Finding a qualified, reputable, and honest auto repair facility is of paramount importance. I had taken my 2016 Mini Cooper Countryman to the local Mini Dealership for an oil change last year, and they recommended a long list of repairs, some of which were absolutely bogus and listed as such in the Mini service bulletins that are readily available online. A few months later it was time for my next oil change, and a 140k mile service, so I went on the hunt for a local, honest auto shop that specialized in Mini Coopers. Based on the reviews online, I found Alex's Auto Haus in Midvale. They did a fantastic job with my 140k mile service, and came back with some additional recommendations. When I picked up the vehicle, they took the time to go through each of the recommendations, physically showed me why I needed new MacPherson struts, showed me the crack in my windshield wiper fluid bottle and the leak in my coolant reservoir bottle, and how dirty my air filter was. And, they did a compression check on my engine to ensure the car was worth investing money to repair it, in lieu of simply trading it in. And, even more encouraging, they did not recommend any of the bogus repairs the Mini dealership tried to sack me with last year. Honesty. Integrity. Technical expertise. Great customer service. And a job well done. My Mini Cooper is back on the road, and good for for many miles, and months to come. My lord did I dodge a bullet with this place. I have never felt compelled to write a review for a business, but the dishonesty, incompetence and price gouging of this place is remarkable. I almost got over charged by 25k. I called Alex's Autohaus to get a price quote to have some brake and suspension upgrades and a couple fluid services. Initially when I had called, the lady who I spoke with wasn't sure if they installed adjustable shock absorbers. Should have been the first red flag. I was then transferred over to one of the mechanics to talk about the upgrades I had requested, which were brand specific. The mechanic seemed to know a little more, but still seemed very unsure about what parts I was requesting. Additionally, when I told him my vehicle, which is a 991, he thought that was a Cayman. I reaffirmed with him that they do indeed do this kind of work and i was assured that they had done many installs like the one I was requesting on Porsches in the past. I receive a quote later that night for just shy of.... FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS. As in $50,000.00 or an average persons yearly salary to have brakes, shocks, and suspension arms, and coolant replaced on a 911. Not only was the quote about 30k beyond what was verbally quoted, he also decided to quote me for a different brand of brakes. This is where this story gets awful. I called the mechanic again and asked what the differences were between the brakes that were quoted, versus the brakes I requested and he had NO IDEA. I tried looking up the differences myself, but I was only able to find brake sets that were thousands of dollars cheaper from Brembo. I assumed I was finding the wrong part. The mechanic assured me again the Brembo brakes were good, but expensive and they would fit OEM wheels and again reaffirmed had done these types of projects before. He had sent me a link with the brakes from Brembos website and immediately, in big, bold red text it says: "Factory 18 inch wheel will not fit over these calipers. You must install 19 inch wheels or larger." These guys were going to charge me 50 thousand dollars and then come back and tell me my wheels wouldnt fit on the car. To add icing to the cake, I discovered I wasn't looking at the wrong parts before. They were just marking the brakes up by 10,000 dollars. Yes, 10k mark up on BRAKES. Brakes that would not fit on my car. The mechanic lied to me and said they were $5,000 per corner and you can literally purchase the whole kit online for a retail price of $4600 for the front brakes, and $3,800 for the rear. While all this was occurring, I had received a price quote from Makes and Models, another shop but in the Salt Lake area. The price came out to twenty thousand dollars less, and they managed to get the correct brakes on the quote and he advised me I did not need some of the items I was quoted, and that every item I was quoted, was marked up over $1,000 on every single job. I am gathering these people couldn't point out a Porsche in a parking lot, let alone be trusted to work on one. And if you're unfortunate enough to have Derrick as your mechanic, bring a suitcase full of cash to pay for all the wrong parts he's going to order for you. I will be very sure that all the guys at my Porsche club are made aware of the theft this business attempts. It looks like from the other reviews this isn't a one time thing. After looking at a quote to have a key fob replaced and seeing a $600 figure accompanied with $100 in