Shopping at ALDI is honestly one of the best ways to keep grocery costs down. The prices are noticeably lower than most places, but the quality of many products is surprisingly good. The only thing I still can't get used to is the shopping carts that require a coin. I understand the idea behind it, but it does feel a bit outdated sometimes. In my Aldi order I requested fresh unfrozen salmon. I received frozen salmon. the package said never frozen, however mine came in a frozen package. which btw was very difficult to open. My second complaint is regarding produce. I ordered several items of produce. All the fresh produce was not so fresh. A bag of fresh spinach was half rotten, bananas spotted & bruised & avocados that were already way gone. The sweet potatoes I had ordered were very small & wrinkled. Also received celery with ribs that were brown. As a senior citizen I order delivered food & trusting the shopper to provide fresh food to me. I tip well & am often disappointed with what I receive. Great shop here, picking up groceries for the hotel room. I got enough for three breakfasts and two lunches plus coffee and creamer and dessert. Woot, woot. I love ALDI because I've figured out the shopping system. Bring a quarter for the cart, bring a reusable shopping bag, and the layout of the store is pretty much the same. Great quality, very low prices. Sure, they don't have a huge spectrum of stuff and generally only one brand choice for an item. But they had what I wanted today and I'm happy. The prices can't be beat and the quality is awesome. - Gourmet 85% dark chocolate for under $2 a bar (and it's as good as the $7 bars I've bought at Whole Foods). Same ingredients too. They also sell quinoa - which is a staple in my house. - Gluten free products with the same ingredients as the fancy brands at health food stores. Pasta, crackers, etc. Woo hoo! - Lots of fresh produce - and it doesn't go bad after 2 days which has happened when I've bought organic. Like to juice or make smoothies? You won't go broke buying your produce here. - Clean and organized. - Efficient staff - they ring your food up FAST. Bring your own bags like others have mentioned and don't forget that quarter for the shopping cart. They do this to prevent theft, I'm assuming. You get your quarter back - when you return the cart. Plan to bag your own items - they don't do this for you so if you're lazy, don't shop here. WHAT DID I DO BEFORE I DISCOVERED ALDI?? I overpaid for EVERYTHING is what I did. This Aldi is organized well stocked (except for the occasional banana shortage). I do my weekly grocery here in about 12 minutes and under $25. Sometimes less than that! Weekly Staples for a single person: spinach, milk, eggs, tomatoes, frozen stuffed sandwiches (off-brand Hot Pockets), soup, tomato sauces, juice and chicken=$25, no more than $30, depending on how much chicken you get. I converted my roommate into an Aldi shopper who, up to that point, was spending $65 a week at Safeway. Most of the brands are Aldi brands--who cares? Same flavor and quality as the overpriced grocery stores. Note: Sam's Club is still less expensive for ground turkey meat and large quantities of shredded cheese. Check it out! P.S. The Fit and Active Stuffed Sandwiches sooooooooooooo much better than brand Hot Pockets. If you over-microwave a HP, it will turn rock hard. If you leave the Stuffed Sandwich in a few extra seconds, it will still be edible. The bread is softer. yum! read more

For those of you that have never been to Europe, Aldi gives you just a little taste of what you can expect out of a supermarket in Europe. Even down to the coin-operated shopping carts and the cashiers getting a seat to tally up your shopping! (don't all cashiers wish they didn't have to stand) Aldi is a place to get basic staples. If you're wanting to go all out on a meal, well... you may need to go to your specialty supermarket to get the ingredients. I've always been well pleased with the amount of items I leave w/ and the accompanying price. Don't fall in love with a product too much. Aldi tends to rotate new things so, love it while you have it because it may not be there next time you go. Bring your own bags! Aldi goes green and doesn't offer disposable plastic bags. read more

