Starting in May and going through to October, OKC blocks off Walker just North of NW 23rd for 5 hours to promote healthy living and sustainability, a friendly place to walk, and provide a family-friendly atmosphere. You can also find local edible crafts such as pickles, salsa, and protein bars and snacks. There were a couple of bands playing music that went perfectly with the atmosphere. I loved that it was right next to The Pump and Urban Core so I didn't have to drive back and forth across town for my other Sunday errands. I wish there had been a few more vendors with a few more options, but I'm sure it will grow to be just as popular as H & 8th has become. As for parking, there seems to be enough as long as you don't mind walking a block. I parked on 23rd and there were two grass lots that people filled up pretty quickly.

Why was the Urban Teahouse (and other businesses, I GUESS) lot packed to the max? I was very irked by this. But a parking spot was found and tea was had. Then I learned that the reason for the audacious parking was the farmer's market. I knew the Uptown Farmer's Market existed in some form or another. It just didn't click in my head at first. So yeah. I visited my former brief enemy because I'm such a white girl when it comes to farmer's markets. It's small. Duh. It's a short stretch of street, but I think the small space packs a punch. What did I buy in such a little area, you ask? -Doughnuts from Holey Rollers (Note: I'm not vegan. These are vegan doughnuts. These are some of the best damn doughnuts. So if "vegan" throws you off and makes you suspicious, let it go. Get a doughnut.) -Pickling cucumbers -Honey and salsa -A candle -Wine -Fresh chicken breast -Freshly made bread and pretzels There were a number of other things, obviously. A good amount of choices when it came to meat. Three different vendors were peddling their animal bits, along with other assorted products, such as the honey and salsa and fruits/vegetables. On sight, I found: cucumbers, fresh basil, watermelon, peaches, squash, onions. There was likely more produce that I just didn't notice. As far as vendors go, there was also a stand for olive oil and I think another one for some locally made items, but I'm not sure what. We came into the market at the tail end of the time, so by time we made it to that area, they were closing up shop. Maybe next time! Holey Rollers, The Loaded Bowl, and an Italian ice cart made the scene, as well. So that's a nice little touch to have some treats around!

But once we figured it out, my world in all its cheesy goodness will never be the same. So which cheeses...queso crema y queso fresco. These are the house made cheeses we're talking about here, not some prepackaged brand name which is sitting in the cases easy to grab. No, these cheeses are not accessible to customers without asking a staff member, interestingly enough. One must go all the way to the back of the store to the meat counter and ask the butcher for the house made queso fresco or queso crema. It's a plus if you speak Spanish, or befriend a fellow customer who may be able to help you. The queso crema tastes homemade. It has that fresh cheese smell. It's great with chips, on enchiladas, tacos, nachos, on a spoon (not kidding), it's great on everything. The queso fresco has a wet salty bite, but not too salty and its the perfect accompaniment to whatever Mexican inspired meal your cooking up in the kitchen. From now on, I'll be measuring all future queso to the standard set here. The bar is high. Come to this store for the queso. They also have a nice small store selection of other common items. The butcher shop is great too. Commonly we'll hit up the meat and cheese here and grab a few veggies, as needed for dinner that night. It's an easy place to run in and grab a few things. It's more of a meat shop meets bodega kinda place. Do your regular weekly shopping elsewhere. Shop here for just handful of specialty items. I'd recommend shopping here in the daylight hours. SO many…read morefriendly faces, smiles, pups on leashes, kids with faces painted, vendors discussing their products and selling their wares, etc. The weather was gorgeous (after all the storms) and the crowd was blessed with a stunning sunset. There are many Saturday markets in the metro area, but this Friday Night Market is the fun one! There was an area for kids hosted by the Library with arts & crafts, books & such, a playground nearby and the Face Painting booth was a big hit as well! Kids of all ages also really enjoyed Big Tony's Shaved Ice truck! There were yummy food trucks (Rollin' Smoke BBQ & Fuego Tacos) and the Big Friendly Beer Bus was popular too. Over 40 vendors were offering everything from home-baked breads, dog cookies & desserts, homemade BBQ sauces, salsas, jams & jellies, raw honey, fresh eggs, produce, herbs, plants/flowers, handmade jewelry, lovely paintings, handcrafted decor, artisan soaps & bath bombs, apothecary creams & ointments, baskets, wreaths, quilted items, bat & bird houses, fairy wands, teas, flavored popcorns, knife-sharpening, you name it! I think the all-things-lavender booth was my favorite though! The Market is open from 6-8pm every Friday night and the vendors and food trucks will vary some each week. Parking is plentiful and dogs are welcomed. There are some picnic tables if you need to set a spell to rest or eat. There is a permanent park bathroom nearby and also a few porta-potties. Be sure to checkout the lovely Monarch Waystation butterfly garden in the park too! There is a nice walking trail that meanders throughout the park and a basketball "hoops area" near the big pavilion. A few helpful tips - 1) come early to get a good parking space and also because the "bread ladies" (Homestead Baking, Burress Homestead, King's Family Homestead) sell out quickly! 2) bring a shopping bag (or maybe a wagon) to carry all the great goodies you find! 3) bring some cash as many vendors accept credit cards but some are not set up for that - you also need cash to buy raffle tickets! (this market does not charge the vendors a fee, but they each donate an item from their booth to be raffled off in goodie baskets at the end of the night - I love this concept!) Farmers' markets are such a great way to get outside with your neighbors to support local farmers & artisans, as well as your community - I can't wait to go back next week! #shoplocal

I was so impressed with the variety of vendors; there are traditional produce stands but also local beef, natural bath and body type products, bbq, salsa, popcorn, loose teas and other craft vendors. Also!! Mimosa and Prosecco cart to make your shopping just a tad more chill. Scissortail Park is such a great place to be and there is literally something for everyone who enjoys being outdoors! For one, they always have a wide selection of fresh organic fruit and veggies; and enough protein selections to rival the average butcher shop. Second, there is an employee there by the name of Kendra Lawson. Every time I have needed assistance, she is attentive, courteous, and professional. I'm never made to feel like an inconvenience, regardless of anything else she may have been doing. That kind of customer service is becoming rare, but those few places that exhibit it will always earn my returning patronage.

On this visit I slowed down and walked every aisle. The produce section has an impressive variety of fresh vegetables you don't usually see in typical grocery stores. I also spent some time at the seafood counter, which had a large and very fresh-looking selection. If you enjoy cooking or experimenting with new ingredients, this market is definitely worth exploring. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time to look around.