hazardous waste I decided against the key fob replacement. I also took a look at some stage 1 tuning costs. $899 for my engine tune, $699 for the transmission tune, which seemed reasonable. They then would charge $400 to install a tune for the engine and transmission. I repeat. $400.00. I had seen people install tunes before, but I had never done one myself. Inquire about the time and you will be told it takes about an hour to do the tune. In addition to charging $400 for installing the tune, the hazardous waste fee of $100 was tacked on as well After declining to have them tune my vehicle, I checked around for other tunes. I get on Integrated Engineering's web page and ask them some questions about their tune. As you can see on their website, the mobile flashing tool is $179.99 and it states that you can do the engine and transmission tunes in minutes. Not hours. I also discovered that the stage 1 transmission tune is FREE and INCLUDED in the stage 1 engine and I was quoted $699 for the tune and $200 to install it. I ended up doing the tune myself in about 20-30 minutes time. I didnt have to purchase a transmission tune, $400 in tuning fees, and $100 in other fees. I saved $1100. I don't have a problem with business making money. But I would have been charged over $1,000 for pressing about a dozen keys on a cell phone. read more

They shifted management about 2 years ago. The new manager has zero class and zero customer service knowledge. He makes unfounded claims constantly. I'll share just a few with thousands I've spent on their technicians programming and never did solve the problem after months. I was told the issue was not allowing my engine swap on an S7 Audi to start the engine because of my head unit inside the vehicle which is $5500 new. I asked why not purchase one off eBay for $350? The manager (wish I knew his name but don't) said that they aren't able to be programmed. I said that's odd considering the unit in the car is a programmed used unit and was done by the Layton Audi dealer. It wasn't the issue anyways. After spending $4500 worth of programming and them trial and erroring everything under the son including telling me that it could be my suspension modules........... Now think about that for a moment...... My suspension modules will keep the car from starting? So that's another couple thousand new and the list goes on. I could publish their notes and would shock everyone at the insanity of the modules that they claimed "could" be the issue and we just need to work through them one by one. $20k later in parts above the already overpriced programming which didn't accomplish a thing, I would have still had a car that doesn't run. I finally took it to Layton Audi who knew the car and JP the service manager took care of me as always. $900 later the car was running perfectly, he fixed numerous other codes that Alex Auto Haus created, changed an air bag and programmed it and had it ready. So tell me how a dealer with what people assume are always going to overbill you, is more efficient and cost a fraction of what this place does. They put an APR Stage 3 on my car two years ago. When I decided to change the engine to an actual RS7 engine, they assured me that they would just do a reflash on it for the reflash price of I believe $349. I've been told that multiple times and it was planned when the car was in for programming the engine and they had it in their notes to flash the motor to an RS7 flashing before completed. Today, they claimed I need an ECU that is the same year as the engine.... a 2016 rather than a 2013 where RS7's didn't come out until 2014. I said that isn't what APR said to me straight from them when I decided to make the change and that as well the dealer said that the programming would take on the 13 because its the same as the 14 - 16 ecu part numbers. Therefore its all compatible and once again the manager stating I need to purchase another several thousand dollar ECU from Audi to make it work is entirely incorrect and doesn't have a clue what he's talking about. I don't usually write reviews but the way this guy acts when you walk in the front door is nothing short of arrogance with no care whatsoever about what you need or don't. Under his management, I have no idea how they haven't gone out of business but seeing their 2.7 ratings explains everything. I'm assuming he will be looking for work soon enough. Don't take your car to these guys. Once they cherry picked an engine out of my truck and the entire thing fell over. Then I had to fight with them to fix the broken parts even though the engine had a bad crank, didn't mean the other parts weren't useable. After leaving their shop today being told that there is no way to program my car correctly with APR and that even if they did, they wouldn't honor what I was told all along and be charged a couple hundred dollar reflash, they told me I'd have to do the