We just had to try it...and we were very pleasantly surprised! My friends gave us hints: take your own bags, have a quarter ready for the cart, etc...they were beyond helpful. We were not able to buy everything we needed on our list for the week, but were able to load up on healthy options such as nuts, dried fruit, awesome produce, and a few frozen items! Despite the good reviews, I was hesitant to try Aldi because where I'm from, Aldi is located in the worst neighborhoods. That and the weird idea that charging $.25 for a cart will somehow keep society's "cart thieves" away. I didn't know what to expect, so only came to browse--and then wished I had splurged on a cart! Great prices, and the biggest shock was the quality of produce was among the best in Frederick. Cauliflower was $2 less than Wegman's (and it was Dole), cucumbers were $.40 less. I don't know how they are for "regular" grocery shopping--e.g. if I bring a list, will I be able to find everything I need--but I will certainly try! They just started accepting credit cards. If you're gluten-free, you need to put Aldi's on your list of grocery stores. They have a surprisingly high number of gluten-free products, the pricing is excellent, and their labelling for both gluten and lactose/dairy is clear. I can get a bag of GF pasta for under $2. That's witchcraft. Add in random German grocery items, excellent prices on meat and pantry staples, and an interesting rotation of specials, and Aldi's is a standard stop on our weekly grocery list. As everyone notes, you need to bring a quarter for the carts, you need to use a debit card or cash at the tills, you have to bring and load your own bags, and the selection can be pretty basic at times. If you want super fancy groceries, Aldi's is not it. But in combination with other grocer's, it makes shopping for us a lot easier. I'm not a fan of the majority of the produce, admittedly. But that's a small issue compared with the benefits of Aldi's. Bottom line: bring a quarter and give it a shot. read more

I don't go to grocery stores that often, but my boyfriend and I were both overwhelmed when we entered into Aldi in Frederick. It was chaotic, barely organized, and the shelves were in all sorts of disarray. I felt like I was back in Kyrgyzstan trying to buy food from a Bazaar. We decided to give Aldi a try because of what we've heard with their steps towards sustainability and sourcing ethical products, but their product selection didn't seem to reflect any of that. We read the labels, we looked. Not offering plastic bags isn't enough of an environmental stance to get my return business. I need more. I get Aldi's business model which is similar to a low price airline in cutting out all of the perks in order to get the best price. I appreciate that model, but for me this store was just not worth the savings. I've been to all sorts of Aldi stores in Germany and they were very different from this one. They felt comfortable, had far more variety, were organized, and efficient. This store seems to fail on all of those items above EXCEPT for the fact that we got through the line quickly. Aldi is cheap, but it's not what I thought it would be. I'd rather go dumpster diving than sort through the chaos that is Aldi Frederick. Good luck everyone. read more

