I've been going here for over 50 years. Ouch that hurt…read more It IS Cleveland. It represents. The produce is sooooo fresh. Forget Whole Foods, Sprouts, Fresh Market. This beats them all. And by price too. The outdoor stalls are being refurbished, and the section that is complete is just like the historic stalls but much nicer, brand new, clean. Outdoors is the produce. Inside is all the rest - meat, cheese, baked goods, spices, coffee, international foods...the list goes on and on. The ceiling is like an old train station , but purpose built in 1912 to be a bad*ss market. Gorgeous. About 130ish stalls. Cafe/bistro in ine corner, Johnny's hot dog joint in another. Kate's Fish, Peroigi Palace, Frank's Brats, Jim's Meats, Wiencek Poultry, Czuchraj Meats...i could go on... Get a buttermilk at Annemaries - salt and pepper on top is how my Dad did it. That tradition will stay with me forever. Grab a smokie at Czuchraj and stroll the stalls, get your shopping done, or just relax the day away. (go across the street to Great Lakes Brewery for a coldie) On the register of Historic Places, and one of 10 Great Public Places in America List.

Been awhile since I've been here. Parking is always a challenge. Last time I was here you had to…read moreget a ticket. Now it's a QR Code. You get 90 mins free then you pay $1.50 an hour. Pretty good. But you gotta do the work and hit the code and go thru the process. The WSM right now is under construction. So the produce side is smaller and off to the side not the main hall. Then you go out and walk around the sidewalk off Lorain to get to the meat side. Produce side is to the left. Smaller space but they have it organized better. Everyone is selling the same stuff and prices are fairly similar for each stall. But it is brighter and well laid out. I guess you can go by who looks the most trustworthy to who you buy from. Just keep an eye out to what you buy and make sure it's what you get. That was the old market. Hopefully it's better now. TBH I did not buy any veggies or fruit. Meat side is abundant with meat, fish, pastry, sauces, cheese and other vendors. You can find a deal. We got 3 pounds of ground meat for $18. Sunday is an off day some vendors are off so not all the stalls are filled. But more than enough. We also went to Christopher the bread guy for our favorite bread. So good! We got the rustic Italian small loaf and they sliced it. Good sandwiches this week for lunch. But they have a million other options too. This is a nice little treasure and it's worth the time and effort to go here. Grab lunch and hang out on W25th it's fun and worth the visit.

Looks like more needs to be said about this powerhouse in local food! We are in our 3rd year of…read moreboth summer and winter subscriptions. Just signed up for another summer! Much has staid the same since the previous reviews... great weekly newsletter/ online store / bag process for 22 weeks in the summer... and a kind of wonky but refreshing winter subscription... summer starts in June and runs through october... winter picks right up but is only weekly to Turkey day and then changes to every other week. Shopping the online store is like having a farmer's market at your finger tips! Every week they also bring items to the stops for grab and go purchase... but if you really want milk and eggs... order online! They can sell out at the truck. This winter we tried the new Carnivore subscription... over the season smeveryone gets the same cow / pig / poultry and value add (lard, stock, deli meat, sausage, bones) but there is less flexibility... you need to go to the same stop each week. No dietary substitutions... everyone gets pork for example. The only downside to the omnivore winter subscription is the cabbage... lots and lots of cabbage... sauerkraut... more basketball size cabbages... so the carnivore is a nice change while still having access to the store and avoiding out of state protein. They post the newsletters and photos of the weekly bags online and have an epic treasure troce of recipes!

I'd say an update is due, considering how much I talk about FFM on a daily basis!…read more The Winter Share is off the chain--if you're even considering it, do it. I'm a regular Summer Share member (2yrs running) and it's my favorite. However, last year I didn't do the Winter one and this year I did--holy crap was I missing out. Totally worth the price. You pick up weekly bags in the beginning and then switch to once every other week as the cold months kick in. You get tons of winter veggies, greens and then you'll start getting freshly frozen, long-lasting items that store well. Lots of root veg, cheeses, jars of pickled goodness, grains, dried beans (not like those ones you get at the store, trust), pastas and lots and lots of meat! Oh--and if you haven't tried their Thanksgiving Bags, please do so this year. You won't be disappointed.

Found my new produce stand at the WSM--done and done…read more I'm a CSA gal, Fresh Fork to be exact, but sometimes you just need some extra ingredients and that's where Rooted In Cleveland comes in. Here there is no question where your produce is coming from--most likely it's from across the street at Ohio City Farm! Yep: the farm that helps refugees find work and teaches them to farm to make money (Refugee Responce)... the farm space that helps people in need find fresh produce while also supplying local restaurants in Ohio City with tons of homegrown goodies. That farm! The stand has pretty much all seasonal items, but when I stopped by last week they had everything I was looking for. Herbs, root veggies, tomatoes, greens--yum! I'm not sure what the stand will look like in the winter months, but I'm sure they'll have something out there that's delicious. Their FB page says it best, "We're a seasonally and sustainably-oriented produce stand at the West Side Market providing local and organically-minded specialty produce." Prices were way cheaper than Dave's Supermarket and pretty on point with the rest of the stands. But what really stands out? No yelling or selling! That's right--no one at the stand will try to sell you or trick you into buying overly ripened produce they don't let you see first before they throw in a bag. In general, just picture this: You're fighting your way through the produce wing at WSM on a Saturday afternoon, then you turn the corner to suddenly find a peaceful place where you can take a breath of fresh air and buy bad ass local produce. Yes, that was a bit of a run-on, but you get the point. Hint: It's near the Ohio City Blooms stand.