ECU first and then pay them another $1600 plus and start over with the programming. I called around and found another dealer who is absolutely honoring the reflash price and was very pleasant and agreed with the dealer that if the ECU is currently running the engine, then it must be communicating effectively and therefor will hold the program I went in to have done quickly and leave for the day. My apologize for the long winded response to these arrogant men who treat clients like dirt. Another item to contend with is that the parking is so bad that I've picked up my car twice in the past with car dents on it from doors being opened up into it. I took video the last time to show there was no damage before since the car at that time had one ding and one ding only and it was from the last time I left it with them. Another time it appears something else hit behind my door and they wouldn't take responsibility for it. I'd find another shop to work with. These guys will rip you off and its highly doubtful you will even drive away with it repaired. I have wasted literally thousands of dollars with this company with no results. I hope they are out of business soon. Car repair shops have a bad enough stigma attached to them when there are some very good and honest mechanics. These guys are neither. About a month ago I had what I initially thought was a minor problem with my GL 450 Mercedes. I was referred to Alex's Autohaus and decided to give them a try. According to their diagnostics, both turbochargers needed to be replaced along with the lower and upper gaskets in the oil pan, plus the valve cover. I was told that in order to do these repairs the'd have to take the engine out. The estimate came to a shocking $15,341.50. After I paid $400.11 for diagnostics I left and took my car to the Mercedes Dealer I've been going to for the past 8-10 years. The findings at the dealership were completely different. They replaced the radiator, a pressure transducer, and a coolant bleed line between the expansion reservoir and the cooler. The bill came to $2,423.20...I repeat $2,423.20 vs $15,341.50!!! My car is now running well and free of any problems. I came away from this experience convinced that Alex's Autohaus is run by individuals who are either incompetent, dishonest, fraudulant, or all of the above. How else can anyone explain the huge discrepancies between their diagnostics and the actual cause of the problem? read more

I sure wish I would have seen the reviews for this place before going here. As you can see from others, these people highly misrepresent their abilities and equipment. " If you inquire if they have PWIS they will look at you like you're speaking French and refer you to the dealership after wasting several days with your car at the shop. They do not have basic training and tooling to service the cars they claim. I am appalled that this facility hasn't been sacked for fraud. After having to park at another business for parking, my wife ended up paying $250 for an oil change that was to take ALL DAY... I get a message saying that there is an oil leak and I need to pay another $200 for them to figure it out. I pay that and they tell me pan for the engine is leaking oil and quoted me $1500 and sent me some pictures of the leak. I had not seen oil on the ground so I thought it was weird. I ended up taking it to another mechanic and they said the oil leak was because they messed up the oil change! They had put 2 rings where the oil drains. I had to pay $250 for the oil change. $200 for the engine test, and then pay another shop $130 to fix their oil change and couldn't use my car for the 4 days. read more

*** Update 8/11/2021 I am filing a complaint with the Utah Department of Commerce Division of Consumer Protection to investigate FRAUD, and possibly Legal Action soon. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE.** I really wanted to like this place. I gave them a couple of chances, I'll never come here again. I brought my Range Rover here for some suspension/alignment work, oil change, an issue with the driver side door, and because there was a service required light on (which they told me all was needed was an oil change..) Soon as I picked it up from them, the service light was still on, the alignment was CLEARLY still off, and the suspension/drive axels would still make the same noises occasionally. I didn't go back in to address it as I was upset, and thought I'd wait for my next appointment with them to bring it up. Thank god I missed that appointment. Today (a month later) I am sitting at the Land Rover Dealership writing this review. Land Rover pulled 2 codes as the reason the Service Light was on, which was never addressed by Alex Autohaus. Alex Autohaus quoted me $1,000 for the issue with the door, and told me it would take a few days. Today it costed me only $128 to fix what Alex Autohaus said was a $1,000 issue in