This is my favorite place to shop. ALDI has everything to offer the atmosphere is very calm. You see Amish shopping here. You can not shop anywhere else and get the amount of food for the price you pay. Its very clean. And the whole idea with the .25 for the shopping cart is just an effort to work together to keep what belongs a certain place in that place. If you're familiar with Aldi, then you know what the rave is about: saving loads of money. I was so pleased to learn that Aldi was opening a store in Frederick, which is much closer to home for me than schlepping all the way out to Hyattsville or Takoma Park. This Aldi is new so it's cleaner than the ones in PG County. If you haven't been to an Aldi, be sure to take a quarter with you. To keep down overhead, the don't pay anyone to recover carts from the parking lot. When you arrive, you have to put a quarter in the lock to retrieve a cart. And just like the gym lockers at the spa or water park, you'll get your quarter back when you bring the car back up. Or, frequently, when you're unloading your groceries in your car, someone will come by with a quarter and take the cart off your hands. Aldi shoppers are so nice! This isn't Giant or Harris Teeter or Whole Foods, so be prepared. This is Aldi's version of generic foods at rock bottom prices. What do I mean by "generic?" Most of the food is Aldi's brand. "ALDI partners with the best suppliers in the country--often the same ones that produce national brands." While everything is neat and tidy, you won't find beautiful shelf displays here. The cartons are brought in, stacked and opened. That's it. But really, do you want to pay for pretty shelves and decorations and muzak and people dancing around with brooms? There are some name brand food items here. But if you're unwilling to switch from name brands to generic, Aldi isn't for you. Me? I'm happy spending 50% less on my grocery bill for food which tastes as good if not better than the name brands. I can count on one hand the items I've bought that were not worth buying again. As they say on their website: "We adhere to stringent quality standards. Every product we sell must match or exceed the leading national brand in taste, appearance, and/or performance. Our premium produce is shipped faster and smarter, so it comes to your table fresher and cheaper." I'm not going to give you a list of prices. Just trust me that you won't find anything less expensive. Not at Costco or Sam's, not at Super WalMart. I know this because I've spent an exhausting amount of time researching all the stores and all the sales and came up with a super duper price book to compare prices. Nothing beats Aldi. It's all not rosy. You may not come away with everything on your grocery list because they just aren't big enough to carry everything. For example, if you like potato rolls, you won't find them Aldi. Yes, they have bread, but a very limited variety. Same with produce. They have some of the basics, but you won't find portobella mushrooms or endive here. My scheme is buy the bulk of my groceries at Aldi and then head over to Super WalMart to fill in the blanks. I have drastically cut my grocery budget with this combo. Bring boxes or reusable grocery bags or even leftover plastic bags, because they don't supply them. You can purchase big Aldi bags and reuse them if you forget. The checkers are quick and polite. First time around, you'll heave a great sigh when you see all your groceries placed sort of willy nilly in the cart as they are rung up. Nothing will get damaged and there's an order to how they do it, even if you don't see it at first. We're all used to having our groceries placed orderly into bags, placed in the cart and ready for us to unload in our cars. Some of you (you know who you are), let the good folks at the store put them in the car for you. Well, if you want these rock bottom prices, you're going to have to "man up" and bag and unload your own groceries. There's a long counter in the front of the store where you can safely bag up your groceries. I actually enjoy this part of my shopping trip. I can bag up the groceries based on the way I put them away at home. If you've never been to Aldi, I suggest you go with a certain amount of money to spend and see how far it stretches. Don't go the first time hoping to do all your shopping. Get a feel for the place. Pay attention to what they have and how their items compare with what you usually buy. I'm from Virginia and my first experience was in this store. I walked into the store browsing the isles not realizing that a quarter was required to use one of their grocery carts. Not knowing I took one that was left in an isle. I got such a scowl and jaw dropping expression from one of the clerks when I did this. I felt like I had committed a crime, it's not until a friend I was with explained that you must go back outside to get a cart with a quarter and get it back on exit.. I had to choose between dropping a hand full of groceries in an isle or get a reprimand from my friend for committing this Aldi crime. I do not carry change or quarters. After looking at the stock laid out on the floor in boxes, I realized that the products were of the dollar type variety. Sure it's cheap but most of it is not what I generally use. I could get cheaper eggs, milk or butter but that would mean going to two different grocery stores. I really don't care about a quarter for a cart although it's quirky (I did live in Germany for five years growing up- so I'm familiar with chains like this one).. Love aldi, but cannot stand this particular store. It's impossible to park anywhere close, the meat and produce section is always completely destroyed, empty or contains rotten fruits / vegetables. I have never been able to check out in any sort of timely fashion because they are so severely understaffed and the place actually stinks, there's a rotten food / meat odor when you walk in. I really enjoy shopping from Aldi. The prices are cheap. I can get most of the items that I need. They have everything from fruits, vegetables, meat, bread, dessert, cleaning supplies, and toys. This place is awesome. I gave it 4 stars because often times the aisles are too close together, so when they are stocking things it can be tricky to get around. Anyway, this place is awesome. I got MORE FOOD than I do at Wegmans for about $15 less. A large bag of tortilla chips for $1.79? And it's good quality stuff. We know Aldi's from when we lived in Germany, and were glad to find it here too. They stock quality products, many of them sourced from the E.U. like their European stores, at much lower prices than you will see in the "International Foods" sections of the major chain supermarkets. What a lot of people don't know is that the Aldi chain is owned by the same German family that owns Trader Joe's, and you can find many similar products in both stores but with different store brand names. Prices are similar on these products, but since there is no TJ's in Frederick, you can save yourself the 26-mile drive into Gaithersburg for many products you may like at TJ's. Aldi's doesn't carry many organics and their dairy products are not rBst-free so you still have to go to TJ's for that. For basic pantry items, especially baking staples (flour, sugar), noodles, jams, canned vegetables, soups, snack foods, paper products, dairy, produce and meats -- the large chains have a hard time beating Aldi's prices. There is not a huge selection, and almost all products are store-branded, but they're good products. They only accept cash, debit and EBT cards, and you have to bag your groceries in your own grocery bags, and put a deposit (a quarter) for a shopping cart, but these are the things that help them keep their prices so low. read more

