This place was busy tonight! We arrived at 8:30 and the line was literally out the door! The tables inside were all occupied and so were the ones outside! We waited about 10 minutes to finally order what we wanted. There were so many yummy things to choose from! It was so hard to pick just one thing! You can ask for a sample of their ice cream since there are so many different flavors. Oh and they have wafer cones and wafer bowls for an additional charge. I ended up getting one scoop of the pecan/nuez flavored ice cream in a cup and it was the bombbbbbb. The ice cream was very creamy and the flavor was great! My husband ordered an agua fresca (melón) with a bag of Mexican chips (you can only find in Mexico) and a Mexican candy. The melon drink was delicious and tasted fresh. Both employees were great! We paid 7.84 for a large drink, one scoop of ice cream, bag of chips, and one candy. Definitely not bad! read more

Alegre (it means cheerful or happy in English) took me back to my youth in the mid 80s and early 90s. The shop reminds me of an ice cream shop my grandma used to take me to in Juarez. It was inside a Juarez mall. They have the same type of Mexican ice cream and flavors from back then at Alegre. They let you sample the ice cream before buying it. Alegre has a great selection of ice cream flavors, paletas (ice pops) and other Mexican snacks aka antojitos. I'm not sure if they change the flavors at times, I should've asked. The flavors I liked the most were tres leches, Gansito and strawberry cheesecake. I've baked a tres leches cake and it sort of had the same flavor. The Gansito has red jelly with chunks of chocolate in it. A Gansito is comparable to a Twinkie, except it's chocolate and has chocolate sprinkles on top. It also has red jelly inside of it. They're probably served in heaven. My son got a scoop of chocolate ice cream. I didn't like it as much as the other flavors I mentioned. It tasted watered down and it wasn't creamy at all. He said the same thing. I got a banana split with a scoop of tres leches and strawberry cheesecake. It was bomb! Chocolate and strawberry syrup was added on top with whipped cream and pecans. It's served with some banana slices in a waffle cone/cup. Both ice creams came with vanilla wafers. The only reason I give Alegre four stars is because all of the tables were dirty. Dirty tables and restrooms in public places are a pet peeve of mine. I didn't go into the restroom so I can't tell you what that was like. The customer service is great here. The girl helping us out was super attentive and polite. Like they say in Spanish, era muy amable. They mostly speak Spanish but understand English. The prices are pretty reasonable. I paid $7 and change for a banana split, a cup of chocolate ice cream and a 12 oz can of Coke Zero. I think I'll return, especially since the hot temperatures are around the corner. read more

I cannot believe I have not reviewed my favorite ice cream place. They make all the ice cream in house and they have a lot of unique flavors you can't get anywhere else. My personal favorite is the Gasito one, it has actual pieces of it and it's so gooood! Today I did have a sample of some new flavors they had avocado and jicama. The avocado one was delicious it was creamy and light. The jicama was okay I would like to try it topped with chamoy and tajin. Honestly though all of the different flavors I've tried are all really good including the mazapán, pistacho, cappuccino, and Ferro Rocher. I love that they always top your ice cream with a wafer cookie as their signature touch. They also have homemade paletas in all kinds of flavors. And if you are not in the mood for nieve there are all kinds of Mexican treats in store. Elote, chilindrinas, papas locas, cacahuetes preparados, aguas frescas, and so much more. They also have an option to sit inside or outside which is nice. You can always bring your furry friend along. The staff is super friendly and they are always really helpful and attentive. Whenever I'm in the mood for some good ole fashion homemade ice cream this is definitely on top of my list. Go check it out! read more

Tried new things here and they all were AMAZING! - strawberries & cream popsicle: Sweet cream goes well with those huge chunks of strawberry in it. Not overwhelming creamy and freshing. Get this!! - mango & chamoy popsicle: Delicious! Chunks of mango with that chile...like I'm eating candy, but cold! So good. - Horchata: THE BEST. Wow, their horchata is the best I've ever tasted. It wasn't too watery nor had too much cinnamon. It was sweet, but not too sweet. It's really delicious, I couldn't stop drinking it. Actually, I would call this refreshing as well. It has a lot of flavor! The large size is also super cheap. I honestly bought a large and saved it for the next few days, lol. Why not? It's so goooood. - Chilindrinas: Had this for the first time. A lot of customers seemed to order this and we just had to try it! Basically, there is thick and crispy cracker at the bottom (taste and texture reminds me of Asian shrimp crackers) with chopped lettuce, cucumber, and avocado, drizzled with this specific brand of hot sauce and crema--sort of like a salad. As plain as it looked, do not be fooled. IT IS AMAZING. WOW. Sprinkle the lime juice all over, get a chunk of the cracker with the salad and BAM...crunch from the veggies, creaminess from the avocado, saltiness and crunch from the cracker, and a little kick and tartness from the sauce...SO GOOD. Wow...I was FLOORED. LOVED THIS DISH. It's a great snack to share between a small group of people (depending on how much you want to share!) that is refreshing and full of flavor. I would totally get this again!!! Overall, love, love, love this place! Makes me feel like a kid again :). read more

My mom and her friends practically live here. They love the "Tostitos preparados" which come with corn. My brother loves their Ferrero ice cream. But if you're hating this heat and you're used to eating spicy Mexican things, you need a Chili Mango Paleta. It's the best thing in life! It has big chunks of delicious real mango, and all chili you could ask for. It is quite spicy, so consider your stomach warned but for $1.25 I stop and get one whenever I'm driving by. It's seriously the best paleta I've ever had. They have lots and lots of flavors to choose from, in both ice cream and paletas. I also recommend having their aguas frescas, so refreshing! I was crazy enough to try this place on a cold night. I have such a sweet tooth. This ice cream place is a bit small, maybe 5 tables, booth, and some a few seating outside. An outsider coming to El Paso on business, and after a warm and dry day of work, I needed something refreshing. I honestly though of stopping at a chain ice cream joint, like a Marble Slab or something, but instead I scrolled through Yelp (Yelp has never disappointed once!), and there it was this "Alegre Ice Cream" place, so I decided to drive a few extra miles and give them a try. They sure didn't disappoint at all! It was delicious! They make their own ice creams! And they all taste so very good! (You can get spoon size samples).