ONLY 1 hour. Land Rover is also addressing the issues with the alignment/steering, that should have been fixed. Other than the incompetence of the technicians they have working there, the times they quote for their work, even a simple diagnosis, seem absolutely absurd and long (a few days each time). The car was also always dirty when I picked it up. I get that they are mechanics and dirt/residue may transfer but its little details like that, that set others apart. I'm not quite sure what is going on there but the logistics of this business seem to be all over the place. No one knows what's going on, timing is a complete nightmare, quality is absolutely atrocious, and cars are pancaked on top of each other (I also noticed a few door dings, I know this because I detail my car myself weekly, and know every single panel on it) Never again. I took my 2017 VW Alltrack into a Alex's Autohaus in Sandy Utah for a Turbo Wastegate Actuator replacement. My car was fine and never leaked a drop of oil until I took it to Alex's for repair. The car had an APR engine module and Alex's is an authorized APR repair shop. I took the car to Alex's and received an inspection report. The report showed a leaky valve cover gasket, needed an automatic transmission fluid change, cabin air filter replacement, leaking left front axle and spark plugs. The estimate was $3,407.56. The estimate to R&R the wastegate actuator that APR supplied and spark plug replacement was approx. $1200. Alex's replaced the actuator and in the process, they claim they found a crack in an engine block bracket causing it to leak oil and they were trying to seal it. Chris the shop foreman took me under the car and I noticed oil leaking down the block from higher up and at the bracket that bolted into the block. Alex's mentioned they needed to car for the weekend to drain the oil and use carburetor cleaner to clean the leaking bolt hole and surface prior to trying to seal it. Alex's offered to repair the cracked block for an extra $600. (I believe the mechanic caused the higher leak with faulty mechanic or intentional work.) Alex's tried to epoxy the crack in the block. I drove the car home and in 4 days, the oil leak started again. My car had a Bluebook value of $21,000 +/- before Alex's worked on the car and cracked the block. Alex's priced the labor to R&R the block at $12,000 without parts. This is due to the engine needs to be lowered through the bottom resulting in suspension removal and all peripheral systems. The Bluebook is now about $0 with the cracked block. Alex's did not return the APR control module to me either. It may have been kept for their own resale. I asked a Ford dealer what he would do and he rejected the car as a trade in due to turbo problems. I asked what the car is worth and the Ford dealer provided me a written estimate of value at $13,000.00 read more

Their initial assessment was that top would not completely open due to some apparent broken plastic parts and that all hydraulic and mechanical parts were fine. when the top was removed hydraulic pump required replacing (for which I approved). as time went on, they informed me that the frame was bent, and that a replacement would bring my total repair to over $8000. I told them not to go forth. picked up my car after paying $3400, and after about one month. picked up my car and while driving to me home on I-15, I noticed a recurring flapping sound. The following day a close inspection of the car revealed that the right rear tire (which required removal to drain accumulated water from top stowage compartment) had three loose lug nuts! Made an appointment for installation of two splash guards. I wanted two installed to make sure they matched the one missing. A week in advance made an appointment, took the vehicle in at 8:15 AM, by 2:30 PM I still hadn't heard from them regarding the status. Finally at 3:30 PM I got a ride to the shop, the Uber that was promised never arrived to pick me up. Upon arrival, only one splash guard had been installed, incomplete work! I complained and was left up in the air for 16 minutes as to resolution. Poor communication, Poor customer service and lack of follow up appears to be a problem. I do not recommend! Overpriced! I had an accident in my Car and when I took it to Alex's - btw, Alex sold this business years ago - they quoted me 3 weeks. When the third week came with no response on how the car was coming. I called, left a message and finally just showed up. It turned out they ordered the wrong part -eventually I realized they had ordered two incorrect parts. They said it would be another 3 days which turned out to be six days. When I asked for a discount because of their mistakes, they gave a $200 discount on a $5k job. I was shocked by the $500 bill for an oil change and plugs. Plus it took all day, and they failed to call when it was ready. It gets worse, however. I'm new to town, and