I love this place! No, I don't buy everything here and my teen daughter doesn't want to come here with me....but I come here for the great priced produce and dairy products. This is like shopping in Europe. You will need a quarter to unlock a cart and take it in the store, but you will get the quarter back when you return the cart. Bring your own grocery bags (or you can buy them). Their milk, cream, and butter are a great price, and unlike some stores, the milk doesn't taste like the plastic container. They have great prices on their produce and the prices vary from week to week. What I particularly like: excellent mixed greens, mushrooms (last week they were 89 cents), grapefruit (sometimes they are 39 cents), celery, peppers, tomatoes, strawberries, etc. Sometimes they have Fage yogurt. They have good goat cheese and some other cheeses I haven't tried yet. I'm sure they have other good things that I haven't discovered yet. read more

I can't praise this place enough. The employees for the most part are very pleasant and know me and make shopping there personable. This store is well lit and clean and a pleasure to shop in. Most of what we've tried at Aldi, we love. These include the veggie chips, frozen shrimp lo mein skillet meal (tasted so fresh and awesome, fed us for $2 /person plus a midnight snack!!), dark chocolate with hazlenuts, turkey bacon, egg replacement, wild berry pastry crackers, greek yogurt (and I'm very picky when it comes to greek yogurt), packaged guacamole, chicken stock, and produce (blueberries were ripe, onions were very STRONG and fresh, and oranges). If you're leary of trying things that are off-brand, you may be deterred from Aldi. Don't be. Just try stuff ,and if you don't like it (which has happened) it's very easy to return it and find something else. You can get some incredible bargains there. read more

The review done in 2009 says everything. I'm actually a little suspicious that it may be a promo by an Aldi employee, BUT, the reality is it is completely true and accurate. I'm British and live in Reno, NV where we don't have an Aldi anywhere near. This makes me sad as, when we lived in Spalding UK we shopped extensively in our local Aldi, as we did when we visited Europe on camping trips. We had friends in the food industry and they all verified Aldi sells high quality at low prices (and, as suppliers, they loved to deal with Aldi as they were fair unlike many other chains). We now visit our daughter here in Maryland and always take trips to Aldi, taking lots of chocolate back to Reno. Aldi = No 1; WalMart, HT, Smith's, etc are behind by a long way. Aldi is great and here is a little secret. I was in the food packaging business for awhile and I can verify that off brands and store brands are made by the name brands. When a packaging company is trying to get their business, the food quality requirements are stringent...they demand quality. The packaging may be different, but the line that runs Fresh Express (and others) doesn't change the salad ingredients when they change the package. It's the same stuff. Another thing is that after awhile, you will be able to tell who makes the product by what shows up on the shelf next to the generic...ex. Tandil detergent is made by Tide, which I suspected from the get go because it does a great job, but after a few years, Tide started showing up along side the Tandil. You can watch for that all over the store. Their cheeses are great, the meat selection is sparse, but good, milk and eggs you won't find cheaper and almost everything I've tried has been great. You can also buy stuff for the house there, which have all been excellent quality also. I love the place and save quite a bit of money. Win, win. read more

I moved toParker, Co to Waynesboro, Pa 3 months ago. Shortly after arrival I had to do my grocery shopping and got sticker shock on the prices of basic grocery items such as milk, butter, produce etc. Waynesboro, Pa is 19 miles from Hagerstown, Md, so now we drive once a week to Aldi to do our weekly shopping. I find most items there and definitely save, for example 1 g. 2% milk is $2.99 and in Waynesboro over $4.00. They have some name brands, but mostly their own store brand, which are of good quality. Aldi doesn't accept coupons, because their prices are already very low. Also keep in mind that if you see something you like, buy some extra since Aldi works with low overhead, items get shipped to the store in low quantities. Bring a quarter for your shopping cart and bags and boxes for your goods. I am German and grew up with having an Aldi store nearby, I wish they would have more German items.
