of us, "Any questions?" I loved that he directed EVERYTHING to her and made her feel her decision was all that he was looking for (not mine). It was so professional of him. Naturally, she/we said yes and his staff immediately started making contact with our insurance. Within minutes (no kidding...minutes), we had a full estimate of the damage. After all the xrays, anesthesia, drilling, etc. we would owe $156 out-the-door. WHAT??? I didn't have to sell my first born or give up my left kidney??? "WHERE DO I SIGN?" I told the office staff member. Soon, my daughter was kicked back in the chair getting all numbed up. He loaded her up generously and wasn't trying to be stingy. Before, during, and after, he would show his concern for her comfort. It was VERY reassuring for me and my daughter later verbalized to me how grateful she was of his concern. In true fashion, he was done with the procedure in just under 30 minutes. He took pictures during each phase of the procedure. At the completion of the procedure, he told us he would send all the pictures as well as a copy of the full report, the same one he would send to our general dentist, to our email. He went over some simple post-procedural instructions, told us he'd like to see us in 1 year for follow-up on the tooth's root development, and off we went. As a medical professional myself, I cannot stress how wonderful of an experience this was. Not only did they give my daughter what she needed, they gave her what she deserved...respect, professionalism, easy-to-understand descriptions of the procedure, sensitivity, honesty ("the shot will hurt but I'll be quick")...the whole package. He treated her as if she was his own child, intermittently stopping to ask her, "Any pain?" "Are you ok?" "Do you need anything?" "Would you like a break?" "Do you need suction?" In an industry where customer service should be the focus, the entire staff of Renovo was SPOT ON!!! I'd give them top honors in patient focused care. (I have had cleanings every 6 months my whole life as my teeth are very important to me.) The hygienist Carol was amazing. Friendly, professional and welcoming. After my cleaning and x-rays, in walks Amanda Henry... unprofessional and intimidating....even though I did need some catching up with my dental work she couldn't bring herself to present it in a positive way so that I would not be overwhelmed. She was 'astonished' at all the work that needed to be done and said she would not trust the work of any other dentist and that my crowns all needed to be redone. I was gut punched and felt I must have done a terrible job of taking care of my teeth. Curious about her next approach, I signed up for the consultation. (They have a conference room right there in the office where they regularly meet with their patients to present the thousands of dollars for their treatment plans) The office manager presented the treatment plan which was $24,000. The dentist Amanda was only present for the first few minutes to once again tell me she had not seen such a bad case. Then the 'office manager' proceeded to tell me they were going to redo crowns in six phases in groups of 2's and 3's. They offer sedation as I would be more comfortable since I would be in the chair for several hours as her staff would do a lot of the work and she would be present for some of the work. I had to ask as we went down the list for her to explain the problem and the work that was going to be done on each tooth....had to ask the office manager.....I was told this treatment couldn't wait and should be done at once....they have financing available!! I have since been accessed by a different dentist and have had one cavity fixed with one crown to fix...nothing else urgent. Please do not put yourself through this...dentistry gouging at its best.