the owner offered to do my emissions testing for me. He said the APR tune would need to be turned off (which I knew was a lie), and said it would cost $550. Well, needless to say, $39 and 5 minutes at the emissions shop and it was all done. This is the classic form of fleecing. It's a great shop if you like getting ripped off. I have been here three times the past few months for Audi repairs and once with my Jetta. They are great with German cars!! They had to remove the new stereo my daughter put in the Jetta to check computer warnings for state inspection. They did the 75,000 mile oil service, replaced the windshield, a burned out electrical fuse and several bulbs, repaired the oil vacuum pump and brake hose on the Audi quickly, professionally and inexpensively. read more

Worthy of no stars- Alex's Autohaus and their sister shop Matson Auto were partners in the most blatant auto repair rip-off I have ever experienced. They cheated me out of nearly $340.00 and wasted 3 hours of my time yesterday. I scheduled an appointment for my Porsche on the Alex's Autohaus website 2-3 weeks ago. I didn't get an appt. confirmation, so after a few days I called. I was informed that my scheduled appointment wouldn't be honored because the online scheduler doesn't work and they are busy. This took nearly a week to find out, and meanwhile I couldn't drive my car. The person I spoke to was very eager to recommended their sister shop, Matson Auto. She told me that they are very capable of diagnosing and repairing any issues I may have. She assured me that they would do a great job, and they could get me in sooner. So, I called Matson Auto to set up an appointment. I told them very clearly that my car needed inner tie rod ends and the passenger window regulator replaced. I also asked them to assess the air/oil separator, install tire pressure sensors, check the service light, and complete an emissions test so I can get the license renewed. They said they could handle it all if I drop it off, so I did. After about an hour, I got a call from someone who admitted he didn't know what he was looking at in the engine compartment, but would, "keep looking around" and call me back. A little while later I got a call informing me that they couldn't do anything to repair any of the identified issues with my car. They said this was because they couldn't find the parts; the parts like inner tie rod ends and a window regulator- the same parts I instructed them to replace, the very same parts that should have been ordered 2 weeks ago. They said I have an aftermarket intake manifold and they can't fix the air/oil separator- it is possible to work on car with aftermarket parts, but that isn't even why I brought it in. Since they couldn't bill me for any parts, they refused to complete any of the other work to my car. The tire pressure sensors were not installed, the service light was not addressed, air/oil issue continues, and no emissions test was completed. The window doesn't go all the way up, so I can't drive it due to rain and filthy, stinking thieves. All of this, and Matson Auto still had the nerve to demand $300.00 while providing nothing in return. They attempted to justify this as "diagnosing" the problems. There was no need to diagnose anything since I told them exactly what needed to be replaced two weeks ago. They failed to order the replacement parts and they have provided me with absolutely nothing of value. They must have thought the local parts store has OEM Porsche parts just lying around, and they could pick something up and triple the price. To me, this proves they have no knowledge or experience with foreign sport/luxury autos. It is, after all, just a tire shop that proved it isn't capable of performing the most basic of repairs. It also proves Alex's Autohaus is not trustworthy and very likely involved in fraudulent and criminal activity. I gained exactly nothing from this experience while these two "sister shops" get to share my money. The bill was just under $300, and I paid Uber $20.00 for transportation each way ($340.00 total). Alex's Autohaus and Matson Auto robbed me just like the thieves they proved to be. Unfortunately, we live in a world where they don't have to be accountable, but I do plan to tell this story to every single member of the Porsche groups I belong to, and I'll leave it available for all the groups I don't belong to including Facebook, Google, BBB, Yelp, PCA, Rennlist, Flat sixes, Pelican parts, Planet-9, etc. I hope these pigs choke on that money. Incredibly friendly and accommodating staff. I've been coming here for a couple years now, and they have always gone above and beyond to work with my schedule. My last visit was for a check engine light that they were able to fix easily. I had asked about a couple other items that I thought needed to be done, but they told me there was no rush and gave me a time frame so I could