We found out you can, right here in Wilmington, by signing up for a new local produce delivery service called The Produce Box. We signed up after skyrocketing bills at Tidal Creek had us reevaluating our grocery budget. Our friends in Raleigh have been doing this for a while and I guess it is a service catching on across the country....glad to see something as cool as this in Wilmington. What is it, you ask? $22 a week and you get a good size box of locally grown, farm fresh produce to your DOOR. Yes, right to your front step. Essentially, its the same stuff at the local farmers market, but delivered. We are simply amazed and excited each week when our box comes...to top it off, they throw in samples of maple butter, bbq, honey, etc and you get a friendly note from farmers and produce box coordinators with recipes and what is going on in their world. Financially, we did the math and you'd have to atleast spend $40-50 a week depending on the produce for the same price. Buying direct from farmers really does make sense.... Nothing we've done so far in Wilmington has made us feel so connected to the community as a whole. No subscription, cancel anytime and if you are on vacation you just login and "skip a week" Real easy. After doing this for about 6 weeks, we've seen our grocery budget get back to normal (probably less) and you really feel like you are part of something special going on.... Here are the boxes for this week (they change each week depending on what is in season and what is fresh) - and, they offer "stock up" options like if you want some cucumbers for pickling. I found them at a Farmer's Market called Biggers Market! This place has everything! When I say, everything, I mean it! I never knew there was a thing called strawberry onions. Like, onions grown near and in strawberry fields! Super cool! I actually visited this place 3 times while in town for 7 days. By my second and third visit, the cashier recognized me and thought I was a local. I wish!! I told her that I'd be back because they had great nuts! Lol.. she thought that was funny! The ambiance gives happy workers and a happy community that knows they can bring the kids and dogs, have a few local brews on the weekend, get a great pick from fresh veggies, to fresh seafood, dips, fresh breads and jams, and anything else you may be looking for! But why I realize speak highly of it is the prices are so reasonable. Granted more than even the nicer supermarkets but way less than other high end butchers I've seen. They have the same large bin with warm packaged corn tortillas just like the first location. These corn tortillas were from Luna's in South Carolina. There was a hot food area where you can get one meat entrée with Mexican rice, five pieces of fresh, warm corn tortillas, and spicy tomatillo sauce for $9.99 (4:22pm lunch price). There were other cooked meat there too, looked like chicharrones. The meat options for either beef with green beans, chicken fajita, beef with potato, or pork and red salsa. You typically only get one meat, but you can do half of one meat dish and half of another meat dish. I tried the beef with green beans and the pork in red salsa. They were both fine and very salty, but the pork tasted way better for my preference. The spicy salsa was delicious, I wish I could eat this every week. The bakery section had the usual baking sheet pan (on top of the bakery checkout area) and tongs that you grab yourself like the first location. There's a way larger variety here than the first location. After grabbing the bread products I wanted, they packaged it in a bag with a receipt at the checkout station where I got the sheet pan. 4 pieces of the French bread and one small crescent shaped sweet bread costed a total of $4.75. The breads were good as usual, but of course taste way better right after it's done baking, which I was lucky enough to get at the first location. There are no grocery carts, only baskets.
