My son and I met to catch up on his adventures on the road and enjoy a sandwich together. We hit the market around 11, just as some of the vendors were switching over to lunch. We were able to sample some products while winding our way through a healthy crowd of people who would look at home in an upscale Target or antiquing in a small town on their way to their weekend lake house. By comparison, Dirk and I looked like roadies in some Viking Metal band sittingf in a corner with gyo and beef juice in our beards, but we enjoyed the experience AND the food. If you want the market, you can find curious culinary options from Nordic hot sauces [Pikku Piru] to gourmet mushrooms [Bennett Run]. Dirk chose a falafel from Grill & Gyro which was fat and delicious coming with fresh cut fries in a quantity too big to finish. I enjoyed a "Surrender the Fresh Dip" which was pricey but worth every penny for the tender, seasoned beef on a toasted roll with superb au jus. While I am used to buying my farmer's market pretzels from the Amish, I enjoyed a Foltz original pretzel, though I never understood the pairing of pretzels and lemonade so I declined that suggestion by the nice lady behind the counter. Regardless of what you crave, everyone is personable and passionate about their signature foods. They know it is a competitive market with so much to choose from, but I was happy to see so many people at various spots conducting themselves like regulars, just as happy to chat as have lunch with their favorite vendors. Parking is plentiful and the location is easily accessible just off of Chocolate Avenue It is clean and bright, inviting even in the tightly-packed center corridors that hide some of the more interesting kiosks and treats. My only complaint is the lack of seating. There's so much to choose from but not a lot of space to enjoy it. Dirk and I had to sit at a 4-seater and share with a family of 8 who packed themselves into a corner. Given that the market is only open Thursday to Saturday, plan for patience or go early for breakfast. I was able to sample some wares that were going off sale and they were delicious. I'll definitely be back.

My family and I split up to tackle the various vendors. While my family settled for sushi, Korean fried chicken wings, and bento boxes, I couldn't pass up Carmela's for a cheese steak with sharp provolone cheese and crab fries. We all shared anyway. We were so hungry I forgot to take pictures of all the other food. It was glorious. Other than the wings, all the vendors were very quick to get the orders out. There were several eating areas which was helpful because I think we got there 30 mins before the dinner rush was coming in. The vibe is very nice. I grew up going to reading terminal market in Philly so having little markets like this around is always a delight. I hope the vendors do well because there's so many other vendors I'd like to try.

While scrolling social media one evening, I stumbled across a heated debate about who makes the…read morebest peanut butter pie in Central PA. This conversation was clearly MADE for me. As someone who takes peanut butter desserts perhaps a little more seriously than the average human being, I immediately started making a list of the top contenders. Oak Grove Farms kept popping up, so when I found myself with a free rainy Saturday afternoon, it became time for an official Peanut Butter Pie Procurement Mission. Now, Oak Grove Farms offers way more than peanut butter pie. Their farm market is stocked with fresh produce, baked goods, meats, dairy products, locally made items and all kinds of other goodies. But this particular Yelp review? This mission? Laser-focused on peanut butter pie. Before leaving home, I called to make sure I wouldn't drive over only to discover they'd sold out. The nice lady who answered the phone happily confirmed they still had peanut butter pie available. Mission status: ON! When I arrived, I was actually surprised by how busy the farm market was despite the rainy weather. Apparently a little rain isn't enough to keep folks away from Oak Grove, which is always a good sign. I walked straight inside and made an immediate beeline for the refrigerated pie case. There were only two individual slices of peanut butter pie left, so I grabbed one before anyone else could beat me to it. They also had half and whole pies available, but let's try to exercise at least a little self-control on the first visit. The damage? A whopping $2.49 for a slice of peanut butter pie. I actually laughed. That's almost suspiciously affordable these days. As I was heading toward the register, I made the mistake of walking past the whoopie pies. Or perhaps the best decision of the day. Five minutes later, I was walking out with not only my peanut butter pie but also a Shoofly Whoopie Pie for another $2.50. My picnic dessert situation had officially escalated. Fast forward a few hours...dinner was over. It was dessert time. The peanut butter pie absolutely lived up to the hype! The filling was light and fluffy while still delivering a rich peanut butter flavor in every bite. I'm usually not the biggest fan of chocolate cookie crusts on peanut butter pie because I think they sometimes overpower the filling, but this one worked beautifully. Even the little dollops of whipped topping around the edge added just the right finishing touch. This one has officially earned a spot near the top of my Central PA peanut butter pie rankings! And then...the Shoofly Whoopie Pie. I honestly bought it because I'd never seen one before and curiosity got the better of me. And, I'm really glad it did! It was incredibly moist with a rich molasses flavor that came through beautifully without being overwhelming. It was unlike any whoopie pie I've had before, and easily one of my favorite varieties I've tried in quite a while. Mission accomplished! While Oak Grove Farms is clearly much more than just a destination for desserts, this peanut butter pie expedition was an overwhelming success. Next time I'll spend more time exploring everything else the market has to offer. But let's be honest...I'll probably leave with another slice o

Whether you're grabbing lunch, searching for a sweet treat, or just enjoying a stroll through the neighborhood, there's always something worth checking out. A few highlights from my visits: A great mix of food vendors, specialty treats, and local businesses. A strong sense of community that makes every visit feel lively and welcoming. Plenty of options whether you're looking for a full meal, a quick snack, or something to take home. Most vendors accept tap-to-pay, but it's still a good idea to bring some cash just in case. A couple of personal recommendations: Grab a smoothie on a hot summer day for a refreshing pick-me-up. Try an ice cream flight if you're having trouble deciding on just one flavor. Other amenities: Plenty of parking nearby. Public restrooms available. Indoor seating areas for enjoying your food. A courtyard that's perfect for sitting outside when the weather is nice. What I enjoy most about the Broad Street Market is that every visit can be different. You can stop in for a quick bite, spend time browsing the vendors, or simply enjoy the atmosphere and people-watch while enjoying a meal. It's one of Harrisburg's true community gathering places and a spot I recommend to both locals and visitors alike.

Lucky Penny Burger is the latest food truck to arrive to this market. I ordered the forever free burger. It was definitely juicy. You had to eat this quick before the bottom bum was soaked. It could use just a touch of salt but the combination of guacamole, bacon and pepper jack cheese, you can't go wrong. I ate in my car since there wasn't any tables out near this truck. I would suggest a few tables be added towards the end of the lot if possible. By the time I would've walked towards the table there, my bun would probably fall apart. I will stop by again. Make sure you check out their FB page since they show a few pictures of the vendors that will be there. They're always adding new jems like Lucky Penny Burger and there was also a Moonshine vendor there. If I didn't have to go back to work I would've tried a few samples.
