We went on a tour called "family-owned." The tours seem to fill up quickly on weekends, so it is a good idea to reserve in advance. You meet in the main building and then form into your tour group. You get a quick briefing at the start, then go into one of the tenements. This tour started in one that was a saloon in the front and then an apartment in the past (with families from Prussia and Bavaria). The tour guide was excellent and the history was really interesting. I will likely go back again for a different tour--definitely worth a visit.

My tour featured the stories and living spaces of a Jewish family with a mother and father who survived the holocaust and a Puerto Rican family that moved into the neighborhood at a later point in time. Our tour guide, Silas, was a great storyteller and brought the lives of the two families to life through vivid descriptions of their everyday life, details on the evolution of the neighborhood, and context on the larger story of immigration to the U.S. Along with just being in the real living spaces of the families-- reconstructed to the best of the museum's abilities-- the vivid, minute details in the storytelling made the experience feel very intimate in a way that you don't get from a traditional history museum. It was also cool to hear the efforts the museum made to make sure the living members of the two families maintained ownership of their stories. The nice thing about the museum is that there is always more to come back to experience since there are numerous tours to sign up for, each focusing on different families or aspects of tenement life. The tour was only an hour, though, which is much less time than most people would typically spend at a museum. Overall, a wonderful experience.

After touring with Luke twice in 2011 (group tour as a couple in April then a private tour on a…read moregirls trip in October) when we were planning our itinerary for our trip back to NYC in November 2025 with our 11 year old son, Real New York Tours was the top of our list. We chose the private family tour and booking was quick and easy and the customer service as great as I remembered. On to the tour itself: Luke met us at the Museum of Natural History on time and we got reacquainted. My son is autistic and can have some trouble warming to new people but absolutely no the case with Luke, he immediately put my son at ease and they were chatting like old friends as we made our way into Central Park. The tour covered loads of Central Park, including an exciting off track visit to a secret cave, the plaza hotel, grand central station, some fun subway rides, and concluded at the Brooklyn Bridge. But more than just seeing so many iconic sites, Luke had hundreds of facts and stories (which my son loved) about what we were seeing. It was truly like spending a wonderful day with an old friend. TEP deserves more than 5 stars for the amazing start to finish service we experienced on our 7 day…read moreadventure to Peru to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. From the time we signed up, to the time we boarded the plane to return home, TEP took care of every detail. We commented amongst ourselves that we felt like kids on vacation with our parents, as we didn't have to worry about any of the details - just show up and follow Neptali (our guide). From airport pickup in Cusco in luxury Mercedes vans where we were promptly served Coca tea to help with the altitude acclimation, to group dinners at amazing Peruvian restaurants, to historical tours and education on the history of the Inca - everything was covered and taken care of for us. And that was all before the amazing trek along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu! Of course the trek itself was the highlight of the trip, and although it was extremely challenging for us, TEP's unbelievable attention to detail did not fail us on the trail. With nearly a 2:1 porter to trekker ration, our every need was met on the trail. We dined like kings every meal, and were consistently amazed with the quality (and nutritional appropriateness) of the food our chef and sous chef were able to put out with minimal kitchen conveniences. The thing I felt was most special about TEP's approach to this trip was the focus on gaining a cultural and historical appreciation for what we were experiencing. Every step along the way, we learned about the native people of Peru, the Inca civilization, the many ruins we came across, the vegetation we saw and how it was and is used, and the history of modern Peru. It was the trip of a lifetime, and have the help of The Explorer's Passage made it so much more enjoyable, and so much more memorable. The value of what they provide is amazing for the cost....rather, for the investment. I highly recommend them!

I could not believe that counted as part of the experience. Overall this felt like a waste of money and time. It was crowded, disorganized, and the storytelling lacked excitement. Meghan our tour guide was incredibly informed, animated and a sweetheart to spend the night with. she was engaging and really was into the stories and facts about this area of town. My suggestion? Meghan should have a microphone or something better to project her voice. she was great, but it was hard to hear at times due to the loudness of the city and her voice being on the lower side. I also think her candle lit lantern should be brighter or bigger. we had issues finding her, but to our surprise we were within a few feet from her. my favorite part of the tour and what made this unique were the candy that Meghan gave us in the beginning, and the sheet at the end with all of the facts and story names that we heard. i have been on so many tours and always have to rush taking notes or googling things as the tour happens that i end up loosing info or missing out on hearing items, but this printed out list of facts was a HUGE help.
