I'm of course biased t wards the Swiss raw milk cheese available there but there are many other brilliant options from local goats milk cheese to English cloth bound cheddar. There's also a The Source store as part of the concept and a bakery is also on the map.

There's a bar/restaurant at the entrance, and once inside you're greeted with a deli, fruit shop, butcher, dedicated cheese room, an organic whole foods store, and soon there will be a bakery too. I have to say it plainly. All the fruit and vege I've had has been sensational. If it's local, it will tell you where it's from. The butchers are Schulte's in the Lockyer Valley (yay, award winning butcher!) Basically, if you're near West End and you're after fruit, veg and meat, The Stores is for you.

Hospitality workers, shift labourers and the inveterately disorganised know this fact only too well - if you end up trying to sort out dinner after the 9pm mark on a weekday you won't be able to get anything from the major supermarkets and your takeaway options will be seriously limited. That's why I appreciate the role of chains like IGA. To me, they represent the happiest compromise possible between a 24-hour convenience store and a full-blown supermarket. IGA Milton has an especially good range and boasts impressive opening hours: 6am - midnight 365 days a year (foreign readers from countries where 24-hour supermarkets are easy to find will have to excuse my excitement)! The deli here is quite gourmet, with a good selection of salamis and prosciutto as well as an array of olives. There are also some wholesome ready to eat salads and other heat-and-eat options like tortilla stacks. The nearby cheese selection showcases a well sourced selection of brie, camembert, blue and many others. I've even bought a very tasty pre-made sand crab lasagne from the refrigerated section. I suppose we have the area's high socio-economic status to thank for these epicurean touches.

My roommate laughs at me every time I say I'm popping down there for groceries and sarcastically wishes me luck getting a park, and he's not wrong. It's every man for himself when it comes to parking at this place. Horrible parking experiences aside though, this IGA is a godsend. The amount of times I've panicked when I've had nothing to take to work for lunch the next day or I've run out of milk and this place has saved me, I simply cannot count. One particular occasion I forgot it was a coworker's birthday the next day so I frantically rushed into Milton IGA at around 11pm and quickly swiped up a chocolate mud cake. It's a constant topic of conversation in my house how amazing the Baroona Road IGA's opening hours are. 6am to 12am every night; how does it get any better than that? Plus it's a TINY place, and yet I always seem to be able to find everything my heart desires. How do they manage to pack all that stuff into this tiny little space? Beats me, but they do. I prefer it to even larger supermarkets where they'd have about five hundred different brands of washing powder or mango juice because Baroona Road IGA always has what I need. For a small place, it has a ridiculously amazing selection of gourmet cheeses and healthy cooking options, plus a better range of caesar salads than I see in larger IGAs or Woolworths stores. Rather than go to Toowong's large and probably cheaper Coles, I prefer to go here. It's more convenient, and the selection is excellent. It's far better than any other chain grocery store I've experienced thus far. Everything is super easy to find whether you're in a rush or planning a larger shop. Because of Baroona Road IGA, I never go hungry. If you're a Milton/Auchenflower local, you'll find that you cherish and appreciate this IGA as much as me; if you survive the rat race of the car park out front, that is.

This is the Express Coles not a regular one, so don't expect to find everything you want there. It's a small place, so everything on the counter usually run out quick. They also have many self check out merchines. I remember there were a few time I couldn't find what I wanted to get (sorry it has been a while and I don't remember). The vegetable section usually is fresh but occasionally isn't but I guest it's almost the same as other grocery stores. The staff are friendly.

You could easily do a week's worth of grocery shopping here, however the small shopping baskets sort of prevent that from happening (unless you are the Incredible Hulk/can survive off lettuce for every meal). This place houses everything from heavy duty household cleaning products, to cat food, personal hygiene goods, juices, baking goodies and a variety of frozen Asian food products. They often have specials on particular products (there's often cheap pumpkins advertised out the front) and have an assortment of banana bread, muffins and slices at the counter, which sometimes act as a necessary source of comfort food. So if you're in the area and are running low on literally anything/everything in your house; you can be sure to replenish your depleted stocks here.