prepare for when those were needed, rather than pressuring me into getting everything done now. Went for a check engine light. $150 for diagnosis. Set appointment after finding out engine needed an emission problem fixed. Paid another $1600 for fix only to find out from another place after the job was done that the fix was under warranty from Audi and Autohaus should have told me that. Instead, they did the work and replaced the intake manifold with an aftermarket product which from this point on voids the warranty. They just wanted the work and milked me out of the covered repair. Very disappointed with the service at Alex's Autohaus. Their diagnostic capabilities were very poor. After charging $109 to run a basic diagnostic, they then wanted to charge 25% more than the dealership had quoted. Ended up just doing an oil change. That wasn't even done properly. They added way more oil than the car required. Rotated the tires and didn't even bother to check the tire pressure. Not pleased at all, I would stay away. They aren't cheaper than the dealership and the work wasn't done properly. read more

I'm new to town, but Alex's Autohaus came highly recommended by various family members who've been taking their cars there for years. And I can say I've found my go-to mechanic for my VW Touareg. They absolutely know their stuff for German cars (my Mom also uses them for her Volvo). They were very friendly, informative, did good work, and were reasonably priced. But, what really set them apart was this. While I was waiting for my work to be done, I overheard them make a call in the backroom to one of their customers who's truck was in for work. They confessed they'd broken a part, needed to order a replacement, but that they would cover the expense of the part and labor. I think most mechanics would just say the part was broken and charge the customer for their mistake. They didn't. That speaks volumes about their integrity. read more

I've taken my Porsche 997 S2C to Alex's since I purchased it used. It had the PSM light on when I bought it and Chris and the boys spent countless hours trying to figure out why. They discovered the rear tires were different sizes and the sensors kept trying to stop the larger from spinning. When I was able to finally get a pair of new Michelins they couldn't reset the PMS. Again Alex's spent countless FREE hours trying to figure out what was wrong. They even installed a new steering sensor which didn't do the trick so they took it out and didn't charge me for it. It turn's out the ABS module was cooked and Alex's had contacts to find me a rebuilt one that saved me over $2000. For many many years I had taken my Volvo XC70 to another shop and I kept asking that shop to look into this rather annoying "squeak", I provided video's so that shop could hear how that squeak sounded. Every time they seemed to never diagnose the squeak and the first time I took my Volvo into Alex's Autohaus they were able to diagnose and fix this squeak which was a very important part that required serious attention. We have been taking our Audis and VW Eurovan Camper to Alex's for 10+ years and have been very satisfied . During our recent trip to LA the serpentine belt broke and damaged the CV covers on our Eurovan. A temporary replacement of the belt was performed at a shop in the Calif. desert. During this fix I was advised that a defective tensioner pulley probably caused the belt to break, The pulley and belt had recently been replaced at Alex's. We continued to the LA area and had the pulley and CV covers replaced. We sent the defective pulley to Alex's and it was subsequently returned to the manufacturer for warranty. Alex's guaranteed their work and reimbursed us the full cost of repairs at both repair shops! I will continue to recommend Alex's to my friends. read more

Had a bad experience at Alex's Auto Haus, but they turned it around into a positive. The work was fine, but while I was standing there watching the assistant pull the car around in the lot, he broke my shifter. I've had this car for 10 years, and know exactly why it happened. The Vanagon has a strange shift pattern for reverse, and the young guy who was pulling the van around just gorilla armed it into gear, and broke the shifter. Alex's Auto Haus stepped up and paid for the broken part. They offered to install it also, but it's not a big deal for me to do, and saves them the time to work on customer jobs. My husband and I purchased a vehicle from them and had nothing but issues after they told us that it was a good quality car which would work well for our family. The suspension didn't last more than a week, one of the heads went out, there was a major exhaust leak, and the coolant constantly leaked. I have never worked with a more dishonest or disreputable company for any of the dozen cars I have bought in my life. I would recommend no one buys from this dealership.
