Where you rent a shopping cart
    Mark A.

I hate this store. I really do. Every time I go here, I leave disappointed. No matter how little I expect of them, they still manage to let me down. I could write about the time I went here to get one thing - bananas - and I left without them. But that was years ago, so I went again and am writing my review based on my most recent visit. I'll admit, it's not as bad as it used to be, but it still has a long way to go. I went here attempting to do my weekly grocery shopping. Before entering the store, I noticed their shopping carts are outside and that you have to "pay" 25 cents to "rent" one; you get your money back when you return the cart. I avoid using cash whenever possible, and never have change on me, so I was not able to get a shopping cart. When I entered the store, they had a bunch of random things on the shelves, largely unpacked from the boxes the store receives them in. The store is fairly small, so that could explain why they didnt have a lot, but what I dont get is they waste some of their limited shelf space on stuff nobody expects to buy at a grocery store like electric leaf blowers. The whole store just has a feel like they dont "carry" anything, and instead they just sell whatever they can get a good deal on. So I went through the store, trying to do my shopping. I had 13 things on my list. Of these, they did not have 8, and this included common items like peanut butter and frozen green beans. There were other things they had I needed, but you had to buy in mass quantities. So all in all, I was able to get exactly one thing on my list. When I went to go pay, they only had one register open (weekend mid afternoon). To my surprise, I was able to pay with credit card, but they still dont have bags for you. Worse than that, Im not sure they even have bags available - I saw customers who had already checked out messing around with their stuff in their grocery cart past the registers; maybe they were trying to put their stuff in bags they had brought. Regardless, Shop and Save is still better. With that said, I am able to say 2 good things about this place: the stuff they sell is cheap, and one time I went they had a lot more German food than any other place I know of; of course, the next time I went, they didn't have any German food at all, but I guess that's what you get here. Other than that, this place is awful and a waste of your time to go here, because you will have to go somewhere else to get the rest of the stuff you need that these guys dont have. Save yourself the time and go somewhere else.

I was in St.Louis to attend a family celebration for my wife's aunt who recently passed. One thing we always enjoy is ooey gooey butter cake. Usually, my mother in law would buy it at the grocery store, but the store outsourced it recently, and it isn't as good. My brother in law stopped in here and got one for us. It was exactly what we like. We borrowed his car the day we were flying out and visited the store to get some to take home. They have these cute little 3oz cakes in tiny foil pans wrapped up nicely with a tiny plastic spoon. We ended up buying a bunch of those to share with folk back home. One time at the airport, the TSA agent told us that gooey butter cake and provel cheese are the most frequent items they see folks taking from St. Louis. We had a slight wait while the wonderful lady behind the counter was making a few more cakes. We ended up taking two frozen ones instead of waiting, but were there long enough to have a great visit with her. She is a friend of the owner. Sadly I didn't get her name. She made us feel at home in the store. As we were leaving, several other customers started coming in. The whole little shopping strip was busy. I had a really hard time backing out of my space in my brother in law's monsterously huge car.

Such an awesome local collaboration! Plenty of parking in the lot, and carts are available outside before going inside. The front area has large volume rice and then you enter the all the fun! Plenty of fruits and veggies, I always pick up Fresno peppers, loose okra, and Thai Basil. From there you have the aisles based on country, I always want to skip aisles, but I just cannot, there is always so much to look at, something you haven't seen from the last time. The frozen section holds all kinds of things to try; I like the frozen Indian entrees! If you need any kind of ingredient for any dish, you should be able to find it here. when it is time to check out, there are always plenty of lanes open and the staff is always pleasant and friendly.

The first thing I noticed was the size. Even before entering, I knew it would not have the selection JJ has. When you're looking for something you need from across the pond, it's adequate. They had bangers, Irish bacon and a few Knorr packaged sauces that we can't get anywhere but JJ. They had 85% dark chocolate bars, but they didn't have our favorite English hard candies (Cadbury and Walker's and Morrison's eclairs). IMO they had too much American food that could be bought at any familiar grocery store - but they're good in a pinch! P.S. they had fairly large selections of Indian and Asian foods, but I don't know a lot about those.