Up until now, I always referred to it as the little Asian Supermarket on Fred Schonell. I have a warm spot in my heart for this grocery store. It was my local one for so long and I felt as if I visited it on almost a daily basis to pick up my milk and bread. It was flooded out earlier in the year but luckily has made a full comeback. This is not your average supermarket. They sell slices of homemade banana bread or cakes on the front counter, and you always see the same staff who are kind and friendly. They have a great fresh food section. While it does not have a huge selection of vegetables you will find whatever they do stock is often of great quality and in season. They also stock a lot of Asian vegetables and packaged foods here that aren't easily available elsewhere. If you wonder down the very tight aisles to the back you will find a tower of two minute noodles, bread, bags of rice and a wall full of spices. They have freezers full of pork buns and dim sums. They also stock all your other basic foods and needs like toilet paper, pencils, batteries etc. While not good for a big shop (you couldn't fit a trolley down those aisles if you tried), it is the perfect spot to pick up those few missing ingredients for your next meal.

And you're supporting small local business. Win! Their platter of rich, red, iron laden meats just makes me salivate. They've got all of your standard cuts: eye fillet ($29.99 kg), scotch fillet, T-bones, rump, as well as diced meat, and two versions of mince. Then there's ossu buco cuts, and $2 bags of lamb off cuts, and $2.50 bags of neck chops (good for stocks, soup, or delicate treats for your dog). Chicken and pig can be found in various manifestations in the other fridge. The major drawcard for me is the varieties of sausage they sell there (all priced at $7.99). Worchestershire sauce sausage? Herb and garlic? Spanish chorizo sausage that isn't actually chorizo sausage (it's a bit of an odd one, I know)? How about sun dried tomato sausage? Your barbeque will be the most flavourful in town if you shop here, I promise. The service is quick and no nonsense, and you can't argue with the prices. Do yourself and small business a favour, and get your meat goods at Meat Your Lifestyle.

Meat Your Lifestyle has a great range of beef, pork, lamb and chicken, and gives its neighbour, Coles, a run for its money. Whilst not on display, they also have specialty meats written up on their chalk board, like peking duck, so be sure to ask if what you're looking for isn't in the cabinet. My favourites are their osso bucco for only $6.50/kg (great for tenderising in a slow cooker) and their free-range eggs, the cheapest I've come across in Brisbane. I also like their whole free-range chickens, costing around $7/kg. They come with their innards removed, making it quick and easy to stick them in the oven. The only downside is that they don't seem to sell free-range chicken breasts and the chicken breasts they do sell are so big, you have to wonder about the steroid content. Service is mixed, depending on who you get. Some employees there can be a bit abrupt, others really friendly. Either way, it beats Coles!

This one did not have a ton of things to suit my niche areas of interest (nut milks, tofu, rice and bean preparations, healthy breakfast cereals). It does, however, carry some useful things, notably a local brand of prepackaged bean salads that make for exceptionally healthy and tasty light meals. I couldn't see it as more than a supplement to other grocery venues, but I'll likely be back now and then.

A pretty typical Coles…read more It looks tired and run down, staff look bored and uninterested. Who can blame them? They're open until 9pm most nights which is quite handy. In West End there's this Coles, an Aldi and an IGA. Depending on which is closest to you, they're all quite handy to pop in and grab a few things, but if you are going to do a bigger shop, you probably need to take a car. This is where Coles West End runs into trouble. See, they used to offer 2 hour free parking underneath the complex, but they have just started charging a minimum of $5 even if you're only there 10 minutes. There's a very limited number of parks outside, and even more limited street parking. Think hens teeth. Basically, if you want to buy more than you can walk home with, go elsewhere. The Aldi up the road has free undercover parking. As for the store? If it's packaged on the shelves you're probably safe. Any meat that is on special you can guarantee is already off. Anything at all from the deli has been off for days.
