The "natural" entrance to this pub, is through the front door, off of the high street. However, this leads to a very small room, where the table and chairs nearly touch the bar. When we walked in to the pub 4 of the 5 tables were taken up by a group of 8 or 10 locals. The conversation stopped, the heads turned and at this point, we were in The Slaughtered Lamb. I asked the landlady how we could get in to the more appealing room that I could see across the other side of the bar. The landlady took us through the bar to access the "friendly" (well, at least there was room to breathe in that side) room. It turns out that the access to the lounge is down the side of the pub. The louge had 5 or 6 local patrons using it - but no "outsiders". "Beware the moon, stick to the road - I vote we go back to The Slaughtered Lamb" No thanks! Having said all of the above, they reckon the food is good here - I'll save that for later.

I wanted a good quality Sunday lunch; I asked 3 different people on the High Street - and they all recommended Remar's. Don't waste your time hiking up and down the High Street - Remar's is quality! It was £5.25 for a single course Sunday carvery - a pretty average price, but it was the best I have tasted for a long time...you will not be disappointed. In addition to serving top quality food, they also sell real ale and had 3 pumps on this week... fantastic! A Christening was taking place whilst my friend and I were in the pub; yet the bar and carvery service was still swift and of a high standard. I can't fault the place - well done!

Prices are cheap, was just over £20 for a family of four to eat. They also have offers on and a kids menu. Could do with a bit of redecorating But overall a good experience. There are also the traditional "knock knock" tables in this side of the pub - tables that are "crafted" to host domino boards; these adorn the walls, as if some prized trophies. The right hand side of the pub could be seen as the "lounge", basic but clean and tidy - which pretty much describes the pub. I sampled a pint of Theakstons Mild, which was the only real ale they were selling; it was ok, nothing special, but nothing to moan about either. Maybe the locals of Queen Street and surrounding streets see The Alma as their "Rovers Return?" - It sort of had that feeling to it, a bit like being caught in a time warp.

The club is huge inside & there's plenty of room for dancing etc on a live entertainment/disco night.This is the ideal place to hold a party/wedding etc.Havent actually stayed over here but believe the club to be free to be used by those staying on the caravan park. It must have been recently refurbished as it is bright and light with wooden flooring and recessed lights in the ceiling etc. There are a couple of TV's fitted in to the "canopy" which runs above the top of the bar area. A further 2 bigger plasma TV's are located in each side of the pub. The TV's over the bar were playing a music channel and the 2 other TV's were showing cricket on Sky. I'm not sure if it wants to be a music pub or a sports pub - surely all 4 TV's should have been showing the same programme? To the rear of the pub is a reasonable sized beer garden with numerous benches and kiddies playground - slide, climbing frame, swings, seesaw roundabout etc. It was a Monday evening when we visited, and there were only a handful of punters in the place. I'm sure there would be a few more customers on a weekend. The pub sells the same real ale as its sister pub (The Victorian Bar), Hobgoblin, which I was happy to sample. The inside and outside of this pub seem to be in conflict with each other. When first approaching the pub, we were expecting it to be of a more traditional layout, perhaps a bit darker and more "homely". The inside is quite modern, bright and trendy and took us a bit by surprise. The refurbishment at The Victorian Bar seems to work well; I'm not sure it quite does so here. I'll call in at the weekend and see if it is any busier than on a week night. The back area of the pub hasn't been refurbished and the toilets were old and really smelly. The Hobgoblin was a nice pint and I wouldn't have a problem calling in again.

Times are hard and the well travelled jet setters of the 21st century don't want to spend their holidays at Withernsea. It also appeared that none of the locals wanted to spend their leisure time in The Pier either. Maybe there are too many pubs chasing the same dollar in this small town? After all, the population of the town is only 6,000. The Pier doesn't help itself though. It looks run down and near dilapidated from the outside - not an inviting venue. The inside has had what looks like a recent decor (wall paper & carpets) change - though it's obviously been done on a miniscule budget. I guess a lack of punters through the door means that there is no "spare" money to invest in fixtures & fittings in order to improve the aesthetics of the building. It looks as if The Pier is in a downward spiral to me. No one is going to invest any money in the place as it will not generate the revenue needed to make a profit. How long before the door is locked for the final time? As for the beer - well they don't sell any real ale. I had a bottle of Holsten Pils, as it seemed the safest option. In summary; it's a dark, dingy, scruffy hole, characterless and lacking atmosphere. Sorry for slating it so much - but, it's a hole.

My friend didn't want to go in because of the doggy poo! However, I was on a mission, and that was to have at least one drink in every pub in Withernsea. The front door, which leads in to the conservatory was locked; the "pub" appeared to be closed. However, I could see that the lights above the bar were on, so I went around to the side door in an attempt to gain entry. Once inside, I did a visual scan of the establishment and noticed a guy, who I think may be a long term resident, sat at one of the tables with the owners dog. The dog was actually sat up on the seating - disgusting! The Marine Hotel would benefit from a fire and an insurance payout. It is dark and dirty and resembles Steptoe's yard! You would think that a "pub" that is located on the seafront and named The Marine would have a nautical theme. There was so much junk in the pub that I thought they had adopted a junk yard theme! This place needs decluttering - big time! The best feature of the pub is the ocean view as you look out of the conservatory windows. However, even this is severely spoiled, as the owners have so many big "ornaments" and plants stood on the window sill, thus restricting the view - crazy! I hated the 1001 metal/pot/glass tankers that hang from the countless jacobean dark oak beams - dust catchers! They aren't impressive, they just give the impression of the place being a junk shop. What this place needs is some money spending on it. There lies the problem. Withernsea doesn't attract the visitors that it used to - so the money to re-invest just isn't there. Having said that, I have noted this last week, that the establishments that offer a good quality product are open and those that look a little run down and shabby are closed - probably just "mugging" people at the weekend. In terms of decor, I would strip all the dark wood out, I'd have a jumble/garage sale and get rid of all the clutter - everything. The artex needs stripping and re-plastering, it needs a clean contemporary feel to the place, with the odd picture here and there. Ideally the entrance door to the conservatory needs to be in the centre of the conservatory and I would extend a flight of stairs from the entrance down to the public footpath. The area immediately in front of the conservatory could do with decking and fitting with some good quality benches. The private drive needs screening, so as you aren't seeing or walking past the untaxed vehicles, the caravan and boat etc. The business and private parts need to be defined and kept apart. I know it's their pub and they can do as they like but they really should keep the dog out of the public part - it is so unhygienic! I wonder what the hotel rooms are like? The pub doesn't sell real ale. The coke was a can of coke - a la supermarket. No draught coke or the small fancy coke bottles. It could have been worse, some serve soft drinks out of the 2ltr supermarket bottles. I had a Newcastle Brown Ale. Both glasses were dirty. My friend didn't open her coke - it went in a public bin when we left. As a pub, I can't see how it makes money. I would guess it may "house" tennants on a B&B basis paid for by the DHSS or whatever it's called these days. I have a friend who has a boarding house and they take in tennants from the social. That's the only way I can see how it stays open. I had to allocate the pub a one star - it does not allow you to enter none.

I am told that the proprietor also owns the Butterfly pub, which is located further up Queen Street. He must be a wealthy man, as he has tastefully and impressively refurbished this pub to a high standard. The Victorian Tavern is very much a high spec 21st century pub and well worth trying. The pub would sit well on any trendy high street in any city.
