If you can get over the Soviet-era architecture, lack of natural lighting, "asbestos" warning…read moresigns, and maze-like interior, then Athletic Centre is right for you. It will make you an athlete and there's plenty of equipment and facilities to show for it. Membership is already included in your UofT student tuition, but you can always opt out. The gym features an indoor track/field house, dance and fencing studios, squash courts, and Olympic-sized pools. In spite of the intimidating, performance-athlete-only vibe that emanates from the front door, you can still get inspired by the many jacked powerlifters and kinesiology students that frequent the SCC (Strength & Conditioning Centre). In this glorious facility you'll find at least 5 squat/power racks (grab them while you can), sizeable weights, and lots of cable machines. One of the leg machines are always broken but IMO they're not the important ones anyways. The olympic weightlifting platforms are where the gold's at. If lifting's not for you, then take advantage of the free fitness and conditioning classes on offer, or the paid lessons for finer things like karate or fencing. They're lots of fun, taught by masterful instructors in their field, and open to non-students too. In fact, unlike the rest of University of Toronto, a class at Athletic Centre will actually equip you with real skills. -1 star because you don't want to die alone in here, where the sun don't shine; the older AC staff are usually grumpy (always approach the younger student workers); and there really should be more cardio machines.

The GOOD: If you like to swim, they do have a nice Olympic size pool. I think this is by far the best aspect of this facility with good dedicated lap swim time. Also, if you like running indoors in winter, they have a 200 meter track. Hours are also quite generous. The BAD: They only have something like 12 elliptical machines...this is for a campus of 80,000 staff and students. Prepare for the hassle of signing up and waiting. The locker rooms are dirty, crowded, and dingy. The weight room is a mixed bag: they have a lot of equipment, but it's undersized for the usage and filled with more meathead types. Not an environment I like. The facility is also very awkwardly spread out without much natural light...kind of depressing. The UGLY: No treadmills, no stairmasters...how can these staples of cardiovascular torture (I mean fitness) be completely absent? Classes like spinning or yoga cost extra and are not cheap. OVERALL, I went here because it was close to my office. The waits and lack of cardio equipment resulted in under-utilization. I also just never enjoyed working out here. I've switched to GoodLife and haven't looked back.

Until one day, while taking a walk, I came across the Jimmie Simpson Center. After checking, I found that it's also a municipal facility and free to use, so today I made sure to finish my errands early to swim 500 meters as part of my afterflu rehab. From now on, I'll probably keep coming here! First, both Jimmie Simpson and Pam McConnell are municipal recreational facilities, so they're free, and both are not far from my place - a 5-10 minute drive or under 20 minutes walking. Secondly, the second reason I prefer Jimmie over Pam is parking! Unlike Pam, which is located on Dundas East, Jimmie is situated in Leslieville on Queen East. After crossing DVP, traffic isn't bad, so parking is much easier. Also, I feel like not many people know about Jimmie, so it's less crowded compared to Pam. The paths are wider, and today I was the only one in the medium-speed lane. If I had to point out a downside, it's that the locker room facilities are much older than Pam and the YMCA, but they're still clean, and I kind of enjoy that nostalgic vibe. The pool water temperature is also really comfortable. Overall, I highly recommend it to anyone who lives in the east side of DT and is looking for a place to swim!

I don't know what's happened but in the last year, they have really increased their membership numbers but haven't increased classes or space to keep up with it. At peak times there's no lockers free, even. Classes are so full you hit people when moving, and when you grab the ticket to go into the class, sometimes even then you don't get a bike (for example) or space for your yoga mat, despite there being a (supposed) limited amount of class tickets. It makes no sense. With that said, it's my favourite GoodLife location because it's small, has all the classes I like and is nearby. I so love my spin instructor that despite being annoyed with the huge crowds last year and deciding I wouldn't renew this year, I love my spin instructor so much, I renewed my membership this year anyway. Even her class has gotten too crowded, though and last week we got the tickets to get in and still no bikes were free for us. There's a pool I've never used, too. The thing is, that there are 2 others within 2 blocks east and west of this location but because it's in the Maulife Centre it's the most crowded. They need to somehow address that. Otherwise I love this location - it's small, non-judgey, not 'bro-y', good classes....

It is cozy, and maybe doesn't have the space some other gyms in the city have, but it more than makes up for that with the excellent staff, great equipment and the fact that is never too busy to get a good work out in, no matter when you go. The craft boxing class is a wonderful experience also. This gym is very underrated, and I highly recommend this gym as a daily part of your fitness experience in Toronto.

This entertainment complex has a lot going for it, but there's also a lot of work that needs to be done. For one thing, it feels like a creepy abandoned amusement park. Sure, there are beach volleyball courts, a driving range, mini golf, a rock wall, a restaurant, a couple of bars and a pool, but it's all just plopped down on a giant swath of concrete, not unlike the CNE. It's also virtually deserted. If it were me, I would try to hide the lots full of trucks and generators with a wall of hedges. And have more greenery dotting the place. Maybe some fake palm trees around the pool. And real trees in planters in the GIGANTIC patio area (which also has pool tables, ping pong and fooz ball tables). Polson Pier makes Ontario Place look like Disneyworld. The pool area is small, but pleasant. There are about 50 deck chairs and 4 giant bed sort of things that you can lay about on (down from 8 last year, boo). The pool itself is kind of like a big fountain. It's 4 feet deep with a ledge all the way across where you can sit. It's chlorinated, which makes me thirsty and sleepy. The pool area has a bar on the side and a great view of the city. It's also got a pretty wide range of visitors, from young families to a group that could only be described as "Vin Diesel and his stripper friends." Use of the pool is $10, you buy a paper bracelet at guest services. The bar and food is fine. We drank tall boys of Rolling Rock, which were $7.50 each. Not cheap, but not ridiculous, considering you're so far from everything. You go to the bar to get drinks. This place might have gotten another star if they had servers in the pool area. I got an order of deep fried pickles at the cantina, which were fine, but pricey at $5.25 for 4 strips. A round of mini golf is $9 each. Also pricey, and the course is full of pits, but it's laid out well. Plus, I managed to tie with the Hubster, which makes me happy. If there was more going on, we might have stayed later and took in a movie at the drive-in (which doubles as the driving range), but the place was so deserted, we opted to leave. Honestly, this could be a really awesome way to spend a day if they just made a few changes. For one thing, maybe have a shuttle bus or something so that people could get there really easily. Then spruce it up a bit, bring the prices down a bit, and advertise the living hell out of it. Also, have two pools: the family pool, and the 19+ pool. We'll definitely be back again, because it's a genuinely relaxing place to hang, but if we found a decent replacement, we'd go there instead.

Party - awesome party, great music and great idea being by the pool side but having Toronto's skyline in view. Cover was $30! Come on real world people do not want to pay $30 cover then be charged $8 per can of bud lime! That seriously fuking pissed me off as it was the only beer they were offering and its day time I do not want to be knocking shots. Outside the pool party area there seems to be plenty to do except there is nobody around to do it? There were a few food joints and a bar where you could again buy rip off beer in a can but I think the whole place is wasting away and I can imagine why if your charging for crap drinks and food. I hear they have a golf driving range here so I would probably only consider going for that but if you have not been to the pool parties then try it out. Best moment was the dude that looked like a chipmunk pouring oil over himself then shaking his ass like a slippery rodent.
